In normally reared Kittens (6 weeks old), all orientations encoded by visual cells in the primary visual cortex are equally represented. In Kittens of the same age, unilaterally enucleated at birth and reared in identical conditions, 70% of orientation-selective cells preferentially respond to horizontal or vertical orientations.  相似文献

Summary Recent experimental studies (since ca 1985) on the ontogeny of orientation mechanisms in migratory birds are reviewed. The processes and interactions are synthesized into a framework that may help identify critical research questions. Birds that grow up in the earth's magnetic field develop the ability to perform appropriate migratory orientation even in the absence of any experience with relevant visual cues. In two species, large changes in direction during the course of migration seem to be controlled by an endogenous time program. In one of these, the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), the correct magnetic orientation seems to occur only when the magnetic fields appropriate to the latitudes encountered en route were experienced at the proper seasonal time. The magnetic compass may be modified by visual experience with either the daytime or night sky. Celestial rotation may be the calibrating reference in this case, as it is in the development of the star compass. Young Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) learn to perform compass orientation at sunset based on polarized skylight. This compass capability seems to be calibrated by magnetic directions. Some problems of experimental design and the interpretation of results from experiments on development are discussed.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to induce neoteny inHynobius retardatus, which had been reported to propagate in larval forms like axolotl. A large number of newly hatched larvae were reared in an aqueous solution of thiourea (TU) and sodium perchlorate (SPC) in order to arrest the metamorphosis. Gonadal development in the metamophosis-arrested larvae was compared with that in normally metamorphosing and metamorphosed controls. Metamorphosis-arrested male larvae produced morphologically mature spermatozoa approximately 4 months after hatching, when the gonads in the controls began to differentiate into testes, or to show the premeiotic proliferation of germ cells. Possible endocrine controls of these phenomena are discussed.  相似文献

Summary 6 insecticides; chlordane, malathion, fenitrothion, pyrethrum, rotenone and sevin, were screened againstGryllodes sigillatus Wlk. reared under crowded and isolated conditions. Chlordane was found to be most toxic, followed by malation, fenitrothion, pyrethrum, rotenone and sevin. The pineal melatonin rhythm matured similarly under long and short days by 20 days of age. Summary Simple cells in the cat visual cortex are shown to be general purpose analyzers of visual information achieving, at the same time, minimum uncertainty in spatial localization and spatial frequency. Summary Duration of the feeding stage and corresponding weight increase during the last larval instar of the codling moth,Laspeyresia pomonella, are controlled by JH. Larvae reared under short day conditions have a relatively high titer of JH during the last larval instar and enter diapause as mature larvae. They feed longer and become heavier than larvae reared under long day conditions, which have no JH during the last larval instar and pupate when mature. By application of the JH mimetic Altosid® during the first 2 or 3 days of the last larval instar, the duration of feeding activity of larvae reared under respectively long and short day conditions was prolongated and the larvae became significantly heavier. The feeding behaviour could only be influenced by the juvenoid as long as the feeding activity of the larvae had not yet ceased.  相似文献

The colour patterns of angiosperm flowers visited by bees and hoverflies were shown to provide a dual signalling system, giving the flower-visitors visual orientation cues for the initial detection of flowers, as well as for learned discrimination. Pollinators show an innate response to interspecifically uniform colour signals, which enable them to detect flowers and to orient towards the site of reward. Interspecifically diverse colour signals provide pollinators with cues for learned discrimination between flowers of different species.  相似文献

Depletion of noradrenaline in locus coeruleus neurons after reserpinization was prevented by clorgyline, a selective inhibitor of MAO A, but not by deprenyl, a selective inhibitor of MAO B. The nucleolus organizer regions can be selectively stained in metaphase chromosome preparations by the Goodpasture and Bloom's technique which was adapted to electron microscopy analysis of cells during interphase. Using this technique, a selective accumulation of silver grains was observed over nucleolus light areas. This selective accumulation allows the identification of the interphase fibrillar centers as the nucleolus organizer regions. Ultrastructural relationships between fibrillar centers and dense fibrillar component are discussed.  相似文献

While searching for blood, female mosquitoes pass through a behavioural process involving responses to visual, physical and chemical properties of the host. Temperature and humidity are thought to dominate mosquito orientation near the host. We observed that biting of two malaria mosquito species, i.e.Anopheles atroparvus (van Thiel) andAnopheles gambiae s.s. (Giles) preferentially occurs on different body regions of a naked motionless human host. Their preference for the head and foot regions respectively correlated with particular combinations of skin temperature and eccrine sweat gland density. Subsequent modification of the host's odour profile by removing exhaled breath and washing feet results in significant changes of these preferences.  相似文献
