2008 Graduate Student Spring Commencement Ceremony

Tsinghua University＇s 2008 Spring Graduate Commencement Ceremony was held in Tsinghua＇s Auditorium on the morning of January 21st, 2008. More than 1000 graduate students received degrees. Among them, 356 were awarded doctorates and 1185 master＇s degrees. President of Tsinghua and Chairman of the Degree Conferral Com- mittee Gu Binglin, Chen Xi, Chairman of the University Council, as well as other officers of Tsinghua University attended the ceremony and awarded diplomas to the students. President Gu delivered a speech at the ceremony. On behalf of the University, he extended warmest congratulations to the seated graduates and commended them for their hard work and contributions to the development of the academic atmosphere at Tsinghua.     

US National Academy of Engineering President Visits Tsinghua

President Charles Vest of the National Academy of Engineering in the United States visited Tsinghua University on June 26, 2008. Tsinghua Vice President Kang Kejun exchanged ideas with Dr. Vest on research, education, and future cooperation. During their discussion, VP Kang briefed Dr. Vest on Tsinghua＇s efforts in disciplines development, research, and international cooperation.     

Teachers Honored at Teacher＇s Day Celebration

A celebration to commemorate Teacher＇s Day was held on September 10, 2007 in Tsinghua University＇s Auditorium. More than 170 of the university＇s advanced educational groups and faculty were honored.     

Tsinghua＇s Institute of Biomedicine and MIT＇s McGovern Institute for Brain Research Sign Collaboration Agreement

Tsinghua＇s Institute of Biomedicine and Massachusetts Institute of Technology＇s McGovern Institute for Brain Research on January 14, 2008, signed a collaboration agreement to further enhance joint brain research efforts. To better know the secret of human thinking has always been a goal for scientists. In recent years especially, the development of various neural imaging technologies and neural information processing techniques has enabled researchers to overcome limitations and to explore more deeply neural functions. As a result, a complete research system, from the cellular level to the behavioral level was established. Major contributions to this research system were made by molecular, cellular, computational neuroscience, and cognitive neuroscience. Tsinghua University sponsors significant research in the area of brain studies.     

Professor Andrew Chi Chih Yao： Developing China＇s Computer Science

It was for Tsinghua University Professor Andrew Chi-chih Yao just a routine Thursday schedule. First he gave a lesson in the morning to the Pilot Computer Science class. With two foreign scholars, he conducted a seminar at 2：00 that afternoon for graduate students. By late that afternoon, Professor Yao was ready to turn to his own research. Todai Week at Tsinghua

＂Todai Week at Tsinghua＂, a major communication event between Tsinghua University and the University of Tokyo （Todai）, started May 19. The University of Tokyo is the first partner institution in Asia with which Tsinghua has cooperated to hold a University Week event.     

Numerical Investigation of Fire Smoke Transport in the Tsinghua University Sports Center

Fire Dynamics Simulator v3.0 was used to investigate and management in a realistic indoor sports center. An atrium fire test case assess fire smoke transport and ustrated the code＇s superiority over code-type empirical models for both accuracy and capability. Four fire scenarios in the Tsinghua University Sports Center were then simulated. The smoke layer＇s descent speed was predicted for each case. The importance of the door effect was revealed and an additional mechanical ventilation system for the building was proved to be of no help. The door effect must be carefully considered in future fire safety designs.     

Tsinghua SEM Achieves EQUIS Accreditation

Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management （Tsinghua SEM） was awarded accreditation from the European Quality Improvement System （EQUIS） in the end of February 2008. This makes Tsinghua SEM, the first University business school in mainland China to be accredited by EQUIS, a leading global accreditation system of management education.     

Nanomaterials Research Progress in Tsinghua University

Researchers of Professor Li Yadong＇s group at Tsinghua University have made important progress in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. On Sept. 1, 2005, a paper written by the group on ＂A General Strategy for Nanocrystals Synthesis＂ was the prestigious journal Nature.     

Director of Editorial Development, ISI, Visits Tsinghua University

Dr. James Testa, Director of Editorial Development of ISI (Institute for Scientific Information), visited Tsinghua on October 17, 2005. Tsinghua Vice President Kang Kejun had a talk with Dr. Testa. On behalf of the university, Vice President Kang welcomed Testa to Tsinghua, noting that as a world-famous institute, ISI has contributed a lot to scientific research. Tsinghua University and University of Waterloo Sign MOU

Tsinghua University and the University of Waterloo signed their first Memorandum of Understanding for Educational and Scientific Cooperation on June 17, 2005. Three Tsinghua University Faculty Honored as ＂Renowned Teacher of the Nation＂

China＇s Ministry of Education recently honored three Tsinghua University faculty members with the prestigious Renowned Teacher of the Nation Award. The winners of the award are Professor Qian Yi, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Professor Liu Guanzhong from the Academy of Arts and Design, and Professor Hua Chengying from the Department of Automation. A total often Tsinghua teachers have won the award since its inception three years ago.     

2008 Annual Advisory Board Meeting of Tsinghua SEM Held

The annual Advisory Board meeting of Tsinghua University＇s School of Economics and Management （SEM） was held at the Maila Building of Tsinghua University on August 8, 2008. At the meeting, Professor Qian Yingyi, Dean of Tsinghua SEM reported the significant progress the School has made on student, faculty, and SEM＇s internationalization process during the past year.

Commencement for Graduate Students

A commencement ceremony to award graduate degrees was held in the Auditorium at Tsinghua University on July 5, 2008. There were 1022 doctorates and 3282 master＇s degrees awarded at the ceremony.     

American Professor Appointed Department Head of Industrial Engineering

Seven New Postdoctoral Research Station Established

Seven new Postdoctoral Research Stations were authorized to Tsinghua University by Ministry of Personnel and National Postdoctoral Administration Committee. The new stations include law, sociology, Marxist theory, Chinese literature, journalism and communication, history, and public management, which increase the total number of Tsinghua＇s postdoctoral research stations to 34.
