The effect of cortisone on the teratogenic action of acetylsalicylic acid and diphenylhydantoin in the mouse

Summary Acetylsalicylic acid exerted a potentiating effect on cortisone-induced teratogenicity in the mouse. Diphenylhydantoin remained uneffective in this respect.     

Differences in teratogenic response and in capacity to repair in embryos of two inbred strains of mice

Zusammenfassung Die Wirkung des Farbstoffes Trypanblau auf die embryonale Entwicklung von 2 Mäusestämmen, des C57B1/6 Stammes und des Swiss-Albino-Stammes, wurde untersucht und die Ergebnisse wurden miteinander verglichen. Embryonen der beiden Stämme reagierten in verschiedener Weise auf Trypanblau. Die Injektion des Farbstoffes führte zum vollständigen Entwicklungsstillstand aller C57B1/6-Embryonen, während bei Swiss-Albino-Embryonen hauptsächlich Kopf-, Gehirn-und Schwanzabnormitäten auftraten. Bei Swiss-Embryonen nahm die Schwere der Abnormität mit fortschreitendem Alter der Embryos beträchtlich ab, obwohl die Anzahl pro Wurf unverändert blieb. Keine Veränderung in der Zahl der Abnormitäten wurde in älteren C57B1/6-Embryonen beobachtet. Die verschiedenartige Reaktion der beiden Stämme auf Trypanblau ist vielleicht darauf zurückzuführen, dass genetisch bedingte Unterschiede in der Fähigkeit, zerstörtes Gewebe während der embryonalen Entwicklung zu reparieren, vorhanden sind.

Changes in the lipoproteins of rabbits on a high-fat,cholesterol-free diet; preventive action of metformin

Summary Endogenous hypercholesterolemia induced by a cholesterol-free, high-fat diet corresponds to an increase in the level of low density lipoproteins and their enrichment in cholesterol esters. Metformin has no effect on the rise in plasma cholesterol but completely prevents the appearance of cholesterol-rich low-density lipoprotein.     

Naloxone prevents the analgesic action of alpha-MSH in mice

alpha-MSH (0.1, 1, 10 micrograms) was administered intracerebroventricularly and its action on pain sensitivity was investigated by the hot-plate method in mice. alpha-MSH produced dose-dependent analgesia and this analgesic effect was prevented by naloxone (1 mg/kg, s.c.). It is possible that alpha-MSH may play a role in the mechanism of pain through endogeneous opioid systems.     

Evidence of intercolonial food exchange in fire ants and other Myrmicinae,using radioactive phosphorus

Summary Food exchange occurred as an appeasement response in distant ant colonies ofSolenopsis invicta, S. geminata, andPheidole dentata. More regurgitated radioactive fluid was given to major workers than to minors by the donors from the alien colonies of these species.     

Different action of alpha-methyl-DOPA on sleep and labyrinth learning in 2 inbred strains of mice]

In two inbred mice strains C 57 BR and C 57 BL/6 presenting the same type of sleep, but a different capacity of learning, Alpha-Methyl-Dopa (100 mg/kg) injected after every session, suppresses paradoxical sleep completely for 9 to 11 h. Maze-learning performance is retarded in C 57 BR mice, but facilitated in C 57 BL/6.     

Blockade of uptake of norepinephrine in rodents byα,α-dimethylphenethylaminopropan-2-one

Zusammenfassung Es wurde gefunden, dass die strukturverwandte Verbindung,-Dimethylphenethylaminopropan-2-on (AY-18 627) für das Blockieren der Norepinephrinaufnahme im Rattenherzen wirksamer ist als AY-14 948. Unter gegebenen Versuchsbedingungen riefen diese Verbindungen weder eine Änderung im endogenen Bereich der Hirn- und Herzkatecholamine noch im Serotoningehalt des Rattenhirns hervor.     

Low virulence and immunogenicity in mice and in rabbits of variants ofHerpes simplex virus resistant to 5-iodo-2-deoxyuridine

Résumé Par passage en série sur des cellules en culture et en présence de 5-iodo-2-desoxyuridine (IUdR) on a obtenu une souche de virus herpétique résistant à l'IUdR. Cette souche est très peu virulente chez la souris et le lapin, mais est capable de protéger ces animaux contre le virus pathogène d'origine.
