The adenylate cyclase activator forskolin and its pharmacologically inactive derivative 1,9-dideoxyforskolin were found to inhibit in a dose-dependent fashion the ecdysone 20-monooxygenase activity associated with wandering stage larvae of Drosophila melanogaster and fat body and midgut from last instar larvae of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta. The concentrations of these labdane diterpenes required to elicit a 50% inhibition of the cytochrome P-450 dependent steroid hydroxylase activity in the insect tissues ranged from approximately 5 x 10(-6) to 5 x 10(-4) M.  相似文献

Summary Duration of the feeding stage and corresponding weight increase during the last larval instar of the codling moth,Laspeyresia pomonella, are controlled by JH. Larvae reared under short day conditions have a relatively high titer of JH during the last larval instar and enter diapause as mature larvae. They feed longer and become heavier than larvae reared under long day conditions, which have no JH during the last larval instar and pupate when mature. By application of the JH mimetic Altosid® during the first 2 or 3 days of the last larval instar, the duration of feeding activity of larvae reared under respectively long and short day conditions was prolongated and the larvae became significantly heavier. The feeding behaviour could only be influenced by the juvenoid as long as the feeding activity of the larvae had not yet ceased.  相似文献

Summary The effect of a juvenile hormone mimetic, fenoxycarb, Ro 13-5223, was tested on the larval instars of the European corn borer,Ostrinia nubilalis, by dipping or topical application. When larvae were treated in instars 2, 3 or 4, the duration of the fifth instar was modified. More permanent and fewer supernumerary larvae were obtained when treatment occurred in the early instars. This non-neurotoxic compound exhibited a strong dose-dependent juvenile hormone type of activity when it was applied to last instar larvae. Fenoxycarb prevented the onset of pupation and produced supernumerary larvae and intermediates. Permanent larvae were obtained if fenoxycarb was applied on day 0 or day 1 of the last instar. The use of such a JH mimetic in the understanding of endocrine control of diapause is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The pH for the optimum activity of the midgut invertase was 5.5 in the adults ofS. ruficornis, 6.0 in its larvae and adults ofM. domestica and 6.5 in the larvae of the latter fly. Summary The prothoracic glands of permanent fifth instar larvae ofLocusta migratoria (moulting blocked by selective X-ray treatment of the hemocytopoietic tissue) are in a state of high activity as evidenced by the rate of incorporation of a labelled amino-acid into the proteins synthesized in these glands. In moulting individuals, proctolin caused a decrease in brain adenylate cyclase activity, and it proved to be ineffective in the larvae. The response of the final instar larvae ofG. mellonella to topical application of the non-steroidal ecdysone mimic, RH 5849, was age-related as well as dose-dependent. In young final instar larvae, moderate doses of RH 5849 induced perfect supernumerary larval moults, but doses equal to and higher than 8.5 μg per larva caused premature formation of larval cuticle and were lethal. Application of RH 5849 significantly increased allatotropic activity of the brain, and also activated synthesis of juvenile hormone (JH) by the corpora cardiaca/corpora allata complex. Simultaneous application of RH 5849 and FMev, a potent inhibitor of JH synthesis, to young final instar larvae lowered the incidence of perfect supernumerary larval moults. We conclude that the effect of RH 5849 on the developmental programme inG. mellonella is mediated by the corpora allata.  相似文献

Summary The regional distribution of catalase activity has been determined in three sections of the tails of fed and starving Xenopulsarvae during a period of 27 days. The method ofFeinstein, using perborate as substrate, was adapted to work on a microscale. Catalase activity was highest in the tip and decreased towards the base of the tail. During the experiment, catalase activity increased markedly in the tips of the tails of the fed larvae, whereas there were only slight changes of activity in the tails of the starving larvae.

Summary Manduca sexta larvae were subjected to diapause-inducing and diapause-preventing photoperiods, using two types of fluorescents (Indorsun and Blacklight-blue). The oenocytes, prothoracic glands (PTG) and ecdysone levels were examined in 3-day-old 5th instar larvae, 2-day-old and 10-day-old pupae. Our results indicate that oenocytes and PTG cells tend to be more active under long photoperiods while oenocytes only are active under short photoperiods in pupae in diapause. UV light has a definite effect on oenocytes while PTG cells seem to be unaffected. Ecdysone and ecdysterone levels vary with PTG and oenocyte activity at the pupal stage. Summary The development of Reissner's fibre (RF) by secretory activity of the flexural and subcommissural organ was studied in early ontogenetical stages ofTriturus alpestris. In young stages RF arises from the flexural organ, which gradually reduces its secretory activity in the following stages. Now the secretion of the subcommissural organ becomes predominant and begins to form the RF. After the hatching of larvae, only the subcommissural organ produces the RF.  相似文献

Summary High activity of the enzyme, xanthindehydrogenase, was detected in larval fat-body of wild typeDrosophila melanogaster. The Malpighian tubules of both larvae and adults exhibit activity, too, though rather little. No activity was detected in larval testes, while probably insignificant traces were found in adult testes. The results are discussed with regard to non-autonomy of mutants deficient in the enzyme.

Changes in non-specific esterases of Aedes aegypti were noted during pupal development. One esterase band was found to increase markedly within 3 h of pupation and this increase in activity was suppressed by prior treatment of larvae with an insect growth regulator, ZR 515. It is suggested that the esterase activity may help to reduce endogenous levels of juvenile hormone during metamorphosis and that the growth regulator may prevent this normal regulation.  相似文献

Summary When fluoride-ions or monoiodoacetate is added to the ambient medium, there occur in fish larvae after 12 h, and in eels after 24 h, in some places, solid epidermal proliferations. Summary A single 4th instar larva ofAnopheles pharoensis could consume within 24 h an average number of 5.3–11.6 larvae of the 1st instar. The number consumed differed according to crowdedness and the presence of other mature larvae. Dissection of the midgut of these larvae revealed the presence of various undigested parts of young larvae.Acknowledgments.
