Surface morphology of the subfornical organ: effects of low and high sodium chloride diet

Ependymal cells found in the subfornical organ of the rat were counted. Cells covered by small microvilli, small protrusions and smooth cells were frequently found. Also present were cells with long or short cilia, cels with large protrusions and supraependymal cells. High and low sodium diets reduced the number of cells with large protrusions. Microvilli-covered cells increased after a low sodium diet.     

Nuclear protrusions in malignant tumours with large abnormal chromosomes: Observations on C-banded preparations

Summary The appearances are described in 4 human tumours having nuclear protrusions associated with large abnormal chromosomes. In C-banded preparations, chromocentres were seen in the protrusions only where interstitial C-bands were present on the long arm of the abnormal chromosome, providing evidence that the protrusions are indeed formed by the long arms.This work was supported by a grant from the Cancer Research Campaign.

Résumé Le cur de grenouille continue à battre de lui-même et répond à une stimulation électrique durant 5–6 h s'il reçoit une injection contenant une demi solution isotonique de saccharose, de pyrophosphate de sodium et d'adénosinetriphosphate ou de citrate de sodium. Le chloride de sodium annule ces deux réactions.     

Influence of dormancy on the chemical composition ofStrophocheilus (Strophocheilidae,Pulmonata, Mollusca)

Résumé Pendant l'hibernation, leStrophocheilus (Pulmoné, Mollusque) perd de l'eau, du sodium, du calciun, du magnésium, du soufre, du cuivre, du fer et des carbohydrates totaux, mais son taux de potassium et d'iode augmente. En état d'estivation, il y en a perte d'eau, de sodium, de magnésium, de cuivre, de fer et de carbohydrates totaux, mais accumulation de calcium.     

The binding of some sodium substitutes to chondroitin sulfate

Résumé Il arrive souvent que l'on doive substituer l'ion de sodium dans les solutions physiologiques. Un effet particulier en est la compétition du substitut vis-à-vis les ions de sodium liés au sulfate de chondroitine. Nous démontrons que le sucrose ne déplace pas cette portion du sodium lié, alors que les ions de lithium et de choline possèdent une grande affinité pour ces sites de liaison, affinité moindre cependant que celle de l'ion de calcium. Les conséquences physiologiques qui en ressortent sont discutées.     

Modification by calcium dobesilate of histamine effects on capillary ultrastructure.

The ultrastructure of blood capillaries and venules are studied in rat skin. After i.v. injection of histamine the luminal surface of the endothelial cells show protrusions of variable size. Numerous gaps have been found in the capillary wall, specially in the venules. These alterations are not observed in the animals that were treated with calcium dobesilate before the administration of histamine. In these cases the capillary structure are indistinguishable of the controls. The possible effects of the histamine and calcium dobesilate on the cell coat and cell junctions of the endothelial capillary cells are discussed.     

Renal and pressor actions of angiotensin in salt loaded and depleted rabbits

Résumé Chez les lapins auxquels on a administré du sel, l'angiotensine en doses de 0.005-0.00005µg/kg/min a réduit l'excrétion urinaire de sodium à une quantité correspondant au logarithme de la dose, tandis que des doses inférieures à 0.005µg/kg/min n'ont eu aucun effet sur la tension artérielle. Chez les mêmes lapins lors d'une déplétion de sel, de telles doses n'ont eu aucun effet sur l'excrétion de sodium. Des doses fortes (> 0.05µg/kg/min) qui élevaient toujours la pression sanguine, provoquèrent souvent une augmentation lente de l'excrétion de sodium, beaucoup plus marquée quand l'animal était exempt de sel que lors qu'il en était pourvu. On suggère que l'angiotensine agit normalement comme une hormone qui retient le sodium, action produite par de petites quantités sans effet sur la tension artérielle.     

Routes and machinery of primary cilium biogenesis

Primary cilia are solitary, microtubule-based protrusions of the cell surface that play fundamental roles as photosensors, mechanosensors and biochemical sensors. Primary cilia dysfunction results in a long list of developmental and degenerative disorders that combine to give rise to a large spectrum of human diseases affecting almost any major body organ. Depending on the cell type, primary ciliogenesis is initiated intracellularly, as in fibroblasts, or at the cell surface, as in renal polarized epithelial cells. In this review, we have focused on the routes of primary ciliogenesis placing particular emphasis on the recently described pathway in renal polarized epithelial cells by which the midbody remnant resulting from a previous cell division event enables the centrosome for initiation of primary cilium assembly. The protein machinery implicated in primary cilium formation in epithelial cells, including the machinery best known for its involvement in establishing cell polarity and polarized membrane trafficking, is also discussed.     

Paper chromatographic separation of some phloroglucinal derivatives fromDryopteris filix mas

Résumé L'acide filicique, l'acide flavaspidique, l'albaspidine et l'acide filicinique ont pu être isolés par chromatographie sur papier, suivant la méthode ascendante, avec comme phase mobile une solution de carbonate de sodium 2N, dans laquelle on a dissous 2 g de sulfite de sodium par litre. Les spots étaient rendus visibles en pulvérisant une solution de sulfanilamide diazotée. En même temps se manifestait aussi une différence de couleur pour les dites substances phlorogluciniques.     

Giant granules in adrenaline-secreting chromaffin cells of lizard adrenal glands after metyrapone administration

Summary Secretory granules of extraordinary size, some of them bigger than the cell nucleus, abound in the adrenaline cells of lizard adrenals after metyrapone injections during 7 days. In these granules, the bounding membrane is studded with ribosomes, and the core is formed by rounded small subunits. Some granules of this type are also found in noradrenaline cells. They may represent an exceptionally increased elaboration and storage of adrenaline, induced by metyrapone probably through its action on steroidogenic tissue.This research forms part of project No. 31.26.S1-1154 supported by the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científícas y Tecnológicas.     

Voltage-clamp analysis of the sodium and potassium currents in skeletal muscle fibres treated with 4-aminopyridine

Summary External application of low concentrations of 4-aminopyridine blocks potassium currents without affecting sodium currents in pieces of single frog skeletal muscle fibres. The blockade of potassium currents was voltage-dependent, being partially relieved on depolarization.This study was supported by a grant from the Oficina técnica de Desarrollo Cientifico of the University of Chile (Project 4437-R, 1977).     

Renal tubular transport of sodium during sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate loadings in the normal dog

Résumé La réabsorption tubulaire des ions sodium, chlore et bicarbonate a été étudiée au cours de perfusions de NaCl et de NaHCO₃ chez le chien normal. 61 expériences, comportant un ensemble de 295 récoltes urinaires, ont été pratiquées sur 21 animaux.A filtration constante, la réabsorption du sodium exprimée enmM/l de filtrat glomérulaire demeure constante lorsque la natrémie est accrue par l'infusion de NaHCO₃. Elle est, au contraire, une fonction linéaire de la natrémie lorsque celle-ci est élevée par des perfusions de NaCl.Dans le premier cas, la réabsorption du sodium s'effectue par un double mécanisme: l'un, lié à la réabsorption du bicarbonate, est fixé par un Tm constant, l'autre, lié à la réabsorption du chlore, dépend de la chlorémie. Lorsque la natrémie est accrue par l'infusion de NaCl, le second mécanisme l'emporte nettement sur le premier. Il apparaît alors une relation évidente entre la natrémie (ou la chlorémie) et la quantité de sodium (ou de chlore) réabsorbée par les tubes rénaux.     

Sodium intake in goldfish

Résumé Les poissons rouges sentent le manque de sodium et, lorsqu'ils sont placés dans de l'eau contenant très peu de sodium, leur préférence pour les aliments contenant du sel est accrue.     

Place de la prolyl hydroxylase dans la synthèse du collagène de cellules KB

Summary KB cells, which synthetized collagen at a low rate, shown a prolyl hydroxylase activity at the same rate that fibroblast. The relationship between collagen synthesis and prolyl hydroxylase activity in these cells was discussed.

Monolayer culture of adult mouse hepatic cells secreting albumin and alpha fetoprotein]

Adult mouse liver cells obtained by enzymatic dispersion were maintained in primary cultures for up to 4 weeks. They retained some of the typical morphological and ultrastructural characteristics of hepatocytes. After 2 days of culture, structures similar to bile canaliculi were found and after 6 days clusters of small proliferating cells were noticed in the gaps of the monolayer formed by large well-spread hepatocytes. Almost all 3-day cultures began to secrete alphafetoprotein for about 2 weeks, whereas albumin was secreted throughout the period of culture.     

On the hepato-protective effect of selenium in carbon tetrachloride poisoning in albino rats

Résumé Les auteurs ont étudié l'effet hépatoprotecteur du sélénite de sodium administré en doses de 1 /100 g du poids corporel, avant, pendant et après l'intoxication de rats avec du tétrachloride de carbone. Ils en ont conclu que, suivant un critère anatomo-pathologique, l'effet antitoxique du sélénite de sodium est de protéger le parenchime hépatique contre l'action du tétrachloride de carbone.     

Influence de laβ-mercaptoéthylamine sur la réponse de l'intestin grêle du rat à une irradiation rœntgénienne localisée

Summary Intra-peritoneal injections of 15 mg of B-mercaptoethylamine in rats, with an average weight of 200 g, protect the small intestine against a local irradiation of 500 r on the antero-upper portion of the abdomen.This protection is proved mainly, as compared with the control, by a smaller decrease of cells still in mitosis after 12 and 24 hours and of the migrant cells in resting stage, by a greater precocity and higher quantitative value of the post-radiation normal and subnormal mitotic processes, and by variations in the mitotic formula (namely, in protected animals, a relatively high increase in the amount of metaphases).These experiments seem to prove a certain local and immediate action of the radio-protector, whose effects are not solely limited to the preparation of the generating system of the intestine for the later complete repair of the digestive epithelium.
