Quantitative investigations on the solubility of proteins extracted from tissues fixed by different chemical and physical methods

Résumé Les auteurs ont examiné l'influence de la fixation sur la solubilité des protéines. Le rein et le foie de rats blancs ont été fixés dans l'éthanol absolu, la formaline et l'acétone par lyophilisation et par la méthode de «freeze-substitution». Les protéines furent extraites par l'eau distillée et leur quantité déterminée par la microméthode deKjeldahl. Un tableau résume les résultats obtenus.     

Effect of injection of a phosphorylcholine-containing compound from Nippostrongylus brasiliensis on the infestation of the rat by this parasite]

Rats were injected intradermally with the purified phosphorycholine bearing component of the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. Eight days later they were experimentally infected with 1 X 10(3) infective larvae of the parasite. Compared to the non injected controls we showed a significant decrease in the number of adult worms able to be established in the small intestine. This protective effect seems to be due at least partly to a phenomenom being located between the skin and the lungs of the rats.     

The effects of chronic alcohol ingestion in mice on contractile properties of cardiac and skeletal muscle: a comparison with normal and dehydrated-malnourished controls.

In vitro isometric contractile tension was measured in heart and skeletal muscle in 3 groups of mice: 1. a control group, 2. a group maintained for 27 weeks on 20% alcohol, and 3. a group whose fluid intake was restricted to the extent equaling that which occurred in the alcohol treated animals. Results showed a reduction in cardiac twitch tension in both the alcohol and fluid restricted group, as compared to normal controls. We therefore consider that dehydration per se may play an important role in the etiology of alcoholic cardiomyopathy.     

Effect of insulin on the synthesis and release of lipid peroxide by cultured hepatocytes isolated from normal and diabetic rats

Summary Lipid peroxide content in hepatocytes isolated from ketotic diabetic rats was higher than normal, and the release of peroxide into the media was also elevated for the initial 18 h. Insulin suppressed both peroxide release and synthesis by cultured hepatocytes isolated from normal and from diabetic rats.

The effects of parabiotic union with a normal partner on the blood tissue of the b/b rat suffering from an inheritable anemia

Summary The parabiotic union of a b/b rat, suffering from a red blood cell anemia, with a normal partner will restore to normal the functioning of this type of blood cell. The effect of parabiotic union is evident for several weeks following the separation of the parabiotic partners. It would be logical to conclude that the normal partner supplies a factor absent in the anemic animal needed for normal functioning of the red cell.     

In vitro studies on the biosynthesis of a glycoprotein associated with normal and tumoural growth in the rat

Résumé La biosynthèse d'une glycoprotéine, isolée à partir d'une tumeur induite au 2-amino-acetylfluorène, a été étudiée in vitro, par la culture de la moëlle osseuse du rat, du poumon et du foie embryonnaire. Cette étude a été faite à l'aide d'acides aminés radioactifs dans le milieu et, subséquemment, par radio-immunoélectrophorèse. Le dosage quantitatif de la biosynthèse in vitro, par les tissus, a été fait par la méthode électrophorétique d'agarose contenant un anticorps monospécifique préparé chez la chèvre, contre la glycoprotéine pure. La spécificité de la méthode a été éprouvée en utilisant, comme contróle, l'incubation des tissus morts et en ajoutant de la puromycine dans le milieu.

Distribution of noradrenaline in the genital organs of the female rat with a remark on dopamine in the cervix and vagina

Zusammenfassung Durch Bestimmung des organeigenen Noradrenalingehalts wird die adrenergische Innervation der weiblichen Geschlechtsorgane der Ratte untersucht. Die Hauptmenge des Noradrenalins (0,3µg/g) wird im Tuba uterina gefunden, der vierfache Betrag von Uterusinhalt. Daneben wurde Dopamin in Cervix und Vagina nachgewiesen.
