Department Director’s Fund for Earthquake Relief

The NSFC-JST Workshop on Environment Conservation and Restoration Using Bioremediation Function/Technology was successfully held in Xi＇an from June 24 to 25, 2008. Prof. He Minghong, Vice President of NSFC, and Mr. Fumiaki Takahashi, Executive Director of JST, headed delegations respectively to attend the workshop and delivered speeches at the workshop. About 30 scientists from Japan and China as well as the representatives from both funding agencies joined the meeting.     

Concerns Go to Disaster's Impact on Economy and Emergency Response

On May 12,2008,NSFC's Department of Management Sciences held a meeting to initiate a program on Disaster Impact on China's Economy and the Emergency Response.Nine research groups were granted in this program through the Department Director's Fund.     

Long-Range Topological Order in Metallic Glass

In June 17th issue of Science,Professor Jiang Jianzhong of Department of Material Sciences,Zhejiang University and his colleagues published a paper titled "Long-Range Topological Order in Metallic Glass". Prof.Jiang has received sustained support from NSFC since 2003. This article was co-authored by an international group of 9 researchers. According to the article,glass lacks the long-range periodic order that characterizes a crystal.In the Ce75Al25 metallic glass(MG),however,they discovered a long-range topological order corresponding to a single crystal of indefinite length.Structural examinations confirm that the MG is truly amorphous,isotropic, and unstrained,yet under 25 gigapascals hydrostatic pressures,every segment of a centimeter-     

Vice President Shen Wenqing Met with ANR President

On November 19, 2008, Prof. Shen Wenqing, NSFC Vice President, met with Dr. Jacques Stern, the visiting President of the French National Research Agency （ANR）. The Attendees from NSFC were Mr. Zhang Zhaotian, Deputy Director-general, and Mr. Liu Ke, Director of Division from the Department of Information Sciences, and Mr. Lu Rongkai, Director of Division of the Bureau of International. The meeting was followed by a lunch at NSFC.     

NSFC Strengthens its Funding in Wenchuan

NSFC Earth Sciences Department is about to approve two Director＇s Fund projects to provide better scientific support to the rescue and relief efforts and collect first-hand data with major scientific significance in post-earthquake Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province. One project is on the relation between the stress field of post-earthquake （M=8.0） deformation and the strong aftershocks in Wenchuan County and the other is on the field investigation and studies on geological hazards and secondary disasters of blocking up river caused by earthquake in the County.     

Vice President Shen Wenqing Met with US Science Dean Delegation

NSFC Vice President Prof. Shen Wenqing met with an US science dean delegation on 21 October, 2008. Prof. Shen briefed the delegation on NSFC＇s profile of international cooperation with the United States, followed by discussions on how to better develop China-US collaboration in science and technology and how to encourage US students to do research in China. Dr. Alex DeAngelis, the new Director of NSF Beijing Office, joined the delegation. NSFC staff from the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Bureau of International Cooperation attended the meeting.     

Spin Configuration and Superexchange Mechanism in Molecular Magnets Observed

Jointly supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology and Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ma Xucun＇s group in CAS Institute of Physics and Condensed Matter Physics National I.ab, in cooperation with Xue Qikun＇s research team in the Department of Physics of Tsinghua University, studied the super exchange mechanism in cobalt phthalocyanine （CoPc） thin films by using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. With high energy-resolution spin-flip associated inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, they explicitly identified the specific molecular orbitals that mediate the super exchange interaction between molecules.     

The First Sino-Thailand Joint Workshop for Natural Products and Drug Discovery Held in Chengdu

The First Sino-Thailand Joint Workshop for Natural Products and Drug Discovery was successfully held in Chengdu from September 16 to 19, 2008. This is the first workshop jointly organized by NSFC and Thailand Research Fund （TRF） under the MOU between the two funding agencies. NSFC Delegation Visits Northern European Countries

A NSFC delegation headed by Prof. Li Zhuqi, Vice President, paid a visit to Northern Europe from August 19 to August 31, 2003. The delegation visited the Research Council of Norway, the Academy of Finland, the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning, some international organizations, universities and research institutes.

瑞典皇家科学院将2010 年诺贝尔化学奖授予美国和日本的3 位科学家理查德·海克(Richard F. Heck)、根岸英一(Ei-ichi Negishi)和铃木章(Akira Suzuki), 以表彰他们在“有机合成中钯催化交叉偶联反应”方面所做出的杰出贡献. 他们的研究成果极大地促进了有机合成化学的发展, 广泛应用于合成制备具有特殊光电功能的高性能有机电子材料、具有复杂结构的天然产物和生物活性化合物以及一些精细化学品, 对学术界和工业界产生了重要影响. 本文简要介绍了Heck 反应、Negishi 反应和Suzuki-Miyaura 反应的基本知识, 并讨论了其发展和应用概况.     

New Method for Early Cancer Diagnosis

The NSFC funded Key Program project ＂A real-time analysis of the early diagnosis of cancer markers＂, undertaken by Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS）, recently received recognition from an expert team for assessment. Experts pointed out that the research was of great value for the fast ascertain of cancer markers and the early warning and diagnosis. The research team was headed by Academician Wang Erkang, CAS and Prof. Kong Jilie, Fudan University.
