Sister chromatid exchanges in lymphocytes of normal and alcoholic subjects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effects of alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and age on sister chromatid exchangen (SCE) frequency in human lymphocytes were assessed by means of multiple linear regression. An increase in SCE rates was associated with alcohol consumption (p=0.0001), smoking (p=0.0231), and, to a small extent (p=0.057), age. These three confounding factors explain 48% of the inter-personal variation in SCE rates among subjects studied.We are grateful to Dr D. Summary We studied mice from five strains (BALB/c, C3H/HeSnJ, C57BL/6J, Csb and 129/ReJ) at two ages (young, 10±1 weeks; and old, 67±3 weeks) for the induction of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in vivo by methyl nitrosourea (MNU). The SCE frequency is genotype-specific. The F1 phenotype resembles the low responding parent. SCE induction is significantly lower in the older animals of each strain than their younger counterparts, and the reduction of SCE/cell with old age is strain-specific. A general explanation for these results must include strain differences in relative mutagenic sensitivity, genotype-specific pattern of reduction in DNA repair and other such factors affecting SCE formation, with old age.  相似文献

Summary (Na++K+)-ATPase activity was higher in preparations from the ileum ofGlossina mortisans than in those from the rectum. This result suggests that the ileum as well as the rectum, may play a role in osmoregulation in the tsetse fly.  相似文献

Possible reasons for the rejection of some lines ofTriticum monococcum (Tm44 and Tm46) by the aphidSitobion avenae were explored. In allT. monococcum lines studied, whether unfavourable (non-host/resistant plant) or favourable (host/susceptible plant), the concentrations of hydroxamic acids, a family of aphid-resistance factors in cereals, were significantly lower than the levels in the favourable host-plantTriticum aestivum cv. Therefore, hydroxamic acids did not account for the host/non-host patterns observed. Phloem sap was collected by stylectomy from young seedlings of favourable and unfavourable plants. In non-aphid-resistant genotypes, the success in stylectomy, the proportion of amputated stylets resulting in long (>1 min) exudations, the average duration of exudation, and the final volume of sap exuded, were higher than in the aphid-resistant genotypes. It is concluded that aphid interference with the phloem sealing system of the plant is a likely mechanism of rejection ofT. monococcum lines Tm44 and Tm46 as hosts byS. avenae.  相似文献

When leaves ofApium graveolens are exposed to vapours of methyl jasmonate (MeJa) or fed through the petiole with aqueous solutions of jasmonic acid (Ja), the levels of natural furanocoumarins, in particular xanthotoxin and bergapten, are greatly increased. The induction becomes manifest after application of 20 nmol of either Meja or Ja. Levels of xanthotoxin and bergapten begin to increase approximately 24 h after application of the inducer. Maximum concentration of the two furanocoumarins (40–70 fold increase) is reached after 4–6 days. This pronounced effect of volatile MeJa on the physiological status of the celery leaf may be considered as representative of a build-up of chemical defenses, in an undamaged plant, after receipt of airborne signals from damaged or undamaged, but fragrant plants.  相似文献

Zinc binding to the peptide replica and analogs to residues 93–115 of horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) was examined by competition of the peptides and the chromophoric chelator 4-(2- pyridylazo)resorcinol for zinc and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis of the zinc ligands. In the enzyme, zinc is coordinated by four Cys residues. In the peptide replica, zinc is bound to three Cys and one His residue. A four-Cys zinc coordination is observed only when His is removed, leading to increased zinc stability. ADH crystal structures reveal that the ε-amino group of the conserved residue Lys323 is within H-bond distance of the backbone amide oxygens of residues 103, 105 and 108, likely stabilizing the zinc coordination in the enzyme. The peptide data thus indicate structural strain and increased energy in the zinc-binding site in the protein, characteristic of an entatic state, implying a functional nature for this zinc site.
