No association between Gilbert's syndrome,the AB0 blood groups and the haptoglobin phenotypes

Summary The different AB0 blood groups and haptoglobin phenotypes are as frequent in a well-defined group of subjects with Gilbert's syndrome as in appropriate samples of the general population.Acknowledgments. Les glycoprotéines sériques dans le granulome expérimental provoqué par la carrageenine

Summary We studied serum glycoproteins in rats and guinea pigs during the development of granulomas, provoked by carrageenin injection. In rats total serum sialic acid was raised as well as sialic acid soluble in sulfosalicylic acid and haptoglobin. The rise of these 2 fractions, seromucoid and haptoglobine accounts quantitatively for the rise of the total sialic acid. In guinea pigs total serum sialic acid was unchanged, but sulfosalicylosoluble sialic acid as well as haptoglobin were much higher than basal values. Quantitatively the serum glycoprotein reaction was much higher in rats than in guinea pigs.

Summary More frequent occurrence of the homozygote haptoglobin type 1-1 was found in patients with liver cirrhosis in comparison with its frequency in the healthy population of Prague.     

Changes of the level of proteinase inhibitors in rat plasma during turpentine-induced inflammation

The levels of rat plasma alpha-macroglobulins, alpha-cysteine proteinase inhibitor, haptoglobin and antipapain activity were studied during the acute-phase reaction after an injection of alpha-pinen. An increase in concentration of all the compounds examined was observed.     

Histamine deficiency suppresses murine haptoglobin production and modifies hepatic protein tyrosine phosphorylation

Histidine decarboxylase (HDC) synthesizes endogenous histamine from histidine in mammals. HDC- deficient mice (HDC-/-), if kept on a histamine-free diet, have no histamine in their tissues. HDC-/- mice show multiple phenotypes. In this study we show that both the constitutively expressed and turpentine-induced level of an acute-phase protein, haptoglobin, is significantly lower in the serum of HDC-/- mice compared to that of wild-type animals. This effect was abolished if HDC gene-targeted mice received histamine-rich food. No differences were found when lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to induce the acute-phase reaction. Using specific antibodies to phosphorylated tyrosine, we showed that protein tyrosine phosphorylation (Y-P) of ~50- and 26- to 27-kDa liver proteins is significantly decreased in HDC-/- mice, but that the difference was largely diminished if the animals were kept on a histamine-rich diet, suggesting that the phenotype with lower haptoglobin production is diet inducible. Upon in vivo treatment with LPS, Y-P band intensity decreased, regardless of the presence or absence of histamine. Identification of elements of the signalling pathway with decreased phosphorylation may elucidate the molecular background of the effect of endogenous histamine in the hepatic acute-phase reaction. Hemoglobin binding capacity of heat incubated sera of different haptoglobin subtypes

Summary Sera of haptoglobin subtypes Hp 1F-1F and Hp 1S-1S incubated at 56°C show a different degree of reduction in the hemoglobin binding capacity. The difference is small but significant.

本文介绍了三种化学发光成像法在人血清结合珠蛋白分型电泳的快速检测方面的应用。这三种方法都是基于鲁米诺一过氧化氢发光体系。使用免疫化学发光成像法，直接化学发光成像法和增强化学发光成像法，能够提高对结合珠蛋白检测的灵敏度，获得更宽的线性范围。我们使用这三种方法完成了对结合珠蛋白的快速、高灵敏、高选择性的检测。     

Die Verteilung der genetisch bedingten Haptoglobintypen bei Geschwulstkrankheiten

Summary The distribution of haptoglobin types is different in the two groups of 41 benign and 25 malignant tumours. In the group of benign tumours, the rate of Hp_2–2 exceeds the normal distribution rate. With the -quadrat method, these changes proved to be significant.

Affinity chromatography of human serum proteins using matrix bound lectin fromViscum album L.

Summary The D-galactose specific lectin fromViscum album L. reacts with serum proteins that contain the corresponding D-galactopyranosyl residues. By affinity chromatography of human serum on lectin-sepharose IgM, ₂-macroglobulin, haptoglobin and -lipoprotein were quantitatively retained. Only parts of IgA, IgG and transferrin were retarded. The other serum proteins are unbounded as albumin, ₁A– and ₁C.     

Sur l'interaction de la Protamine avec des protéines sériques

Summary We noticed the formation of a precipitate on adding salmine to dilute aqueous protein solution at pH 6–7. Human and bovine serum albumin, human -globulin, and the perchloro- and sulfosalicylosoluble mucoides do not precipitate in this condition. - and -lipoproteins prepared by floatation and by Sandor's technique gave S-shaped nephelometric titration curves, as did haptoglobin, a mixture of the types Hp II-Hp II and Hp II-Hp I. In sera incubated 24 h at 37°C with protamin, the dextran sulphate test and the cetavlon test show a diminished value for -lipo- and -glucoprotein. Lipoprotein degradation is probably enzymatic in nature.     

A cautionary note on pentacyanoammonioferrate use for determining L-canavanine occurrence in biological materials

Summary Caution must be taken in the prevelant use of the pentacyanoammonioferrate reagent for the detection of L-canavanine in biological materias. This reagent reacts with L-histidine at neutral pH to form a pentacyanoammonioferate-histidine complex that is mistaken readily for its canavanine-containing counterpart.This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (PCM-78-20167). Cortisol and immune interferon can interact in the modulation of human natural killer cell activity

This paper reports that cortisol at physiological concentrations minimizes the enhancement of human natural killer (NK) cell activity in vitro by immune interferon (IFN-gamma). This effect may be important for the regulation of NK cytotoxicity in vivo.     

Synthesis of N-aryl-N-glycolyl hydroxamic acids: Nonmicrosomal metabolites of nitrosoaromatics

Summary A method for the synthesis of N-aryl-N-glycolyl hydroxamic acids is described. This method consists of N-acylation of an arylhydroxylamine by glycolic acid in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide.This study was supported by grant No. CA 21668 from the National Cancer Institute, DHEW.     

A rapid electrophoretic method for the separation of hydroxyproline from proline

Summary A rapid, sensitive procedure is described which uses custom made apparatus to separate radioactive imino acids. This technique provides a simple measurement of the distribution of newly synthesized collagen in different fractions.Acknowledgment. Damage by ozone to the mechanical integrity of the protoplast plasmalemma

Summary Ozone acts on the plasmalemma as to weaken its mechanical properties. This results in the bursting of protoplasts.This work was carried ont with the help of a grant by the FCAC, Ministère de l'Education du Québec, Canada.     

Karyological conservatism in South American camelids

Summary Llama, guanaco, vicuna and alpaca show similar diploid numbers, gross chromosomal morphology and homologous G, C and NOR banding patterns. This chromosomal homology is also found in the two-humped camel and very probably in the one-humped camel as well. These findings indicate that the camelid karyotype can probably be traced back to early Miocene times. This probably represents the most extreme case of chromosomal conservatism among mammals.This work was supported by grants from the Organization of American States and SECYT.Acknowledgments. A technical improvement in the radioimmunoassay of cyclic-AMP.

An improvement in the technique for the radioimmunoassay of cyclic-AMP, wherein ammonium sulfate precipitation is replaced with zirconyl phosphate gel, is presented. This substitution produces a more stable pellet than that obtained with ammonium sulfate. This greatly reduces a potential source of error due to pellet instability.     

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase assay on polyacrylamide gels

Summary A simple technique to identify, PEP carboxylase on polyacrylamide gels is described. This method involves in the formation of white ring of calcium phosphate precipitate on the reaction site, revealing the presence of enzyme protein.This work was supported by PL-480 (USDA), project FG-IN-526.
