Multiple spots on paper chromatograms

Zusammenfassung Bei der papierchromatographischen Prüfung bestimmter reiner Stoffe wurde die Bildung mehrerer Flecken beobachtet. Derartige ?ghost?-Flecken entstehen mit gewissen herzaktiven Glykosiden und auch mit dem Antibiotikum Monamycin.      

Influence of oxygen concentration on development ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary 1st, 2nd, and early 3rd instarDrosophila larvae are extremely sensitive to 100% O₂ or 75% O₂/25% N₂ (at atmospheric pressure) whereas eggs, late 3rd instar larvae, and pupae are relatively insensitive under our exposure conditions. Eclosing flies exposed to an O₂ enriched environment consistently possessed 2 eye abnormalities: dark eye color and altered eye shape.Supported by NSF-URP grant SP1782684 and a Summer Faculty Fellowship to Harry Nickla.     

Properties of the larval hemocytes ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary Contrary to Srdi and Gloor's report, we find crystal cells (cc) in the lymph glands ofD. melanogaster larvae; the size and number of inclusions in the cc cannot be used to distinguish the 2 sibling species,D. melanogaster andD. simulans; cc in the hemocoel are not phagocytic cells; the surface properties of the lamellocytes are consistent with their derivation from plasmatocytes and not cc.Supported by grant No. CA16619 awarded by the National Cancer Institute, DHEW, USPHS.     

Behaviour ofDrosophila melanogaster is affected by drugs

Summary Reserpine, colchicine and Rb⁺ ions exerted specific effects on sexual behaviour and locomotor activity of the fruit fly. Neuroleptics and antidepressants were inactive.     

Kynurenine localization in the egg ofDrosophila melanogaster

Zusammenfassung Papierchromatographische und fluoreszensmikroskopische Untesuchungen von Ovarien der Wildtypen und der Vermilion- und Cinnabar-Mutanten vonDrosophila zeigen, dass sich Kynurenin (der Hauptbestandteil der fluoreszierenden Komponente des Eies) in den proteinhaltigen Dotterschollen des reifenden und des reifen Eies befindet.

Superoxide dismutase and life span ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary Comparison of superoxide dismutase activity in homogenates of wild and vestigial strains ofD. melanogaster revealed a lower enzyme activity in the short-living vestigial strain.Acknowledgments. Frequency-dependent mating success among mutant ebony ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary Measurements of the mating success of wild and ebony strains ofD. melanogaster with different degrees of competition have shown a frequency-dependent effect in both cases, but with a negative correlation for the wild and a positive correlation for the ebony strain.Supported by FAPESP Grant No. 70/049.     

Preadult lethality in four populations ofDrosophila melanogaster treated with formaldehyde

Summary Samples from 4 populations ofD. melanogaster were treated with formaldehyde by the larval feeding method, and induced lethality was scored. The results showed relevant differences among the populations analyzed.     

Studies of selective mating using the melanistic mutants ofDrosophila melanogaster

Résumé L'observation directe a montré qu'il n'y a pas d'isolement sexuel entre le typesauvage et les mutants mélaniquesebony etblack deDrosophila melanogaster, mais il existe de notables différences entre l'activité sexuelle et motrice des mâles des trois génotypes. L'importance sélective de ces différences est soulignée.     

Genotypical differences between stocks ofDrosophila melanogaster revealed from culturingin vitro

Riassunto Sono stati coltivati in identica condizione gangli nervosi e ghiandole della linfa di diversi ceppi diDrosophila, differenti genotipicamente. Si sono notate diverse peculiarità di comportamento che — sebbene in parte forse artefatti — denotano l'esistenza di differenze fra il fenotipo, che risulta così analizzato a livello cellulare. Il metodo sembra adatto a ulteriori analisi del fenotipo, in rapporto a genotipi diversi.

An attachment for the measurement of the absorption spectra on paper chromatograms

Zusammenfassung Mit der Hilfe eines neuen Zusatzinstruments zum Beckman-Quarz-Spektrophotometer ist es möglich, die Absorptionsspektra isolierter Substanzen auf Papierchromatogrammen zu messen. Ferner erlaubt das Instrument die Bestimmung der Rf-Werte nach der Methode vonTennent und Mitarbeitern.     

Crystal cell pattern modification in a melanotic tumor strain ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary 3rd instar larvae of the melanotic tumortu-pb strain ofDrosophila melanogaster hold a lower number of free-circulating crystal cells in their hemolymph than the wild type ones. This pattern could result from an abnormal retention of mature crystal cells in the hematopoietic organs, as the strong hemocyte melanization inside the lymph glands of heat-treatedtu-pb larvae seems to demonstrate. Melanotic tumor formation and modification of the crystal cell pattern may be related.
