Acrosomal hydrolases in buffalo spermatozoa

Summary Buffalo sperm acrosome resembles its counterpart in other species, being rich in hydrolytic enzymes. Of the enzyme activities estimated, acid phosphatase, -N-acetylglucosaminidase and hyaluronidase were low compared to those of ram semen. However, the aryl sulphatase activity was high. GOT activity estimated in sperm preparation may not be of acrosomal origin.NDRI publication No. 75-129.We should like to thank Dr.D. Uptake of glusose-C14 and fructose-C14 by buffalo spermatozoa in extenders during cold storage

Buffalo spermatozoa exhibit insignificant uptake of glucose-C14 and fructose-C14 when semen samples were preserved in cold for 96 h in 2 extenders. Incorporation of C14 in spermatozoa, TCA precipitable proteins and soluble sugar phosphates was either equal or less in semen samples preserved in cold. CAW appeared to be a better extender than SKMEY as revealed by sugar uptake in cold.

Metabolism of amphibian spermatozoa in relation to their motility.

Bufo arenarum spermatozoa were able to sustain motility both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In aerobiosis, the oxygen consumption varies between 2.6 and 4.2 microliter O2/10(8) cells/h at 30 degree C. The synthesis of lactic acid by anaerobic spermatozoa demonstrated the existence of an active glycolytic pathway.

Experimental evidence conclusively indicates that the epididymis is under endocrine control and plays an active role in the process of spermatic maturation.     

Acid hydrolases of the coccidian Eimeria tenella

Activities of acid hydrolases were higher in sporozoites of Eimeria tenella than in unsporulated and sporulated oocysts. These enzymes along with proteinases may be involved in the penetration of epithelial cells of chicken cecum by sporozoites.     

Lysosomal hydrolases in lymphoid tissue from germ-free and neonatal rats

Zusammenfassung Die Ergebnisse histochemischer Färbeverfahren für -Galaktosidase und -Glukuronidase in lymphoiden Geweben von keimfreien Ratten sind ähnlich denjenigen von neugeborenen Tieren. Diese Daten stellen einen zusätzlichen Beweis für die wichtige Rolle der Antigene bei der normalen neonatalen Entwicklung der lysosomalen Enzymaktivität dar.     

Inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity of human spermatozoa by spermine.

Sperm motility and metabolism are dependent upon the levels of cyclic AMP. Our studies have demonstrated that spermine by inhibiting sperm phosphodiesterase activity could regulate sperm physiology.     

The first multi-flagellate spermatozoa in the animal kingdom, discovered in Mastotermes darwiniensis.

In this paper the spermatozoa of Mastotermes darwiniensis is described. It is the first example of multiflagellate animal sperm cell, consisting of a conical head and about hundred flagella. Other remarkable features are the absence of acrosome, the centrioles made up by doublets instead of triplets and the axonemes devoid of central tubules and with doublets bearing only one arm. The flagella are feebly motile.     

Excretion of acid hydrolases during molting inPhilosamia ricini

Summary The level of the acid hydrolases -glucuronidase (EC 3.2.3.11), acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2) and acid protease (EC 3.4.4) was studied during larval growth and molting inP. ricini. The level of activity of these enzymes remained low during larval growth; however, the level increased sharply at the time of molting and declined sharply thereafter in the newly ecdysed insect. Interestingly, the diminished activity of these enzymes was almost quantitatively recovered in the cast-off cuticle. The excretion of acid hydrolases through the cast-off cuticle has hitherto not been reported in insects during molting.
