Depletion of synaptic vesicles at the frog (Rana pipiens) neuromuscular junctions by tetraphenylboron

Summary At the frog neuromuscular junction tetraphenylboron produced a decrease in miniature endplate potential amplitude, accompanied by a decrease in the number but not the size of synaptic vesicles.This work was supported by NIH Grants Nos NS-07740 and NS-05707 to R. Morphometric study of the aortic body types I cell

Summary The subclavian glomus (aortic body) of New Zealand white rabbits was examined ultrastructurally using stereological morphometric analysis. The Type I cells of the glomus possess numerous electron-opaque vesicles which occupy approximately 12% of the cytoplasmic volume of the cells. The amine-containing vesicles comprise a heterogeneous population of vesicles with a mean caliper diameter of 113.5 nm. Differences in vesicle diameters may indicate the storage of different biogenic amines, different secretion or maturation states between glomera and/or additional physiological functions for the glomera.Supported by NIH Grant 5-TO1-GM793 and The University of Texas.     

Electrical activity of the pectoral muscles during gliding and flapping flight in the herring gull (Larus argentatus)

Summary Electromyographic recording from the pectoral muscles of the herring gull during flight showed that very little muscle activity is associated with gliding flight. However, the integrated gliding potentials could be increased very considerably by loading the bird. The muscle activity during gliding and flapping flight are in accordance with the known energy requirements for these 2 types of flight.This work was supported by NIH Research Grant HL-02228 and NIH Research Career Award 1-K6-GM-21, 522 to Prof. Schmidt-Nielsen. Lack of distant relationships between lysozyme Ch and hen egg white lysozyme: computer comparison studies

Summary A computer search, made for distant relationships between lysozyme Ch, hen egg white lysozyme, and bacteriophage T4 lysozyme, revealed no unusual similarities in their amino acid sequences. Also, antibodies generated against lysozyme Ch failed to cross react with hen egg white lysozyme and vice versa. These lysozymes most likely represent examples of convergent evolution.Acknowledgments. Effect of diethylstilboesterol diphosphate on tumour-associated immunity in prostatic cancer. A preliminary report

Summary In continuing studies of the effects of oestrogen on immunologic responsiveness, preliminary evidence of significant suppression of tumour-associated immunity in patients with prostatic cancer has been observed.Supported in part by National Institutes of Health General Research Support Grant RR05524-13 to the Hektoen Institute for Medical Research.     

Elevated kidney glucosyltransferase activity in genetic prediabetic mice

Summary Glucosyltransferase activity in the renal cortex of genetic diabetic KK mice was significantly increased at 40 days of age when compared to that of Swiss albino and F₁ hybrid mice. This increase in enzyme activity in the absence of glucose intolerance can be regarded as an earlier genetic marker for the diagnosis of diabetic microangiopathy.Acknowledgments. Visual pigment regeneration: Occurrence in frog retina upside down upon the pigment epithelium

Summary Visual pigment regeneration in the frog requires apposition between the retina and retinal pigment epithelium. However, regeneration occurs nearly as well with the retina upside down (i.e. with the inner limiting membrane facing the pigment epithelium) as right side up.Acknowledgments. Brain catecholamines and organ weight of mice genetically selected for high and low blood pressure

Summary Statistically significant differences were found between the high and low genetically selected blood pressure lines for systolic blood pressure, norepinephrine content of whole brain, absolute heart weight, heart to b. wt ratio, kidney weight, kidney to b. wt ratio, and adrenal to b. wt ratio.This research was supported in part by an allocation from the General Research Fund of the University of Kansas and the Biomedical Sciences Support Grant RR-07037.

The fiber spectrum of the cat VI nerve to the lateral rectus and retractor bulbi muscles

Zusammenfassung Das Faserspektrum des VI Hirnnerven der Katze wurde an 3 Stellen bestimmt: Austrittsstelle aus dem Pons, Verzweigungsstelle zum M. rectus lateralis und zum M. retractor bulbi. Wenigstens 3 verschiedene Typen motorischer Fasern wurden ermittelt: 1. grosse, dick myelinisierte, 2. kleine, dünn myelinisierte, 3. kleine, dick myelinisierte. Die Verzweigungsstelle zum M. retractor bulbi besteht hauptsächlich aus dem 1. Fasertyp.

Adenosine deaminase activity in peripheral blood cells from SJL/J mice

Summary Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities were measured in peripheral blood cells of SJL/J mice, and compared with those of C57BL/6J animals. No association was observed between the levels of lymphocyte or erythrocyte ADA and immunologic abnormalities in SJL/J mice nor was evidence obtained to suggest a relationship between ADA activity and tumorigenesis in this strain.This work was supported in part by a University College Faculty Research Grant.     

Histochemical demonstration of reductase activity in the nucleus of chicken erythrocyte

Zusammenfassung Dehydrase- und Succinodehydraseaktivität werden mittels histochemischer Methode durch Tetrazoliumsalze in Kernen der Hühnererythrocyten dargestellt. Das Vorhandensein der Formazankristalle beschränkt sich vor allem auf die innere Oberfläche der Kernmembrane. Die Bedeutung dieser Entdeckungen im Zusammenhang mit dem Succinodehydrase-Mitochondrien-Verhältnis wird kurz besprochen.

Immunological sensitization following inapparent infection with dengue virus type 3 in rhesus monkeys

Summary Rhesus monkeys previously given dengue virus type 3, without apparent viremia or antibody response, exhibited a secondary-type response upon reinoculation. Specific inhibition of human leukocyte elastase by substituted alpha-pyrones

Summary Severala-pyrones have been synthesized and investigated for their in vitro inhibitory activity usinga-chymotrypsin (a-CT), porcine pancreatic elastase, (PPE) and human leukocyte elastase (HLE). 4-Hydroxy-6-undecyl-2H-pyran-2-one4, 4-Hydroxy-6-[(1-butyl)heptyl]-2H-pyran-2-one5 and 4-Methoxy-6-[(1-butyl)heptyl]-2H-pyran-2-one6 were found to be specific inhibitors of HLE. These compounds constitute a promising new class of HLE inhibitors.Acknowledgments. Hybridization in the mexican and 13-lined ground squirrels,Spermophilus mexicanus andSpermophilus tridecemlineatus

Summary Evidence of hybridization between the ground squirrels,Spermophilus tridecemlineatus andS. mexicanus is presented on the basis of chromosomal and protein data. The hybrids produced appear to be completely interfertile. Based on the evidence of hybridization and the recent reestablishment of contact between these two species, they are considered to be semispecies.Supported by Faculty Research Grant No. 34925 from North Texas State University awarded toZimmerman.
