Replication of intranucleolar DNA in smittia (diptera,chironomidae)

Riassunto Ghiandole salivari di larve diSmittia (Chironomidae) sono state incubate in vitro in presenza di timidina tritiata. Le modalità di marcatura dei cromosomi e dei nucleoli dimostrano che in questo materiale non esiste correlazione tra frequenza di marcatura del DNA intranucleolare e modalità o intensità di marcatura del DNA cromosomico. In particolare sono stati riscontrati casi in cui il DNA intranucleolare appare marcato mentre il DNA cromosomico non è in fase di replicazione. I risultati ottenuti sembrano indicare che il DNA intra-nucleolare inSmittia sia costituito da una o più unità di replicazione autonome.     

The chromosomes ofPasseromyia heterochaeta Villeneuve (Muscidae: Diptera)

Summary The 2 n=10 complement ofPasseromyia heterochaeta Villeneuve consists of 4 pairs of metacentric chromosomes and 1 pair of dots. Mitosis in the haemocytes ofSarcophaga ruficornis (diptera)

Summary Among the haemocytes ofSarcophaga ruficornis, only the prohaemocytes divide. Injection of phytohaemagglutinin-P induces 100% prohaemocytes to undergo mitosis but does not induce mitosis in other cells. Mitotic stages other than the prophase are apparently very short lived.Acknowledgment. Ontogenetic fate of the neurosecretory cells in the larval brain ofSarcophaga ruficornis (fabricius, 1794) (diptera: Cyclorrhapha)

Résumé Il y a quatre groupes, 1, 2, 3 et 4, de cellules neurosécrétrices dans chaque demi-sphère du cerveau larvaire duSarcophaga ruficornis. Pendant la métamorphose, les groupes 1 et 2 deviennent antérieurs dorsaux et forment des cellules neurosécrétrices médiales de la mouche adulte; le groupe 3 devient ventral mais s'évanouit après l'éclosion de la mouche; le groupe 4 s'évanouit aussi, mais plus tôt.     

Invertase activity in the midgut ofSarcophaga ruficornis andMusca domestica (diptera: Insecta)

Summary The pH for the optimum activity of the midgut invertase was 5.5 in the adults ofS. ruficornis, 6.0 in its larvae and adults ofM. domestica and 6.5 in the larvae of the latter fly. The optimum temperature was 50°C. Enzyme activity was retarded by the addition of glucose and fructose.     

Variation in chromosome number in the sheep headflyHydrotaea irritans (Fallen) (Diptera: Muscidae)

Summary Variation in the number of chromosomes was found in sheep headflies, ranging from 12 to 15 chromosomes. Of these, five pairs were common among all individuals. Among 9 larvae no males were identified.     

Monoamine-containing structures in the nerve cord of some representatives of diptera (Insecta)

Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe einer fluoreszenzmikroskopischen Methode wird an zwei Nematocera (S. argyreatum undP. contaminata) gezeigt, dass bestimmte Stellen des Unterschlundganglions und die Ventralganglien biogene Monoamine (wahrscheinlich Dopamin und Noradrenalin) enthalten. Adrenergische Nervenfasern wurden auch in den Konnektiven nachgewiesen.     

Effect of temperature on the neurosecretory activity inNezara viridula Linn. (Heteroptera; pentatomidae)

Zusammenfassung Die neurosekretorischen Zellen und die davon ausgehenden Nerven vonNezara viridula Linn enthalten bei Zucht in niedriger Temperatur bedeutend weniger Neurosekret als in Normaltemperatur.     

Effects of diflubenzuron and tunicamycin on N-acetylglucosaminyl transferases in prepupae of the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans)

Summary Tunicamycin, an antibiotic, and diflubenzuron, an insect growth regulator, were tested to determine their effects on N-acetylglucosaminyl transferase fromS. calcitrans prepupae. Diflubenzuron had no effect, but tunicamycin inhibited the transfer of GlcNAc-1-P from UDP-GlcNAc to dolicholmonophosphate with an I₅₀ of 1.5–4 ng/ml.     

Separation of free amino acids and derivatives in the tsetse flyGlossina palpalis (diptera) by ion-exchange chromatography

Zusammenfassung Mittels Ionenaustausch-Chromatographie konnten 37 freie Ninhydrin-positive Stoffe in adulten Tsetse-Fliegen,Glossina palpalis, aufgetrennt werden. Die meisten Derivate der Aminosäuren wurden vor der Asparaginsäure aus der Harzsäule eluiert, was auf ihre saure Natur hindeutet.

Antifertility effect of aristolic acid fromAristolochia indica (Linn) in female albino rabbits

Somatic chromosomes of black-headed oriole,Oriolus xanthornus (Linn.): A probable case of translocation heterozygosity

Summary 2n=80. There are 7 pairs of macrochromosomes in the male karyotype. In 2 females, besides the sex chromosomes, chromosome 3 and the largest microchromosome are unpaired and there is an additional large unpaired macrochromosome. This aberrant karyotype is best interpreted in terms of a reciprocal translocation heterozygosity, in all likelihood, at the population level.Acknowledgment. Glycogen contents in the rat uterus: response to Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn. extracts.

Ethanolic extracts (50%), as well the benzene extracts, of H. rosa-sinensis Linn. have reduced significantly the glycogen contents in the uterus of adult rat. Both the extracts exhibit a clear-cut dose-response relation. The inhibition in glycogen contents increases as the dose is increased. Of the 2, benzene extract seems to be more potent. The results are due to antiestrogenic nature of the extracts.

Electron probe microanalysis is a very suitable method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of calcium, phosphorus, sulfur and magnesium occurring within integument and digestive gland; variations related to intermolt cycle can be compared.
