Effect of photoperiod and all-female grouping on the estrous cycle of the bandicoot rat,Bandicota bengalensis

Summary Female bandicoot rats showing irregular cycles in 12L12D, were exposed to light-darkness cycles of 1L23D, 4L20D and 8L16D. Significant regularization of the estrous cycle was observed in 8L16D with most of the rats exhibiting a regular 3-day cycle and the regularity was further enhanced by all-female grouping (4/cage).     

Synthesis and pharmacological properties of [1-N4-dimethyl-asparagine]-angiotensin II

Summary [1-N⁴-Dimethyl-asparagine]-angiotensin II was synthesized by Merrifield's solid-phase procedure. The analogue gave rat blood pressure about 70% relative potency to Hypertensin (Ciba). Defensive steroids from a carrion beetle (Silpha americana)

Summary The defensive anal effluent discharged bySilpha americana in response to disturbance contains a mixture of steroids stemming from a glandular annex of the rectum. The compounds have been characterized as 15-hydroxyprogesterone (1, principal component), 5-pregnan-15-ol-3, 20-dione (2), 5-pregnan-3, 15-diol-20-one (3), 5-pregnan-7, 15-diol-3,20-dione (4), 5-pregnan-3, 7, 15-triol-20-one (5), 5-pregnan-16-ol-3,20-dione (6), and 5-pregnan-3, 16-diol-20-one (7), none previously found in insects. Bioassays with jumping spiders showed compounds1 and6 to be feeding deterrents at the 1 g level.Paper No. 78 of the series: Defense Mechanisms of Arthropods. Fever produced in rabbits by N6, O2′-dibutyryl adenosine 3′, 5′-cyclic monophosphate

Zusammenfassung Die Injektion von N⁶-2-O-Dibutyryl-adenosin-3 5-monophosphat in den lateralen Hirnventrikel von Kaninchen führt zu einer langanhaltenden Fieberreaktion, was vermuten lässt, dass zyklisches Adenosin-35-monophosphat als weiterer Mediator in der Genese des Fiebers fungiert.     

A new synthetic method of coumestan derivatives

Zusammenfassung Die Synthese von 7-Hydroxy-5,6-dimethoxybenzofurano[3,2:3,4]coumarin aus 7,2-Dihydroxy-oder 7-Benzyloxy-2-hydroxy-4,5-dimethoxyisoflavon wird beschrieben.     

Changes in the activities of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice due to ethanol,caffeine, or phenobarbital administration

Summary Decreased activities of both the inhibitory modulator of adenosine 35-monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) as well as the stimulatory modulator of guanosine 35-monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase (G-PK) from the mouse cerebellum were noted due to the administration of excessive doses of ethanol, caffeine, and phenobarbital for up to 28 days. The dose-dependence of the inhibition of A-PK or the stimulation of G-PK was observed as a function of the amount of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice receiving different doses of ethanol.Acknowledgments. Effect of urochordamines on larval metamorphosis of ascidians

Two pteridine-containing bromophysostigmine alkaloids, urochordamine A and B, which were isolated from ascidians as larval metamorphosis promoters, were converted to more polar compounds, urochordamine A and B, respectively, when left standing in protic solvents. These four compounds promoted larval metamorphosis of the ascidianHalocynthia roretzi in the order A>A>B>B, and induced metamorphosis of the pediveliger larvae of the musselMytilus edulis galloprovincialis.

Synthesis of oxytocin: Suppression of dimer formation

Zusammenfassung Die Bildung von Oxytocin-Dimer (+), einem Nebenprodukt der Oxytocin-Synthese, wird verringert durch Ausschluss atmosphärischen Sauerstoffes während der Zyklisation von Oxytocein zu Oxytocin. Das Gleichgewichtsverhältnis von Monomer zu Dimer wird durchschnittlich von 41 auf 111 verbessert.
