Relationships between Australian real estate and stock market prices—a case of market inefficiency

This paper explores the relationship between the Australian real estate and equity market between 1980 and 1999. The results from this study show three specific outcomes that extend the current literature on real estate finance. First, it is shown that structural shifts in stock and property markets can lead to the emergence of an unstable linear relationship between these markets. That is, full‐sample results support bi‐directional Granger causality between equity and real estate returns, whereas when sub‐samples are chosen that account for structural shifts the results generally show that changes within stock market prices influence real estate market returns, but not vice versa. Second, the results also indicate that non‐linear causality tests show a strong unidirectional relationship running from the stock market to the real estate market. Finally, from this empirical evidence a trading strategy is developed which offers superior performance when compared to adopting a passive strategy for investing in Australian securitized property. These results appear to have important implications for managing property assets in the funds management industry and also for the pricing efficiency within the Australian property market. Cortinarius speciosissimus toxins — a preliminary report

Summary Methanolic extracts ofCortinarius speciosissimus yielded a fluorescent compound which was crystallized and shown to be a cyclic polypeptide. The compound, or an analogue, has been found in most members of the genusCortinarius.The authors acknowledge the help of Dr M. Histochemical changes in upper motor lesions,parkinsonism and diuse. Differential effect on white and red muscle fibres

Zusammenfassung Muskelbiopsiematerial aus Patienten mit motorischen Störungen bei Verletzung der Pyramidenbahn, Parkinsonismus und Kreuzbandverletzung wurde mit histochemischer Technik analysiert. Eine Atrophie der weissen Fasern wurde bei Pyramidenbahnverletzung und Parkinsonismus beobachtet. Kreuzbandverletzung ergab hauptsächlich Atrophie der roten Fasern, während diese bei dauernder Spastizität und Rigidität Hypertrophietendenzen zeigen.     

An immunohistochemical study on the distribution of histiocytes containing S-100 protein-like antigen in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma/leukemia; a preliminary report

The immunohistochemical distribution of histiocytes containing S-100 protein-like antigen in the skin lesions of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma/leukemia is investigated. Forecasting nonlinear time series with feed‐forward neural networks: a case study of Canadian lynx data

The forecasting capabilities of feed‐forward neural network (FFNN) models are compared to those of other competing time series models by carrying out forecasting experiments. As demonstrated by the detailed forecasting results for the Canadian lynx data set, FFNN models perform very well, especially when the series contains nonlinear and non‐Gaussian characteristics. To compare the forecasting accuracy of a FFNN model with an alternative model, Pitman's test is employed to ascertain if one model forecasts significantly better than another when generating one‐step‐ahead forecasts. Moreover, the residual‐fit spread plot is utilized in a novel fashion in this paper to compare visually out‐of‐sample forecasts of two alternative forecasting models. Finally, forecasting findings on the lynx data are used to explain under what conditions one would expect FFNN models to furnish reliable and accurate forecasts. Iron malabsorption and hypochromic anemia in a case of Turner's syndrome

Summary Refractory hypochromic anemia was investigated in an adult with Turner's syndrome. Reduced iron absorption, serum iron, and iron incorporation were found in association with increased iron binding capacity and plasma iron turnover. 14 of 57 additional XO subjects were found anemic.     

Chemotaxis is not a special case of haptotaxis

Serum peptides containing classical anaphylatoxin (CAT) produce marked chemotatic orientation of human neutrophil granulocytes without modifying cell attachment to the substratum. Furthermore gradients of adhesion produced with gammaglobulins fail to induce morphological orientation of neutrophils. The results suggest that chemotaxis is not a special case of haptotaxis.     

Forecasting business failure in China using case‐based reasoning with hybrid case respresentation

Case‐based reasoning (CBR) is a very effective and easily understandable method for solving real‐world problems. Business failure prediction (BFP) is a forecasting tool that helps people make more precise decisions. CBR‐based BFP is a hot topic in today's global financial crisis. Case representation is critical when forecasting business failure with CBR. This research describes a pioneer investigation on hybrid case representation by employing principal component analysis (PCA), a feature extraction method, along with stepwise multivariate discriminant analysis (MDA), a feature selection approach. In this process, sample cases are represented with all available financial ratios, i.e., features. Next, the stepwise MDA is used to select optimal features to produce a reduced‐case representation. Finally, PCA is employed to extract the final information representing the sample cases. All data signified by hybrid case representation are recorded in a case library, and the k‐nearest‐neighbor algorithm is used to make the forecasting. Thus we constructed a hybrid CBR (HCBR) by integrating hybrid case representation into the forecasting tool. We empirically tested the performance of HCBR with data collected for short‐term BFP of Chinese listed companies. Empirical results indicated that HCBR can produce more promising prediction performance than MDA, logistic regression, classical CBR, and support vector machine. Quantum state holism: a case for holistic causation

I propose to interpret quantum state holism as a view concerning possibilities: the degree of possibility of a compound's outcome is not determined by the degrees of possibility of the components' outcomes. To analyze this proposal I sketch the modal framework of branching space-times with probabilities understood as weights of possibility. These probabilities serve to define holistic events. A holistic event produces its outcomes subluminally; yet the degree of possibility of its outcome is not determined by the degrees of possibility imposed by the event's components.     

Tubuloreticular structures in hepatic endothelial cells in a case of malignant melanoma liver metastasis.

The presence of tubuloreticular structures within hepatic endothelial cells in a case of malignant melanoma liver metastasis is described. This finding may reflect a host cell response to the neoplastic proliferation in the liver tissue, possible a host-tumor immunological reaction.
