Sclerotization of mosquito cuticle

Summary The mode of sclerotization ofAedes aegypti pupal and adult cuticle was examined by employing biochemical and radioactive techniques. During larval-pupal metamorphosis, tyrosine is converted to tanning precursors and is incorporated into aryl-amino adducts and -crosslinks. The major hydrolysis product of -crosslinks in pupal cases is identified to be arterenone. Examination of tanning modes in five different mosquito species shows that the ratio of quinone to -sclerotization not only differs within the life stages of the insects, but also differs between species.Study supported by N.I.H. The major hydrolysis product of beta-crosslinks in pupal cases is identified to be arterenone. Examination of tanning modes in five different mosquito species shows that the ratio of quinone to beta-sclerotization not only differs within the life stages of the insects, but also differs between species.     

The effects of a novel insecticide on insect cuticle

Zusammenfassung Fütterungsversuche mit einem neuen Insektizid (PH 60–40) an adulten Heuschrecken ergaben, dass der Einbau des Chitins in die Cuticula vollständig gehemmt wird. Hingegen erweist sich der Proteinanteil der Cuticula quantitativ und qualitativ als normal.

Arthropod cuticle features and arthropod monophyly

Summary The following synapomorphic features of the arthropod cuticle: presence of -chitin, similarity of codons for amino acids in cuticle protein, and occurrence of resilin, are cited as evidence for the monophyletic origin of current arthropod classes.     

Resilin in the cuticle of physogastric queen termites

Summary Resilin is present in the endocuticle of the flexible abdominal intersegmental cuticle of the, physogastric queen of the termite,Odontotermes obesus (Rambur). Nature of the cuticle protein of the branchiopod crustaceanStreptocephalus dichotomus

Zusammenfassung Der einzige Proteinbestandteil des BranchiopodenkrebsesStreptocephalus dichotomus zeigt ähnliche chemische Eigenschaften wie kollagene Eiweissverbindungen. Merkmal der Aminosäurezusammensetzung ist eine relativ grosse Menge von Glyzin (etwa 1/3 des Gesamtresiduums), zusätzlich zu Hydroxyprolin und Prolin. Dies wird als Kriterium zur Unterscheidung von kollagenem Protein von den übrigen Eiweissen (K-mef-Gruppe) benützt.     

The postpharyngeal glands and the cuticle of Formicidae contain the same characteristic hydrocarbons

Summary Comparison of the contents of the postpharyngeal gland and cuticular hydrocarbons of five species of ant have shown them to contain the same compounds and to be characteristic of the species. For four species (Formica selysi, Camponotus lateralis, Camponotus vagus andManica rubida), quantitative similarity was very close, but more divergent in the fifth (Myrmica rubra). Glands and cuticle ofM. rubra queens were shown to be closely similar to those of workers, except the glands of queens are larger, but the cuticle of larvae was different from that of adult cuticle and postpharyngeal glands.

Role of symbiotes in tanning of termite cuticle

Résumé Chez la termiteReticulitermes assamensis Gardner la cuticule des ouvriers aposymbiotics est de couleur plus claire que celle des individus normaux. Ceci est dû à l'approvisionnement inadéquat des précurseurs de tannage, en l'absence de la formation de l'exocuticule. La réinfection des formes aposymbiotiques par des symbiotes cause l'acquisition de la couleur ambrée semblable à celle des individus normaux. Il est probable que les composés aromatiques du régime alimentaire des termites sont dus aux symbiotes.

Some histochemical observations on the cuticle of fasciola indica verma, 1953

Résumé Les essais histochimiques pour la présence des protéïnes, graisses, phénols et réticulation aromatique (aromatic cross linkage) et des liaisons -S-S ont été faits sur le cuticule deFasciola indica Verma, 1953, trematode se trouvant dans le foie du buffle indien. Des résultats positifs pour les protéïnes (le groupe glycol) et négatifs pour les graisses, phénols et réticulation aromatique et les liaisons -S-S ont été obtenus.     

Adequate stimulus of the insect tympanic organ

Résumé Les réponses du nerf tympanique des Tettigonides sont conformes à la structure actuelle des transmetteurs du chant naturel mais non pas si le chant est reproduit par enregistrement magnétique ordinaire. On a montré que les constituants ultrasoniques sont essentiels et que les réponses parfaites ne sont obtenues que lorsqu'on a pu produire des fréquences très hautes.
