Molecular mechanism on the energy transfer and conversion in the photosynthetic system

Zusammenfassung Auf molekularer Basis wird die Energieübertragung und die Energieumsetzung in einem primären photosynthetischen System untersucht. Die Energieübertragung in den Pigmenten und im Chlorophyll-A wird mit der Energieübergangswahrscheinlichkeit und dem Diffusionsmodell eines intramolekularen «Exitons» mit Dipol-Dipol-Wechselwirkung behandelt. Bei einer Chlorophyllkonzentration von 0.1M/1 wird die Diffusionskonstante des «Exitons»D _e 1.1 × 10^–3 cm²/sec und seine Diffusionslängel _e 250 Å. Als Energieumsetzung wird die Anregung eines – -Tripletts des Chlorophyll-A mit Hilfe eines paramagnetischen Metallenzyms vorgeschlagen und diskutiert.

Riassunto E' stata studiata l'affinità dei mitocondri di fegato di ratto e di cuore di coniglio per il Ca⁺⁺, nel sistema dipendente da energia. Si sono usati tamponi EGTA-Ca⁺⁺ per mantenere la concentrazione del Ca⁺⁺ costante durante l'esperimento. Si è dimostrato che laK _m apparente per il Ca⁺⁺ non è lontana da 10^–6 M.

Non-visual orientation inTalitrus saltator

Zusammenfassung Die Versuche vonPapi undPardi ^1–6 wurden mitTalitrus saltator wiederholt. Auch unter völligem Lichtabschluss zeigten die Tiere ein noch ähnlich orientiertes Verhalten. Ausschaltung des erdmagnetischen Feldes bis auf 50 konnte die Orientierung im Dunkeln nicht aufheben.     

Influence of cyclic nucleotides on protein synthesis in vascular smooth muscle

Summary The incorporation of leucice-¹⁴C into protein in bovine mesenteric arteries was augmented by cyclic GMP (10^–3 M) and decreased by cyclic AMP (10^–3 M). There was no effect of 5 AMP (10^–3 M). The phosphodiesterase inhibiting drugs theophylline (10^–3 M) and papaverine (5×10^–5 g/ml) both decreased the leucine-¹⁴C incorporation.We are indebted to Mrs.Lena Burlin for hear assistance. Momentum distribution for deuteron clusters in Li6

Zusammenfassung Die Impulsverteilung der Deuteronen-Cluster in Li⁶ wurde mittels eines einfachen Cluster-Modells mit Werten für Parameter vonPearlstein et al. berechnet. Die Rechnungsergebnisse werden mit Messergebnissen vonGarron et al. bei der Reaktion Li⁶ (p, pd) verglichen. Das einfache Cluster-Modell gibt brauchbare Resultate, wie das für die Impulsverteilungen der Protonen in Li⁶ teilweise der Fall war.     

Dissociation-constants of metal-ion-complexes with alkaline phosphatase from pig kidney

Summary Using metal-ion buffers it was possible to remove Zn²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Mn²⁺ ions of pig kidney alkaline phosphatase reversibly. The dissociation constants obtained are K_EMg:4·10^–7 M, K_EMn:4·10^–8 M and K_EZn:8·10^–13 M (22°C, pH:9.6, :0.07).Acknowledgement: The authors thank Dr.H. U. Cell wall degradation in senescing tobacco leaf discs

Zusammenfassung In ausgestanzten Blattstücken vonNicotiana tabacum, welche auf Wasser schwimmend inkubiert werden, findet im Verlauf von 7 Tagen ein beträchtlicher Abbau der Hemizellulose statt. Benzyladenin (10^–5 M) verzögert den Abbau, Abscisinsäure (5×10^–5 M) verstärkt ihn. Der Gehalt an Zellulose verändert sich im Verlauf der Alterung kaum.

Effects of three synthetic peptides analogous to neurohypophyseal hormones on the excitability of giant neurones ofAchatina fulica Férussac

Summary Deamino-dicarba-(d-d-)oxytocin andd-d-Arg-vasotocin at 10^–4 kg/l showed an excitatory effect on the periodically oxcillating neurone (PON) ofAchatina fulica Férussac.d-d-Arg-vasopressin had no effect.     

Sur l'action de l'acide 2,4-dichlorophénoxyacétique sur la croissance des racines deZea mays et dePisum cultivéesin vitro

Summary (1) A response ofZea mays andPisum roots cultured aseptically to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid has been observed.Depending on the concentrationZea mays shows an increase of the growth rate (optimal concentration 10^–11 mol) which turns over to an inhibition (above 10^–7 mol). The curve is similar to that obtained by 3-indoleacetic acid, which proves the phytohormonal character of 2,4-D.(2) ThePisum root is more sensitive than theZea mays root. A concentration of 10^–7 molinhibitsPisum in a high degree, whileZea mays is no more inhibited, thus demonstrating the selective herbicidal action of 2,4-D against isolated roots of Dicotyledons culturedin vitro.     

Regulation ofL-valine absorption by opioids interacting withμ-receptors in rabbit ileum

In intact tissue, [d-Ala²,MePhe⁴, Gly-ol⁵] enkephalin (10^–5 M;-ligand), diminsihed short-circuit current (I_sc) and increased water, Na⁺ and Cl^– net fluxes in vitro under open circuit conditions; it also inhibitedL-valine absorption andL-valine-dependent variations of short-circuit current (I_{sc, val}). Naloxone (10^–6 M) antagonized these effects. In the absence of the muscularis and myenteric plexus this enkephalin or morphine (-ligand) reduced I_sc and I_{sc, val}. These enkephalin effects occurred at different times. Different concentrations of enkephalin were tested for their effects on I_{sc, val}. [d-Ala²,d-Leu⁵] enkephalin (mainly a -ligand) significantly decreased I_sc but not I_{sc, val}. The reduction ofL-valine absorption does not depend on the effects on basal ion transport. Interaction of opioids with-receptors located in the submucosal plexus and/or in the epithelial cell accounts for this reduction. This enkephalin effect seems to be at least partially under the control of the myenteric plexus.

Summary The incorporation of tyrosine-2-¹⁴C-¹⁵N into xanthocillin X (I) byPenicillium notatum Westling has been investigated showing that nitrogen of the isocyano groups originates from tyrosine, which is incorporated as C₆-C₂-N-unit.

Shock effects onEuglena gracilis: The effect of the pressure duration

Résumé Les cultures d'Euglena gracilis ont été soumises à des chocs de 20 et 40 (1.21 et 2.41 kg/cm²). La pression engendrée par une pulsation durait de 25µsec, 4 et 10 sec. Über Struktur und Aktivität der den H2O2-Zerfall katalysierenden Cu2+-Komplexe. — VI. Differenzierung von nativer RNS und nativer DNS bzw. denaturierter DNS auf Grund der katalytischen Eigenschaften

Summary The catalysis of H₂O₂ decomposition by Cu²⁺-complexes of RNA and DNA has been investigated. It is shown that both complexes decompose H₂O₂, but only the Cu²⁺-RNA-system shows peroxidative activity too, e.g. only in this case the nucleotide bases are degraded. Thermal denaturation of DNA also leads to a Cu²⁺-complex with peroxidative activity, the latter being dependent on the degree of denaturation.

Le chlore,oligo-élément indispensable pourLemna minor

Zusammenfassung Mit einer nachBroyer undStout gereinigten Nährlösung konnte nicht bewiesen werden, dass Cl^– ein fürLemna minor unentbehrliches Ion sei. Es wurde deshalb eine neue Reinigungsmethode ausgearbeitet, die eine Verminderung des Cl^–-Gehaltes der Nährlösung auf weniger als 10 µg/l erlaubt. In einer derart behandelten Nährlösung zeigtLemna minor folgende Mangelsymptome: Verschwinden der Wurzel, Chlorose und sehr starke Verkleinerung der Blätter. Beigabe von Cl^– zur Nährlösung genügt, um die Mangelsymptome zu verhüten oder sie zu kompensieren. Unter den angegebenen Bedingungen benötigtLemna minor ungefähr 100 µg Cl^–/l.     

Folic acid and the inhibition of brain L-glutamic decarboxylase

Summary Folic acid competitively inhibited brainl-glutamic decarboxylase (K _i=1.62×10^–3 M). This inhibition could possibly be associated with epilepsy.This work was supported by the United Parkinson Foundation.     

Effect of choline salicylates and some other analogues of salicylic acid on the replication of EMC virus in vitro

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine 90–99,9%ige Hemmung in vitro der Replikation des EMC-Virus durch 0,5–2 m molare Lösungen folgender Salicylsäurederivate festgestellt: Cholinsalicylat, Cholinacetoxysalicylat und der Natriumsalze von 2-Merkaptobenzoesäure, Salicylsäure sowie Acetylsalicylsäure. Ferner wurde eine etwa 70%ige Hemmung des Natriumsalzes der Sulphosalicylsäure, des Cholin-p-chlorobenzoates, sowie des Cholin-o-chlorobenzoates beobachtet. Cholin-p-oxybenzoat und Cholin-p-acetoxybenzoat zeigten hingegen keine Hemmungsaktivität.

Nachweis von Scilliglaucosidin in den Zwiebeln vonBowiea volubilis Harvey

Summary Hellebrigenin was converted to Scilliglaucosidin-19-ol and 3-Epi-Scilliglaucosidin-19-ol. This proves the correctness of the assumption ofStoll et al. ³ that the aldehydic group of Scilliglaucosidin is in position C-10.Comparison of a reduction product of Nabogenin, a substance isolated earlier from the bulbs ofBowiea volubilis Harvey, with Scilliglaucosidin-19-ol and 3-Epi-Scilliglaucosidin-19-ol showed its identity with the first named compound. This proves that the so called Nabogenin was a mixture consisting mainly of Scilliglaucosidin.

Antigenic similarity of humanα 1-antitrypsin to a corresponding protein in the serum of non-human primates

Zusammenfassung Mit der Methode der Präzipitationshemmung nachHerzenberg et al.⁶ wurde die Kreuzreaktion von Seren subhumaner Primaten mit einem Antiserum gegen menschliches ₁-Antitrypsin gemessen. Die Ergebnisse stimmen mit der geltenden Taxonomie gut überein. ₁-Antitrypsin hat sich während der Evolution offenbar weniger konservativ verhalten als Serumalbumin.
