Blood volume and extracellular space (ECS) of the whole body and some organs of the rat

Summary Methods are described for estimation of blood volume and extracellular space (ECS) in the whole body and in some organs with⁵¹Cr,¹⁴C-thiocyanate and³H-inulin. A mean blood volume of 47 ml/kg, a thiocyanate space of 350 ml/kg and a inulin space of 288 ml/kg were determined in the rat. The corresponding values of organs are shown in figures 1–3.     

Histamine-induced hypotension modified by H1 and H2 antagonists in the monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Summary Blocking H₂ receptors with burimamide in the dose used (20 mg/kg) approximately doubles the amount) of histamine needed to produced the same effect as seen when H₁ antagonists (chlorpheniramine or mepyramine) are used alone. TheK ₂ ratios for chlorpheniramine-chlorpheniramine plus burimamide are 117–204 and for mepyramine-mepyramine phus burimamide are 200–478. H₁ and H₂ receptors, in the monkey, when stimulated, both cause cardiovascular responses in the same direction.     

Quantitation of cutaneous blood circulation in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Zusammenfassung Die Durchblutung der Haut von Rhesus-Affen (Macaca mulatta) wurde mittels Verteilung radioaktiver Kügelchen gemessen und beträgt etwa 7% des HerzMinutenvolumens.     

Pre- and post-natal ontogeny of neutral endopeptidase 24-11 ('enkephalinase') studied by in vitro autoradiography in the rat.

Neutral endopeptidase (NEP, enkephalinase, CALLA) which is present in various neural and non-neural tissues, is able to cleave a variety of regulatory peptides. The distribution of NEP has been studied during rat pre- and post-natal development by autoradiography after in vitro binding of the tritiated inhibitor [3H]HACBO-Gly to whole-body and organ sections. In the central nervous system (CNS), where the presence of NEP has been related to the termination of the action of enkephalins, the external layer of the olfactory bulbs is the only structure prominently labeled before birth. Other CNS structures rich in NEP in the adult, such as the nigrostriatal tract, are progressively labeled after birth. Outside the CNS, the progressive appearance of NEP in the kidney, the lungs and the salivary glands suggests its concomitant involvement in adult physiological functions, including fluid balance control, possibly by cleaving the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and other peptides. On the other hand, transient or enhanced expression of NEP is observed during the development of several organs such as the sensory organs, the heart and the major blood vessels, the intestine, the bones and the genital tubercle. In addition to the still incompletely known physiological functions of the enzyme, the developmental pattern of its expression in several tissues strongly suggests a modulatory role for NEP in the ontogeny of a large number of organs.

Effect of Corynebacterium parvum on serum lysozyme (muramidase) levels (author's transl)]

An i.v. injection of 548 microgram of killed Corynebacterium parvum into C57B1 mice leads to significant changes in serum lysozyme (muramidase) levels. After an initial fall at 24 h, the activity of the enzyme increased progressively, reached a peak on the 9th day and returned to control range after the 15th day.     

Study of the mitotic activity during the preneoplastic period in the liver of rats treated by diethylnitrosamine (author's transl)]

The chronic administration of diethylnitrosamine in drinking water induces liver tumors in the rat. The preneoplastic period may be divided in two phases differing mainly in the loss of circadian control of mitotic activity in hepatocytes.     

Lipids in the egg shell of the ostrich (Struthio camelus) (author's transl)]

The egg shell (with cuticle) of the ostrich contained a total lipid concentration of 0.19 mg/g egg shell; the phospholipids constituted the major portion, among the neutral' lipids cholesterol esters, cholesterol and free fatty acids were identified. The egg shell lipids showed a stimulating effect on the crystal growth of calcium carbonate; the highest rate of crystal growth was observed with the phospholipid fraction.     

Simian virus 40 infection of uninoculated african green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) revealed by repeated cell passages

Résumé Nous avons trouvé le virus SV₄₀ chez le singeCercopithecus aethiops présumé non infecté. Par la méthode de culture des cellules du rein et en effectuant des passages rapides nous avons pu démontrer l'existence du virus même chez les animaux dépourvus d'anticorps et même dans le cas où le virus n'apparaissait pas durant le premier passage.     

Activity of the corpora allata of diapausing females of Tetrix undulata (SWRB) (Orthoptera-Tetrigidae)]

The implantation of one or two pairs of corpora allata of diapausing females in another diapausing females (two weeks old) induces vitellogenesis and laying of one, two or three egg-pods in a great number of females. The denervation of the corpora-allata of a diapausing female also induced vitellogenesis. These results suggeste that corpora-allata of diapausing females are not active. The denervation induces the break of the inhibition "travelling" by the corpora-allata-cardiaca nerves or stimulates the corpora-allata.     

The effect on the onset of puberty of whole body irradiation of infant female rats with and without hypothalamic lesions

Résumé Les résultats obtenus suggèrent que la lésion de l'hypothalame provoquée par la microcoagulation accélère l'apparition de la puberté des rats totalement irradiés aux rayons X, ce qui est le cas aussi chez des rats normaux. Mais l'apparition de la puberté est retardée proportionnellement aux doses de rayons X appliquées, indépendamment de la microcoagulation.
