Interaction of cellular-localized signature modules in response to prostate cancer

Rapid progress in high-throughput biotechnologies (e.g. microarrays) and exponential accumulation of gene functional knowledge makes it promising for systematic understanding of complex human diseases at the functional modules level. Current modular categorizations can be defined and selected more specifically and precisely in terms of both biological processes and cellular locations, aiming at uncovering the modular molecular networks highly relevant to cancers. Based on Gene Ontology, we identifed the functional modules enriched with differentially expressed genes and characterized by biological processes and specific cellular locations. Then, according to the ranking of the disease discriminating abilities of the pre-selected functional modules, we further defined and filtered signature modules which have higher relevance to the cancer under study. Applications of the proposed method to the analysis of a prostate cancer dataset revealed insightful biological modules.     

Several key problems in automatic layout design of spacecraft modules

Computer-aided layout design of spacecraft modules, such as satellite modules and manned spaceship modules, is of great significance and egregious complexity. It is known as a combinatorial optimization and NPC problem in mathematics, a conceptual design and complex system in engineering. The main difficulties include representation and formulation of the problem in mathematics and the solution strategy and pragmatic approaches in engineering practice. After a brief survey of the state-of-the-art in relevant fields, this paper summarizes the research work of the authors' group on automatic layout design of spacecraft modules in the last 15 years, mainly focusing on 5 key problems. They are modeling and problem-solving algorithms, interference calculation, theory and applications of layout topological pattern, decision-making in layout design, and their pragmatic approaches in engineering practice.

Intelligent interpretation of digital images of rock joints based on pattern recognition

As a composition of rockmass,structural planes are one of the chief factors that can largely control the mechanical response of rockmass and its models of deformation and failure under the action of engineering load.Rock joints are a typical sort of structural planes,which are numerous,random and universal in the rockmass.So the measurement and statistics of rock joints are the basics for classifying rockmass grades,evaluating rockmass quality,and selecting physico-mechanical parameters of rockmass.However,the traditional in situ investigation using manual measuring tools is inefficient and costly.In order to improve the above-mentioned status,new methods to measure joints should be developed,which should be efficient,simple and convenient.The rapid developments of modern digital photography and digital image processing make it possible that digital photograph devices such as digital cameras or digital videos can be used to measure joints.So based on theories and methods of pattern recognition and image processing,the intelligent interpretation of digital images of rock joints is studied,and the corresponding computational method is also put forward for the first time.The procedure and results of intelligent interpretation of a joint image have been discussed in detail.     

A new Euprox from the Late Miocene of Yuanmou,Yunnan Province,China,with interpretation of its paleoenvironment

The Yuanmou Basin of Yunnan Province is a hotspot for the research of early homind evolution and its environmental background.During the implementation of the Program“Research of the Origin and Evolution of Early Man and Its Environmental Baqckground” from 1998 to 2001,a huge quantity of hominoid and mammal fossils were collected.The present report systematically describes an Euprox robustus sp.nov.identified during the recent laboratory work on the collected material.Euprox is a group of earliest cervids with true antlers.The new species is the third one of the genus discovered in China.Judged by its morphologic characteristics,the new species feed on juicy and tender leaves of dicotyledon.It implies that the vegetation of its epoch in the Yuanmou Basin is a kind of southern subtropical evergreen forest and the climate is humid and temperate with evident seasonality.The latter is mostly influenced by the monsoon and secondly by the latitude.

The Jurassic-Cretaceous transition of Southern Sweden—palynological and sedimentological interpretation

Palynological studies on the Vitab?ck Clay help resolve the position of the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary in southern Sweden. Well-preserved assemblages of terrestrial pollen and spores, together with abundant algae (Botryococcus), and for the first time, dinoflagellates have been identified in the Vitab?ck Clay. A Berriasian age is corroborated for the Vitab?ck Clay based on the palynological data; the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary being placed around the contact of this unit with the underlying “Nytorp Sand”. The terrestrial vegetation was dominated by coniferous forest with an understorey of ferns in a warm, temperate climate. The palynoflora shows compositional similarities to the Northern Chinese Floral Province and especially the Jehol Group. The majority of the Vitab?ck Clay represents a moderate-to low-energy paralic succession. However, the basal part of the unit incorporates anomalously coarse material of mixed terrestrial and marine origin. This sedimentary package is herein interpreted to represent tsunami deposits and is similar to coeval tsunami-related deposits in France.

Environmental magnetism and paleoclimatic interpretation of the Sanmenxia loess-paleosol sequence in the southeastern extremity of the Chinese Loess Plateau

This is a report of multi-parameter mineral magnetic results of the Sanmenxia loess-pa-leosol couplets in the SE extremity of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) over the interval of L1- L13 spanning the last 1 Ma. These results show that mass-specific magnetic susceptibility (X), XARM and SIRM and their ratios exhibit parallel stratigraphic variations. Since superparamagnetic (SP) particles have significant contribution to X but no contribution to remanence, e.g., ARM and SIRM, the strong linear correlations between X and remanence (e.g., ARM and SIRM) suggest that the pedogenesis-produced magnetic grains are predominantly in small single domain range. Consequently, the significant contribution of SP particles to the bulk X as supposed in previous studies has been obviously overestimated. XARM/X data in Sanmenxia and median grain size records of typical loess sections from the hinterland of the CLP display a strong resemblance, implying that XARM/X may be regarded as a reliable indicator for monitoring the variations of ferrimagnetic grain sizes. The results of S-ratio and HIRM ((SIRM IRM-0.3T)/2) measurements indicate that there is significant enhancement of both soft magnetite/maghemite and hard hematite/goethite in paleosols associated with pedogenesis.
