Summary Alkaline phosphatase activity was determined in rat urine under normal conditions (80 animals) and following mast cell depletion (30 animals). A statistically significant increase in urinary APA was found after administration of the mast-cell depleting compound 48/80. This fourfold increase over normal activity is due to renal changes caused by shock.     

Diaquo-bis-(N-2-picolyloxamidato)-kobalt(II), eine Modellverbindung für die Struktur des Aktivzentrums einer alkalischen Phosphatase ?

Summary N-(2-picolyl)-oxamide, N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-picolyl)-oxamide and N-(2-picolyl)-oxamic acid form green Co(II)-complexes with an unfamiliar type of absorption spectrum. A similar spectrum is found, when Zn²⁺ in alcaline phosphatase is replaced by Co²⁺ via isomorphous substitution and it is suggested that the micro environments of the central atoms in both complexes are closely related. Possible structures of the complexes are discussed.

Aktivierung der Tyrosinhydroxylase durch Homovanillinsäure

Summary Influence of homovanillic acid on tyrosine hydroxylase activity was investigated in homogenates of rat brain: 10^–3 and 10^–4 M HVA/1 were found to increase enzymatic activity significantly. The probability of physiological concentrations also activating DOPA synthesis is discussed.

Summary In 260 normal students, 20–25 years old, the variation in the activities of serum alkaline phosphatase and its isoenzymes with sex, ABO blood groups, and protein intake were studied. The values are on the whole higher in males than in females. The activity of the intestinal isoenzyme was higher in subjects taking protein-rich diet than in those taking protein poor diet.

Heterozygote Zentrenfusion bei einer weissen Laborratte

Summary A centric fusion of 2 acrocentric chromosomes in a female laboratory rat is described. The phenotype was normal. The new chromosome is submetacentric. Other animals of the same group showed such new chromosomes only sporadically. No information is available of chromosome mosaic, fertility or genetics of this animal.

Summary Intravenous administration of iodoacetate (20 mg/kg) produces in cats a transient miosis. This is shown to be a reflex constriction elicited by an excitatory action of iodoacetate on the retina.

Résumé Nous avons mesuré l'activité des phosphatases acide et alcaline au cours de la croissance et de la métamorphose deT. confusum. L'activité de la phosphatase acide est à son maximum au cours de l'embryogénèse et du stade larvaire. Il est donc possible que cette enzyme soit reliée aux phénomènes de la différentiation cellulaire et de la croissance. L'activité de la phosphatase alcaline est, au contraire, très élevée au cours de la croissance larvaire. Elle serait donc associée à la croissance seule.

Summary The same periodical structure of the so-called primary granum, as found inChlorophytum, Aspidistra and other monocotyledons, is shown to be present in a dicotyledon also. There must exist a causal connection between that lattice and the development of the lamellar strom-grana pattern, as was first suggested byLeyon.

Schutzwirkung von polysaccharidartigen Fraktionen bakterieller Herkunft bei einer experimentellen Virusinfektion

Summary A polysaccharide like substance derived from cultivated bacteria is shown to exert a protective effect in mice infected with SK.-Col. Encephalomyelitis. The effect is optimally produced when the substance is applied previous to the infection. Certain changes in sera treated with the substance are observed involving normal virucidal factors of the sera.

Summary The cytostatic action of human blood serum, following intravenous injection of cyclophosphamid, on cell proliferation and lactic production of Ehrlich mouse ascites tumour cells in vitro was tested. The maximum cytostatic activity was found 2 h after injection.

Summary Stimulated muscles of the rat diaphragm still contract up to 180 sec if they are suspended in a solution containing 137 mM potassium chloride. Contractions in high [Ca]_e are inhibited later than in a lower concentration. The directly stimulated preparations are inhibited later than those stimulated indirectly.
