Partial characterization of the histones of the hepatopancreas and testis of the shrimp Palaemon serratus]

The chromatin of Palaemon serratus hepatopancreas and testes has been isolated. All the classes of histones are present in the fractions studied so far. However, F1 harbors some characteristics different from that of Calf thymus F1. Moreover a supplementary fraction of low molecular weight can be detected in the testes.     

Ultrastructure of the pineal gland after hypohysectomy

Résumé Nous avons étudié les modifications de l'ultrastructure de la glande pinéale du rat après hypophysectomie et constaté: (a) une atrophie du réticulum endoplasmique, (b) réduction des ribosomes, (c) dépletion du matériel sécrétoire des granules, (d) altération des mitochondries, (e) réduction dans le volume des noyaux et des nucléoles et (f) un agrandissement de l'espace périvasculaire. Il est très probable que l'hypophyse antérieure est nécessaire pour maintenir la structure et la sécrétion de la glande pinéale, mais le mécanisme par quoi s'exerce ce contrôle reste encore inconnu.     

In vitro protein synthesis and alpha amylase activity in F cells from hepatopancreas of Palaemon serratus (Crustacea; Decapoda).

In crustaceans, all the steps in the assimilation of food take place in the hepatopancreas. To facilitate the study of this organ, a method for the dissociation of cell types was developed. The hepatopancreas of the prawn Palaemon serratus was mechanically dissociated and the cells separated by Percoll density-gradient centrifugation. The E and R cells had similar densities of around 1.05 g/ml. The F cells were separated into two distinct fractions with densities of 1.075 and 1.082 g/ml. The B cells sedimented at a density of 1.12 g/ml. The ratio between the two populations of F cells was found to vary during the intermolt cycle while B cells disappeared after the molt. When the density gradient fractions were incubated with 3H-leucine, incorporation was highest in the F cell fractions. Measurements of alpha-amylase activity, indicated that the two populations of F cells may be derived from the same cell type.     

Demonstration of exocytosis in the sinus gland of Astacus Leptodactylus (Nordmann) under the influence of serotonin injections]

Following a serotonin injection, a rise of exocytosis in the sinus gland of the crayfish Astacus leptodactylus is observed together with an increase of the glucose level in the hemolymph. The phenomenon of exocytosis reaches a peak between 2 and 4 h after injection, wheras the highest glucose level in the hemolymph appears between 4 and 6 h after the same injection.

Zusammenfassung An ultradünnen Schnittpr?paraten von Speicheldrüsenchromosomen (Drosophila melanogaster) und an entsprechenden Quetschpr?paraten (Drosophila virilis) wurde elektronenmikroskopisch festgestellt: Die Chromomeren und Chromonemata bestehen aus Filamenten mit Schraubenwindungen vom ?paran?mischen? Typus. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass die Windungen der beiden Filamente in der entgegengesetzten Richtung ranken.

Identification of actin microfilaments in the neurosecretory axons of rat neural lobe]

Incubation of rat neural lobes with heavy meromyosin (HMM) after prolonged glycerination, induced characteristic arrowhead decoration of a number of microfilaments at different levels of the neurosecretory axons. In non terminal sections of axons the labelled microfilaments showed preferential relationships with microtubules in addition to occasional contacts with the axolemma and various axonal organelles. In axonal endings, they were mainly associated to microvesicles and appeared to be anchored on the axolemma facing the perivascular space at the level of membranous densifications.     

Demonstration of a 2d LH-RH neurosecretory system in the duck hypothalamus]

Using immunocytochemical techniques with an anti-LH-RH immuneserum, evidence of two neuronal systems secreting LH-RH has been shown in the Duck hypothalamus. In addition to the previously described system, located in the preoptic nucleus, a second system could be demonstrated in the infundibular nucleus. The perikarya of the infundibular LH-RH producing neurons were significantly smaller than those of the preoptic neurons. On the other hand, under the experimental conditions used, the infundibular system had approximately five times less LH-RH secreting neurons than the preoptic system, and its perikarya appeared less heavily loaded in IR LH-RH. The LH-RH containing axons from both neuronal populations ran down to the external layer of the median eminence, where they ended in close contact with the capillaries of the hypophysial portal system.

Resumen Es describida la ultraestrutura de un segundo tipo de célula glandular mucosa que es encontrada en el pié ambulacrario de la estrella del marAsterina stellifera. Los gránulos secretores de esta célula tienen en su interior una ultraestrutura en forma de pequeños puntos densos y delicadas fibrillas, mas faltando una organizatión, principalmente comparada con la organizatión del otro tipo de granulo mucoso, también encontrado en el mismo pié ambulacrario.     

Immunocytochemical anatomy of alpha granules in the human endocrine pancreas]

Using the sensitive protein A-gold technique for the demonstration of antigenic sites in thin section for electron microscopy it was found that in the alpha granules of human pancreas, glucagon immunoreactivity (specific, C-terminal) is restricted to the dense granule core while glicentin immunoreactivity predominates on the peripheral halo surrounding the dense core.     

Solubility of the neurosecretory products of Crepidula fornicata Phil., a prosobranch mullusk]

Study of solubility of neurosecretory products in Crepidula fornicata shows that the presence of ethanol in the fixative is incompatible with good fixation. This character permits the choice of a more effective extraction technique. An experimental study in organ culture shows that the action of differentiation of brain appears in the extract obtained by this method.     

Effect of transmembrane potential on noradrenaline transport in chromaffin granules]

Imposing a transmembrane potential positive with respect to the medium on chromaffin granule ghosts increased the initial rate of the delta pH-induced uptake of noradrenaline, whereas imposing a negative potential decreased this rate. The increase of the uptake rate was proportional to the potential. The ATP-induced uptake of noradrenaline was also sensitive to the potential since imposing a transient negative potential onto the positive potential generated by the membrane ATPase induced a latency in this transport.     

On the significance of the rostral process of bipolar neurosecretory cells in the caudal neurosecretory system of certain catfishes

Summary Neurosecretory substance has been identified in the rostral process of bipolar neurosecretory cells of the caudal neurosecretory system in 4 Indian catfishes, using acid violet stain. Ultrastructure of the rat neurohypophysis following electric stimulation of the supraoptic nuclei]

By means of electrical stimulation of the supraoptic nuclei, in a stereotaxic apparatus, partial or complete degranulation of the neurohypophysis is obtained, with often a continued presence of large vesicles; the number of microvesicles is always increased.
