The effect of sound,light and vibratory stimuli on serum lipid levels and liver fatty acid content of old and adult rats

Zusammenfassung Der Einfluss von Schall-, Licht- und Schwingungsreizen auf den Serumlipoid- und Leberfettsäurespiegel von 4–6 bzw. 24–26 Monate alten Ratten ergab, dass der Serumlipoidspiegel, die langkettigen freien Fettsäuren und das Acyl-Coenzym A der Leberzellen sowohl in erwachsenen als auch in älteren Tieren zugenommen hatte.     

Shortened duration of drug-induced behavioral excitation in rats with septal lesions

Resumen En las ratas, la reacción elevada de la respuesta evasiva, después de darles iproniazida y tetrabenazina aparentemente está relacionada con el suelto acrecentado de acetylcholina en al parte frontal del cerebro. Cuando las ratas con lesiones septales recibieron estas dos drogas, sus periódos resultantes de excitacion de conducta eran significantamente mas cortos que los de los controles. Como las lesiones septales producen disminución en los niveles de la acetylcholina en el cerebro, estos datos implicaron más el sistema cholinergica en la excitación producida por la iproniziada-tetrabenazina.     

Acceleration of crypt cell proliferation by acoustic stimuli

Summary Cell proliferation rates in the bases of the crypts of Lieberkuhn in the jejunum of rat were measured using a stathmokinetic technique. In rats subjected to recurring loud noise cell proliferation was more rapid than in rats not subjected to the noise.     

Intensification of amphetamine-induced excitation by methysergide,a serotonergic receptor blocker

Summary Methysergide, a serotonergic receptor blocker, was studied to determine its effects against d-amphetamine-induced excitation as measured by convulsions elicited by handling in mice. Significant intensification (p<0.01) of the action of d-amphetamine was observed in mice. These results indicate that reduction in serotonergic activity in the central nervous system enhances excitation induced by d-amphetamine.This work was supported by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Association Starter Grant, No. 5 S01 RR 05654-06 and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Grant. Antidiuretic hormone involvement in the release of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone by hyperosmotic stimuli

In the normal Wistar rat, the plasma alpha-MSH level was raised by hypertonic saline injection (as compared with control rats injected with isotonic saline). No such rise in alpha-MSH followed hypertonic saline administration in the Brattleboro (hereditary diabetes insipidus) animal (compared to isotonic saline injected controls). It is suggested that, in the rat, endogenous antidiuretic hormone is involved in the secretory response of the pars intermedia to osmotic stimuli.     

The calorigenic action of norepinephrine in rats after hypophysectomy

Zusammenfassung 2–4 h nach Hypophysektomie erhöht Noradrenalin den Sauerstoffverbrauch wie bei Kontrollratten, 7 Tage nach der Entfernung der Hypophyse ist jedoch diese Wirkung des Noradrenalin aufgehoben. Die CO₂-Abgabe verhält sich qualitativ wie der Sauerstoffverbrauch.     

Demonstration of vascular redistribution after carotid clamping in rats

Summary in Long Evans rats, the vertebral arteries supply only the brain stem. Simultaneous application of clamps to both carotid arteries results in a considerable fall of cerebral blood flow and eventually death. If an interval of about 4 days is allowed between the clamping of the 2 carotids, redistribution of blood flow takes place. Owing to this mechanism, 50% of the rats survive with a satisfactory restoration of cerebral blood flow.
