Baiting and flower watching mainly in forest habitats throughout Thailand (1997–2002) yielded 46 species of Sarcophaga Meigen. About 50% of the species are new to Thailand and several new to science. All 67 species of Sarcophaga so far reported from Thailand are listed and their taxonomic status and nomenclature updated. Emphasis on rearing (523 broods) ensured species identification through the male progeny of the otherwise mostly unidentifiable females, and allowed several new correct male–female associations, besides offering new insights into the flies' breeding strategies. Three natural larviposition habits were observed in the wild: (1) on faeces of carnivorous and omnivorous, but not herbivorous, mammals (coprobiodotic), e.g. S. africa (Wiedemann), S. albiceps Meigen, S. misera Walker; (2) on cadaver (necrobiodotic), e.g. S. krathonmai Pape and Bänziger, S. nathani (Lopes), S. saprianovae Pape and Bänziger; and (3) on both of them (amphibiodotic), e.g. S. dux Thompson, S. ruficornis (Fabricius). However, larvae of copro- and necrobiodotic species experimentally transferred to cadaver and faeces, respectively, also developed to normal adults. The unexpected laying choosiness between excrement or carrion in the wild is discussed, together with the role played by laying habits in deceptive pollination systems and myiases.  相似文献

Sixty-two species of primarily ground-nesting Sphercidae were studied in order to assess their counter-cleptoparasitic behaviour against nine species of associated cleptoparastic miltogrammine flies. Fly larviposition was altered or thwarted by species-specific nesting patterns and distinctive behavioural components of the wasps. Pre-larvipositional, counter-cleptoparasitic behaviours included freeze-stops, face-offs, diversionary and chasing flights, butting, stinging and male nestguarding. Post-larvipositional counter-cleptoparasitic behaviours involved the actual removal of maggots from the prey by the wasp, cell and burrow cleaning, prey and cell abandonment and maggot destruction by the larvae of progressive provisioning species.  相似文献

The complex of species resembling Megaselia pulicaria (Fallén) has proved to be one of the most troublesome challenges to attempts to resolve the recognition of species within the huge genus Megaselia Rondani. The new data presented allow more confident recognition of species and reveal that most published records represent misidentifications. The penis complex is discussed and its use in species identification demonstrated. All specimens currently assigned to M. pulicaria, other than the lectotype, are consequently reassigned to other species. These include the reinstatement of M. angusta (Wood) and its newly designated subspecies M. angusta angustina Schmitz, M. eupygis Schmitz, M. longifurca (Lundbeck) and M. monochaeta (Strobl) as valid species, and the recognition of M. buchsi sp. nov. from Germany, M. iberiensis sp. nov. from Spain, M. martensi sp. nov. from Nepal, M. nectergata sp. nov. from Britain, M. oviaraneae sp. nov. from Britain, and M. rotundapicis sp. nov. from Scotland. Five synonyms are proposed. The hitherto unknown male of M. petraea Schmitz is described. It and M. longifurca are reported from Britain and the latter from the Nearctic Region also. Natural history information is summarized for each species. In particular, it is reported that the species whose larvae prey upon spider eggs are M. angusta, M. longifurca and M. oviaraneae.  相似文献

Sarcofahrtiopsis thyropteronthos sp. n. is described from Costa Rica. All specimens were bred from faeces taken from young, tubular leaves of musoid plants (genera Heliconia and Calathea) used as roosts by Spix's disk-winged bat Thyroptera tricolor Spix. Larvae were observed in practically all roosts suggesting a highly specialized association.  相似文献

We studied differentially stained karyotypes of the leporids Lepus californicus, L. callotis, and L. flavigularis and described their banding patterns of euchromatin to decide whether results fit expectations of chromosomal rearrangements leading to the karyotypic evolution ancestral of the L. californicus--L. callotis--L. flavigularis lineage. Results confirmed previous findings on numbers of chromosomes (2 n 's) and fundamental numbers (FNs; except for L. californicus ). Homologous G-banding patterns allowed identification of chromosome rearrangements such as pericentric inversions and addition and deletion of euchromatin. Chromosomal rearrangements that we deduced mostly support hypotheses on karyotypic changes in the chromosomal evolution of the Lepus ancestral lineage that we examined. The karyotypic pattern coincides with patterns of geographic variation and distribution of the species examined.  相似文献

Iridophora clarki gen. nov., sp. nov., Megaselia sembeli sp. nov. and M. kodongi sp. nov. are described. The females of I. clarki attack the workers of the ant Iridomyrmex cordatus (Smith). The same ant species is also attacked by M. sembeli, and the morphology of this species indicates that it is close to P. beirne Brues, the typespecies of the genus Plastophora. The loss of the type-material of the latter species prevented synonomy of the genus when it was re-evaluated (Disney, 1978). The detailed examination of M. sembeli now indicates that the genus Plastophora is a synonym of Megaselia (syn. nov.). A consequence is that P. dubitata Brues, 1935 becomes a homonym of M. dubitata (Malloch, 1912) and the replacement name M. bruesi nom. nov. is proposed. The females of M. kodongi attack workers of a species of Pheidologeton which forages on the forest floor. The habit of Iridomyrmex cordatus in using covered ways up trees appears to be related to its extreme vulnerability to attack by these two phorides.  相似文献

A review of heterophyid trematodes found in Mexico, both as metacercariae encysted in fish and adults in fish-eating birds and mammals, is presented, including numerous new geographical and host records. Data on the morphology, spectrum of intermediate and definitive hosts, site of infection of metacercariae, distribution in Mexico and biology of the following species are provided (species first reported from Mexico marked with an asterisk): *Ascocotyle (Ascocotyle) gemina Font, Overstreet and Heard, 1984; A. (A.) leighi Burton, 1956; A. (A.) tenuicollis Price, 1935; A. (Leighia) chandleri Lumsden, 1963; *A. (L.) mcintoshi Price, 1936; A. (L.) megalocephala Price, 1932; A. (L.) nunezae Scholz, Vargas-Vazquez, Vidal-Martínez and Aguirre-Macedo, 1997; Ascocotyle (Leighia) sp.; *A. (Phagicola) ampullacea Miller and Harkema, 1962; A. (P.) diminuta Stunkard and Haviland, 1924; A. (P.) macrostoma (Robinson, 1956); *A. (P.) longa Ransom, 1920; A. (P.) nana Ransom, 1920; Centrocestus formosanus (Nishigori, 1924); *Euhaplorchis californiensis Martin, 1950; Galactosomum puffini Yamaguti, 1941; *Haplorchis pumilio (Looss, 1896); Heterophyidae gen. sp. (= Haplorchoides sp. of Scholz and Vargas-Vázquez, 1998); *Phocitremoides ovale Martin, 1950; and *Pygidiopsis pindoramensis (Travassos, 1929). Two of the above-listed species, C. formosanus and H. pumilio, have been introduced recently to Mexico, most probably from Asia with the imported thiarid snail Melanoides tuberculata (Müller). Metacercariae of heterophyid trematodes are among the most frequent and abundant parasites offish in Mexico, in particular in its southeastern part.  相似文献

A new species of the freshwater cyclopid genus Paracyclops Claus, 1893 collected from the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico is described based on female and male specimens. It has affinities with other forms with profusely ornamented caudal rami, such as Paracyclops carectum Reid and Paracyclops pilosus Dussart, but it can be distinguished by a combination of characters including details of the ornamentation of the coxa of leg 1, third antennular segment with incomplete suture line, inner margin of the caudal rami with scattered hair-like elements, and relatively long caudal rami, among other characters. The male is distinguished mainly by having the caudal rami completely covered by pilosity, which differs from all other known Paracyclops, including Paracyclops carectum. The new species has affinities with neotropical Paracyclops. Illustrated records and a morphological analysis of two more species of Paracyclops from Mexico, Paracyclops poppei and Paracyclops chiltoni, are also included in this contribution.  相似文献

A total of 53 Amiota (s. str.) species (75% of the world total) from Asia and Europe, including 10 new species, kamui, kimurai and planata from Japan, and aristata, cuii, macai, magniflava, nuerhachii, spinata and watabei from China, are reviewed with designation of two new synonymies and phylogenetic analysis. Based upon the result of cladistic analysis with 31 adult male morphological characters, the following conclusions are deduced: (1) The subgenus Amiota is monophyletic, so far as the Asian and European forms are concerned. (2) Seven monophyletic groups are recognized within this subgenus. Two of them correspond to known species-groups, the apodemata and sinuata groups, and the remaining five are established as new species-groups, the nagatai, basdeni, taurusata, alboguttata and rufescens groups. A key to all the studied species from Asia and Europe is provided.  相似文献

In this paper three species of terrestrial isopods from Sicily are discussed. Spelaeoniscus coiffaiti and Cylisticus convexus are new to the Sicilian fauna. Sicilian specimens of Spelaeoniscus coiffaiti are examined and illustrated, and the biogeographical significance of this species in Sicily is discussed. Trichoniscus panormidensis is described as a new species, and the affinities are treated.  相似文献

Two thousand eight hundred and sixty Sphaeroceridae representing 45 species were caught in eight traps, baited with horse, cow or hamster dung or carrion, placed in woodland and in the open at Silwood Park, Berkshire, during 1983/4. A list of the species and the numbers of each caught in each of the traps is given. Comparisons between the catches of open and woodland habitats and between the catches of the different baits used are made. The habitat and bait preferences and the phenologies of the dominant species are discussed.  相似文献

Three new species of the genus Pacificabathynella Schminke and Noodt, 1988 Schminke, H K and Noodt, W. 1988. Groundwater Crustacea of the order Bathynellacea (Malacostraca) from North America. J Crustacean Biol., 8(2): 290299.  [Google Scholar] are described from groundwater aquifers in glaciated North America (Montana, USA). This is the first time that this genus, known previously only from the state of California, has been documented in Montana. Pacificabathynella and Paradoxibathynella Serban, 2000 Serban, E. 2000. Uenobathynella n.g., Parauenobathynella n.g., Morimotobathynella n.g., Nihobathynella n.g. et Paradoxibathynella n.g., Bathynellinae du Japón (Bathynellidae, Bathynellacea, Podophallocarida). Travaux Inst Spéol “Émile Racovitza”, 36: 361.  [Google Scholar] are the only genera that show sexual dimorphism in thoracopod VI. Pacificabathynella kalispellensis sp. nov. has several unique features: the setal formula of the antenna (0/2+exop/3/12/6/8/5); the setal formula of the maxilla (7/4/7/6); the presence of an epipod on thoracopod II; tufts of setulae and abundant setae on the basipod and endopod of thoracopods I to V; the epipod of thoracopod VIII female three times longer than the basipod; three smooth setae on the exopod of the female thoracopod VIII; eight spines on the endopod of the uropod and the endopod longer than the sympod, whereas the opposite is typical. Pacificabathynella stanfordi sp. nov. has several unique features: only five setae on the exopod of thoracopods II to VII, while six setae are common in the genus; only six setae on the second segment of the first pleopod; five spines on the endopod and seven setae on the exopod of the uropod. Pacificabathynella ruthae sp. nov. is the largest species and has several unique features: antennule equal in size to the antenna, whereas in the rest of the species of the genus the antenna is larger; the projection of the inner lobe of the male thoracopod VIII is bidentate and there are six spines on the endopod and nine setae on the exopod of the uropod. The three new species have slight differences in the pars molaris of the mandible and in thoracopod VIII of males, and there are other minor differences between the females and the species Pacificabathynella sequoiae. The new taxa, together with the new genus Montanabathynella described separately, represent a 30% increase in North American taxa. Considering the glaciated landscape and the fragmented nature of alluvial aquifer habitat, we believe that there is a profound lack of critical knowledge of the biogeography and biodiversity of syncarids in North America.  相似文献

Weiner Entomlogische Zeitung, 28: 283301.  [Google Scholar], and Myolepta obscura Becher, 1882 Becher, E. 1882. Ueber die ersten Stande einiger Syrphiden und eine neue Myiolepta Art.. Wiener Entomologische Zeitung, 1: 249254. [Crossref] [Google Scholar]. Early stages were collected at Cabañeros National Park in Ciudad Real province, central Spain. Mallota dusmeti, M. difformis, and M. obscura were found in water‐filled holes of live Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. trees and the larva of F. fumipennis was found in a sap run on a live Quercus pyrenaica Wild. tree. Larvae were identified by rearing them to the adult stage. Puparia of these species possessed generic‐level characters found in congenerics. Apparent species‐level characters separating them from early stages of congenerics are proposed. The records reported here are the first for the Iberian Peninsula of M. obscura. Mallota dusmeti, M. difformis, and Myolepta obscura are extremely rare in Europe with M. dusmeti classed as “vulnerable” in the Spanish Invertebrate Red Data Book.  相似文献
