Modification by levo-propranolol of tremors induced by harmine in mice

It has been recently reported that the levo isomer of propranolol possesses anti-serotonin properties in animals. Since harmine-induced behavioural changes in mice are reported to be mediated through central serotonergic receptors, an attempt was made to test whether 1-propranolol would also modify harmine-induced responses by virtue of its anti-serotonergic or anti-adrenergic property. The results indicated that l- and dl-propranolol inhibited central serotonin receptor mediated responses to harmine in mice, a finding that is analogous to other recent observations.

Degradation by phytohemagglutinin of the antiviral state induced by interferon]

Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA M and P forms), when added to L 929 cells previously treated by murine interferon, degrades the antiviral state and restores virus sensitivity in the cells. This degradation depends on the amount of the lectin, the contact period with the cell and the presence of PHA membrane receptors. The importance of membrane configuration not only in the induction but also in the maintenance of the antiviral state is discussed.     

Regulation of mycorrhizal infection by hormonal factors produced by hosts and fungi

Summary An overview of current research on hormonal factors produced by plants and fungi in mycorrhizal associations is presented. On the one hand, growth hormones in roots and their exudates influence the metabolism and growth of fungi. On the other, fungal hormones influence root morphology, metabolic changes and the growth of the entire plant.     

Oxidation of vanillin by cream xanthine oxidase and its inhibition by allopurinol

Enhanced depressor reflex by stimulation of superior cervical ganglion and by propranolol

Summary The systemic depressor reflex in cats evoked by inflation of an intrasinusal balloon is enhanced by stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion and by close infusion of 20g/ml/min of (d, 1) propranolol.This work was supported by grant No. 22600-1 NIH, Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Bethesda, MD.     

Activation of complement by trypanosomes

Summary Factors exhibiting anti-complementary activity released from trypanosomes after incubation at 20°C were described. The active material was shown to consume the first component of bovine complement. While the anticomplementary factor(s) from T. lewisi could activate bovine, human and guinea pig complement, the factor(s) from T. congolense was observed to activate bovine complement, but not guinea pig and only slightly human complement. The roles of complement activating factor(s) of trypanosomes in the pathology of the disease are discussed.This project is supported by National Research Council of Canada grant A 0068 and a grant from the International Development Research Centre.     

Blockade of ovulation by melatonin

Inactivation of aldolase by X-rays

Riassunto È stata studiata in vitro l'inattivazione da raggi x dell'aldolasi dal muscolo di coniglio. Il rendimento di inattivazione corrisponde a 0,10 (molecule/100 ev) per concentrazioni comprese tra 10^–5 and 10^–6 M in tampone di fosfati 0,05M, pH 7. Il rendimento non subisce modificazioni di rilievo variando il pH da 6 a 8 o sostituendo al tampone l'acqua bidistillata. Il rendimento é ridotto da 4 a 6 volte in presenza di cisteamina, di cisteina o dei corrispondenti disolfuri in concentrazioni corrispondenti a 50 molecule per molecola di enzima. Coll'ioduro di sodio in concentrazione di 600:1 si ottiene una riduzione di 6 volte.     

Hydrolysis of riboflavin by plants

Résumé Il a été prouvé que l'hydrolyse de la riboflavine à l'aide d'une enzyme se produit dans les extraits de plantes appartenant aux familles desLiliacées, Amaryllidacées etCannas (ou Balisier).On a trouvé le lumichrome et le ribitole parmi les produits de l'hydrolyse. La réaction est stchiométrique, les conditions favorisant une activité optimale sont les suivantes: pH 7.4, température 37°, quantités catalytiques de glutathione reduit.
