Summary In addition to the already known acid phosphatase and -glucuronidase, 2 other lysosomal enzymes: aryl sulphatase and N-acetyl--glucosaminidase were localized by histochemical methods in the renin-containing granules of the mouse juxtaglomerular cells.     

Cholesterol synthesis and related enzymes in rat liver during pregnancy

Summary During pregnancy the synthesis of cholesterol and the activity of 3-hydroxy 3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase fell markedly before parturition; HMGCoA synthase activity was low during pregnancy and fell again immediately before delivery while acetoacetyl-CoA-thiolase was always low and constant.

Effect of starvation on enzymes related to lipid metabolism in guinea-pig lungs

The changes in activities of acetyl CoA carboxylase, microsomal fatty acid elongation enzyme, choline phosphotransferase, triglyceride lipase, phospholipase A1 and phospholipase A2 were followed in guinea-pig lungs at 24, 48 and 72 h after food deprivation. Triglyceride lipase was elevated and phospholipase A1 and phospholipase A2 were unaffected, while the other activities decreased. The significance of these findings in relation to food deprivation is discussed.     

Species difference in the effects of proteolytic enzymes on red cell membrane

Summary Pronase and -chymotrypsin digested the major glycoprotein in the human and mouse red cell membranes and in SDS gel electrophoresis the glycoprotein disappeared accompanied by the appearance of a new band of lower mol.wt. However in the membranes of sheep, rat and rabbit, no digestion was demonstrated. The effects of pronase on anion permeability were almost identical for human and animal erythrocytes.

Zusammenfassung In 6stündigen Intervallen wurde bei der Ratte die Konzentration des Glykogens in der Hirnrinde sowie im Diencephalon, Mesencephalon, Cerebellum und im verl?ngerten Mark festgestellt. Innerhalb von 24 h tritt im Diencephalon — und nur in diesem — periodisch eine signifikante Ver?nderung der Glykogen-Konzentration ein.      

Corticosteroid effects on cholinergic enzymes in ethanol-treated fetal brain cell cultures

Summary In the presence of ethanol, corticosterone and dexamethasone inhibit choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase activities in cultured fetal brain cells of the rat. These results suggest that corticosteroids may have an important influence on the activity of cholinergic enzymes in the fetal brain and may antagonize the effects of ethanol in this setting.

The roles of poly(ADP-ribose)-metabolizing enzymes in alkylation-induced cell death

Poly(ADP-ribose) (PAR) has been identified as a DNA damage-inducible cell death signal upstream of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF). PAR causes the translocation of AIF from mitochondria to the nucleus and triggers cell death. In living cells, PAR molecules are subject to dynamic changes pending on internal and external stress factors. Using RNA interference (RNAi), we determined the roles of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases-1 and -2 (PARP-1, PARP-2) and poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG), the key enzymes configuring PAR molecules, in cell death induced by an alkylating agent. We found that PARP-1, but not PARP-2 and PARG, contributed to alkylation-induced cell death. Likewise, AIF translocation was only affected by PARP-1. PARP-1 seems to play a major role configuring PAR as a death signal involving AIF translocation regardless of the death pathway involved.
