Demonstration of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in in cultivated soils]

The bacteriological analysis of 37 pools of cultivated soils collected in a limited area in the Parisian district permits the isolation of 14 strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis: 9 strains are of serotype II, 3 of serotype I, 1 of serotype III, and of serotype IV. This diversity contrasts with the prevalence of serotype I in infections of man and animals and the scarcity of type III and IV in these species. The abundance of our isolates is in favour of a large distribution of the germ in this substratum, which can be considered as a potential contamination source.     

Starvation and penetration of bacteria in soils and rocks

Summary The soil and subsurface strata are low nutrient environments and their bacterial inhabitants must adopt starvation responses to survive. These responses include the formation of dormant, viable cells which, although reduced in cell size and volume, are able to respond to any improvement in nutrient availability. Starved bacteria are able to survive for extended periods without nutrients and their reduced size allows them to disperse deeply within rocks and soils greatly improving their penetration. These combined factors may increase opportunities for bacteria to reach a deep waste disposal site.     

Plant uptake of aluminium from calcareous soils

Concentrations of Al in leaf tissue of plants growing on limestone soils (pH ca. 8) are similar to, or do not deviate much from, concentrations in plants growing on acid silicate soils. Aluminium concentrations in the topsoil solution are at least one order of magnitude lower in limestone than in acid silicate soils. Plants seem to absorb Al quite efficiently under moderately alkaline soil conditions. Possible mechanisms for this are discussed.     

The response of plants to acid soils

Summary Interactive effects between acid deposition and the rest of the environment are the key to further understanding. Although this article deals only with plant growth in relation to the chemical state of the soil and not with aerial effects, it is still possible to illustrate a number of interactions and patterns of response among both vascular and non-vascular components of vegetation. Evidence is examined with regard to plant age, pre-treatment and the nature of nutrient supply. It includes consideration of both effects of soil on plants and of plants on soil, notes both antagonisms and symbioses, and draws attention to inducible defence systems.     

A new method for determining the microbial degradation of keratin in soils

Summary Keratin azure was incubated in soils in mesh bags of pore-size 5 m, chosen to allow micro-organisms, but not soil animals access to the substrate. The non-degraded substrate was solubilized and the amount of dye remaining determined as a measure of keratin breakdown.Acknowledgment. Summary The distribution of glycerylphosphorylcholine diesterase in the rat brain has been examined. The enzyme was evenly distributed throughout the brain but was localized in the synaptosome (nerve ending) fraction which was prepared by ultracentrifugation.     

Distribution of repetitious DNA in human chromosomes

Zusammenfassung Studien von in situ DNS/RNS-Hybriden (oder Mischflüssigkeiten) zwischen RNS und verschiedenen Fraktionen von DNS und Metaphase-Chromosomen des Menschen ergaben, dass hauptsächlich die wiederholt vorkommende DNS-Fraktion C _o t = 0 0.005 sich in der centromeren und telomeren Region befindet.

非饱和土水力和力学性状耦合的弹塑性模型研究进展

对非饱和土力学的研究现状进行回顾，在总结前人研究成果并结合当前研究趋势的基础上介绍了能耦合模拟非饱和土水力和力学性状的弹塑性模型。该模型综合考虑到了饱和度对应力应变关系和强度以及变形对水力性质的交叉影响。给出了将耦合弹塑性模型应用于非饱和土体固结问题中进行有限元数值计算的公式。

Distribution of the a blood-group activity in porcine serum

Summary The A blood-group activity of pig serum is bound to a lipid, in some cases also to a nonlipid fraction.
