A comparison between the free grafting of sliced and intact muscles in the rat

Summary Transverse slicing is a new technique whereby a mammalian muscle can be freely grafted with success. This method eliminates contamination of the early graft by surviving muscle fibres and allows one to measure the development of contractile properties on a uniform population of regenerating muscle fibres.Supported in part by a grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America, Inc.Part of this research was carried out while on a scientific exchange between the US and Czechoslovak Academies of Sciences.

Zusammenfassung Intravenös verabreichte Tracerdosis von¹⁴C-Kreatin führt beim Huhn zur viermal höheren Aufnahme im Biceps femoris als im Musculus pectoralis. Dieser muskuläre Unterschied fällt fort, wenn gleichzeitig grosse Mengen nicht-radioaktiven Kreatins gegeben werden.

Calcium-induced calcium release mechanism in vascular smooth muscles — assessments based on contractions evoked in intact and saponin-treated skinned muscles

Summary This article was concerned with the role of Ca in triggering the contraction in vascular smooth muscles. Whenever Ca influx is activated, this Ca does not directly activate the contractile proteins, but rather triggers the release of Ca from the SR to activate calmodulin. This release of Ca by Ca is dependent on the amount of Ca stored within the cells.Voltage dependent Ca influx activated by excess concentrations of K, electrical depolarization and Ca spikes is required to produce the contraction through activation of the Ca-induced Ca release mechanism. The elucidation of the contribution of the P-I response for Ca mobilization through activation of receptors under physiological conditions hopefully will lend support to our hypothesis.     

Initiation and spreading of coxsackievirus A1 infection in muscles of newborn mice

Zusammenfassung Mittels licht- und elektronenmikroskopischer Autoradiographie wird die Ausbreitung der Coxsackievirusinfektion in vivo gezeigt: Die Viren befallen einzelne Abschnitte von Muskelfasern, wobei sich die Kerne als Ausgangspunkte der Infektion erweisen. Im zugehörigen Cytoplasmaabschnitt werden neue Viren synthetisiert, welche fortlaufend ausgeschleust werden und ihrerseits neue Abschnitte der gleichen oder anderer Muskelfasern befallen. Damit erklärt sich das bekannte Bild des asynchronen, segmentalen Zerfalls der infizierten Muskelzellen.

Protein differentiation in striated white, yellow muscles and cardiac muscles in an antarctic fish free of hemoglobin, Champsocephalus gunnari]

Antarctic hemoglobin-free fish possess, besides white and cardiac muscles, a third type of striated muscle of yellowish appearance devoid of myoglobin which corresponds to the fish red muscles. Each of these three types differs from the others by its parvalbumin composition and lactate dehydrogenase isozymic distribution.

Nerve endings isolated from chick embryonic optic tectum. 1. Developmental aspects of intact synaptosomes

Summary Fractions enriched in nerve endings (synaptosomes) have been isolated from optic tectum of chick embryos at 16 and 18 days of incubation and of chicks immediately after hatching. Morphological aspects of nerve endings have been examined with special regard to the appearance of synaptic thickenings and synaptic vesicles.

A comparison between linear and nonlinear forecasts for nonlinear AR models

In this paper the relative forecast performance of nonlinear models to linear models is assessed by the conditional probability that the absolute forecast error of the nonlinear forecast is smaller than that of the linear forecast. The comparison probability is explicitly expressed and is shown to be an increasing function of the distance between nonlinear and linear forecasts under certain conditions. This expression of the comparison probability may not only be useful in determining the predictor, which is either a more accurate or a simpler forecast, to be used but also provides a good explanation for an odd phenomenon discussed by Pemberton. The relative forecast performance of a nonlinear model to a linear model is demonstrated to be sensitive to its forecast origins. A new forecast is thus proposed to improve the relative forecast performance of nonlinear models based on forecast origins. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A new method for measuring radioactivity in select areas of intact tissue sections.

A new technique is described for measuring radioactivity in select areas of intact tissue sections. The method, which makes use of a liquid scintillation counter, also makes possible identification of the studied zones by prestaining.

Riassunto È stata determinata la fotoreattività con DNA nativo di un gruppo di furocumarine per irradiazione a 365 nm. I valori ottenuti sono risultati in accordo con quelli di attività fotosensibilizzatrice cutanea posseduti dalle stesse sostanze.

Consumption of vitamin A in intact and castrated rats. Relation to tocopherol and cytochrome P 450]

There are significant differences between castrated and non castrated male Rats in regard to vitamine A hepatic storage and plasma level. Cytochrom P 450 levels are the same in both groups. Those results are discussed.
