浅谈跨文化交际与外语教学

The nature of metaphor is not only a matter of language,but also a matter of mind. Metaphor,as a kind of common language phenomenon,reflects different cultural models used in different languages,that is called cognitive models. The application of metaphorical concept shows that the metaphor cognition is universal across cultures,but at the same time,it has some differences in their application because of their different social and cultural backgrounds. We should consider the factor of context when perform cross-cultural communication in order to avoid the misunderstanding between different cultures.     

How Should an Understanding of the Process of Language Development Affect the Practice of Teaching English as a Foreign Language?

This essay firstly has a brief review on three theoretical approaches:behaviourism,innatism and interactionism,and their relationship with language acquisition.Then it points out the significance of understanding the process oflanguage development in the practice of classroom teaching English as a foreign language.Furthermore,some constractive suggestions are put forward in order that English teachers may achieve more in their English teaching.     

On Structural Metaphors of Time in English and Chinese

According to the cognitive approach,metaphor is not only a matter of rhetoric language but a matter of thought,a point that is fully construed in Lakoff’s conceptual metaphor theory.Based on the theory,this paper analyzes the structural metaphors of time in English and Chinese.     

The Teacher's Role and Teaching Procedures in the Teaching of Oral English

English teachers in China are aware that what kind of English teaching method should be employed to improve student＇s linguistic acquisition and that communicative competence becomes more and more important. In English teaching, teachers always make it possible for students to be more often in contacts with the English language, thus creating an atmosphere of learning English language. Help students to jump over the gap between only reading English loudly and speaking English fluently. Here I will show the importance of the teachers＇ role in English teaching and their applies in oral English teaching.     

Cultural Contents Taught in English Teaching

Language and culture are closely related to each other.From the aspect of language as the semiotic system,language is the carrier of culture and culture is the entailment of language.The language of any nation bears the deep content of its culture.It can be said that language is the reflection of a nation's culture.Therefore the learning of a language must be connected with the acquisition of the corresponding culture.In the English classrooms English teacher should teach the language and the culture as well.This paper deals with both the cultural contents to be taught and the principles of teaching them in the English classrooms.     

Application of Mind Map in College English Vocabulary Teaching

Vocabulary is one of the three important parts of any language and it is also the cornerstone of any language.So the vocabulary teaching is very important in language teaching.Because vocabulary is stored in our mind in a semantic network,applying mind map to vocabulary teaching and learning can facilitate the activation of various semantic relations among words in the mind,which greatly promotes the learners’deep processing of vocabulary.Second,words are usually related to one another in the form of cohesions in the context.Constructing mind map of vocabulary in the text can make more noticeable the interrelations among words in the text,which will enhance the participants’language proficiency.The author of the present thesis attempts to prove that mind mapaided vocabulary teaching has a more positiveeffect on enlarging participants’vocabulary,though both approaches to vocabulary teaching have positive influence on participants’vocabu-lary growth.This study reveals that it is rational and feasible to apply mind map and Visual Thesaurus to college English vocabulary teaching and learning.     

The Application of CALL in Higher Vocational College

In recent years,with the rapid development of the informational,the digital and audio-visual technology,multimedia technology and its application have also entered a new development era in people’s life,especially in the academic field.In China,Computer Assisted Language Learning(CALL) has a far-reaching influence on the reforming and modernization of the education,and has brought about a new revolution in foreign language teaching and learning.The study,by means of a self-designed questionnaire,conducted a survey of the application of CALL with 120 English majors and 30 English teachers in a certain higher vocational college which the author works in.The study hopes that,with the help of the technological advantages of CALL and the rich on-line information resources via computers,the students’ study could be carried out in a more effective and convenient way.The results of statistical analysis revealed that,the majority of the students and teachers hold a positive attitude toward CALL application in language teaching and learning,though they have reported some weaknesses of CALL.According to the analysis,the paper attempts to discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of multimedia technology in English teaching and suggests several proposals to better the use of CALL.     

Implications of Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis on Second Language Teaching

1 IntroductionForeign language teaching generally refers to the theory and practice of teaching a foreign language.It has close connection with linguistics,psychology,education,philosophy,sociology and other disciplines.Since linguistics and foreign language teaching both study language phenomena on the aspects of theory and practice,the two are much closely related to each other.Linguistics is beneficial to language teaching in two aspects: Firstly,applied linguistics extends theoretical linguistics in the direction of language learning and teaching,so that the teacher is enabled to make better decisions on the goal and content of the teaching.Secondly,applied linguistics states the insights and implications that linguistic theories have on the language teaching methodology.Once the goal and content of the teaching are settled,the teacher has to consider questions of how to teach.As an English teacher it really enriches my mind on what to teach and how to teach more effectively.This paper will focus on Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis and its implications on second language teaching.     

Is It Practical to Adopt Communicative Language Teaching in China

Language is a means of communication.No doubt that foreign language teaching is to cultivate students' communicative competence of using a foreign language.As the country with the largest population learning English in the world,China is deeply involved in communicative language teaching.Communicative approach in English language teaching is frequently discussed and debated.It is believed by many linguists and teachers to be an effective method to solve some of the teaching and learning problems.But as far as the effective ways of teaching and learning a foreign language is concerned,people have some controversial ideas.The teaching method which have been used in China's English teaching were: grammar-translation method,listening and speaking method and situation method.     

A Comparative Study of Grammar Teaching in the Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingual and Communicative Approaches

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the role of grammar in English language teaching. Grammar teaching has become a preoccupation among more and more language researchers and teachers. This paper sets out to compare the views of grammar teaching in the Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingual and Communicative Approaches from the following five points, the status of grammar teaching, the different methods in the instruction of grammar, the teacher’s role in grammar teaching, the characteristics of typical teaching activities in the three approaches with detailed examples and the effect of the three approaches to grammar teaching.It is concluded that grammar teaching should subscribe to an eclectic approach, that is, to take advantage of the strong points of each approach and avoid their weak points. Moreover, grammar teaching should be conducted according to the variables of learners and teaching circumstances.     

A Brief Survey Study of English Grammar Teaching Issues and Strategies at Medical College

In this paper the author wants to do two things. Firstly,the author wants to look back at the grammar teaching issues that in her English class——teaching and the reason why the students always do not study the English grammar well. Secondly,this project makes a survey of,the different strategies of English grammar teaching to solve the different issues which the students face in their English learning and in the English teachers’ teaching at Medical College.     

The Problems in English Testing System

Testing is a means of enabling quality of teachers’ teaching and acquisition of students’ language learning. Considering the problems existing in the current English education and testing system, teachers should try to improve the validity and reliability of English language testing,which should cover 5 skills: the competence of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation.     

CLT in the Chinese Language Teaching Context

Communicative Language Teaching is considered as an efficient approach to second language acquisition. This article tries to give a general introduction to CLT and its current situation in English teaching in China by pointing out the difficulties CLT faces in China as well as giving some suggestions for the perfection of CLT in Chinese language teaching context.     

On Cultivating Students' Self-learning Ability and Application of Multimedia into College English Teaching

Multimedia teaching method has been widely used in college English teaching. It has contributed a lot to higher teaching quality. We should change our teaching ideas and recognize its impersonal attribute as one kind of teaching method. Developing College Students’ English Speaking Skills in Chinese Context

As one of the four important communication skills,speaking has long been neglected in the language teaching,while oral English teaching has always been the weak points in college English education.Since China began to reform and open the door to the outside world,oral English becomes more and more important.However,the traditional oral English education failed to meet the demand of social development,for many graduates couldn’t communicate in English smoothly.This is due to the inappropriateness of traditional oral English education.The thesis is to discuss the present condition of Chinese students in oral classroom and sets up a new teaching model.In this part the new model is discussed in detail from the perspective of students,teaching materials,teacher,and teaching method.     

World English and the Future of English Language Teaching in China

The development and wide spread of English language has led to the internationalization and localization of English language, during which English language is widely used in international communications by people with different mother tongues, in addition, English variations on different levels and local varieties have emerged. In consideration to the changes above, this paper aims to, firstly, examine the status of English language as an international language （EIL）; secondly, explore the future of English language teaching （ELT） in China under a global context.     

Tautology and its Prototype Account

Tautology a type of interesting language phenomenon existing in many languages.It has its particular characteristics of syntax and semantics.In recent years,it has aroused great attention both home and abroad.This paper first reviews the syntactic and semantic approaches to the study of it and then analyzes tautological utterances from the aspect of cognition in the theory of prototype.Based on the prototypical construction"X is X",it comes to the conclusion that the interpretation of tautology can be attributed to the cognitive process in which an entity is categorized by people.     

TEACHING PRONUNCIATION TO EFL STUDENTS

pronunciation teaching is considered as a basic course in English as a foreign language teaching in China. As we all know that English is a tool of communication between Chinese people and the people abroad,it is very important to have good pronunciation in order to communicate effectively. Though that good pronunciation is necessary for the mastery of a foreign language is accepted as axiomatic by most teachers, yet how the idea translates into the methodologies and techniques of the FEL classroom is still a question. This article will introduce as well as discuss some research findings and some approaches that we may find effective in pronunciation teaching.     

Cultivation of EFL Learners’Intercultural Competence

Nowadays, educators from home and abroad believe that learning a foreign language means learning a great deal of the foreign civilization and culture. And the utmost goal of language teaching is to cultivate EFL learners’communicative competence, but not merely the linguistic knowledge. Thus, teaching a foreign language is more than teaching new words, expressions and grammar rules, but should also incorporate the target culture elements into language knowledge. In order to improve EFL learners’English proficiency, teachers must make efforts to cultivate EFL learners’intercultural competence and promote their sensibility and adaptability to the differences between Chinese culture and the Western culture. Only by doing so, can EFL learners communicate with native speakers appropriately and smoothly. This paper proposes some effective teaching techniques and methods that can be applied in English classroom to cultivate Chinese EFL learners’intercultural competence.
