The transferrin level was studied in patients with simple trisomy 21 and with Robertsonian unbalanced translocations 21/22 and 21/14. In all these groups of patients, known to have significantly lowered plasma iron levels, the transferrin levels were found to be decreased with respect to the control group. 相似文献

Down syndrome (DS) is associated with a variety of symptoms, such as incapacitating mental retardation and neurodegeneration
(i.e., Alzheimer’s disease), that prevent patients from leading fully independent lives. These phenotypes are a direct consequence
of the overexpression of chromosome 21 genes, which are present in duplicate due to non-disjunction of chromosome 21. Accumulating
data suggest that the chromosome 21 gene product, dual-specificity tyrosine-(Y)-phosphorylation regulated kinase 1A (Dyrk1A),
participates in the pathogenic mechanisms underlying the mental and other physical symptoms of DS. In this review, we summarize
the evidence supporting a role for Dyrk1A in DS, especially DS pathogenesis. Recently, several natural and synthetic compounds
have been identified as Dyrk1A inhibitors. Understanding the function and regulation of Dyrk1A may lead to the development
of novel therapeutic agents aimed at treating DS. 相似文献

Summary A comparison of the frequencies of chromosomal aberrations and the rates of SV40 transformation was made using fibroblasts obtained from 2 patients with Bloom's syndrome (BS) and from a normal individual. BS cells were found to be more susceptible to chromosome damage, in confirmation of earlier reports, but surprisingly, BS cells were distinctly less prone to transformation.Supported in part by the Michael J. Summary A statistically significant decrease of prealbumin and statistically significant increases of alpha2-macroglobulin and IgA were found in blood plasma of patients with Down's syndrome using quantitative crossed immunoelectrophoresis. We are indebted to Prof. T.C. Ubiquinol:cytochrome c oxidoreductase (complex III) and ATP synthase (complex V) are important enzymes in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Defects in mitochondrial respiratory enzymes have been reported for several neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we applied the proteomic approach to investigate protein levels of complex III core protein and complex V beta chain in brain regions of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Down syndrome (DS) patients. Complex III core protein 1 was significantly reduced in the temporal cortex of AD patients. Complex V beta chain was significantly reduced in the frontal cortex of DS patients. We conclude that decreased mitochondrial respiratory enzymes could contribute to the impairment of energy metabolism observed in DS. These decreases could also cause the generation of reactive oxygen species and neuronal cell death (apoptosis) in DS as well as AD. 相似文献
