Pyruvate metabolism in epileptic tuberculous patients

Résumé Les auteurs ont étudié la variation de la concentration de l'acide pyruvique dans le sang de 3 tuberculeux épileptiques. Ils ont vérifié l'existence d'un cycle dont le maximum coïncide avec la crise épileptique et dont le minimum la précède et semble la causer. L'effet nuisible de l'isoniazide pour les épileptiques serait dû à la consommation accélerée de l'acide pyruvique, utilisé pour la formation de l'hydrazone respective.     

Rana esculenta complex: An experimental analysis of lethality and hybridogenesis

Summary Experiments designed to analyze the lethality and hybridogenesis in the European green frog complex have yielded the following results: 1. As a rule the inter-se cross ofRana esculenta is lethal, but several crosses have produced fully viable progeny. The frequency of such break-through crosses appears to be related to parental population structure. 2. Parabiotic joining of lethal to viable embryos indicates that manifestation of the lethal effect is autonomous. There is, however, a 16–18% increase in the life span of the lethal partner. 3. Studies of LDH isozyme patterns revealed that thelessonae-specific alleles coding for the B^a and B^c subunits can be passed to the F₁ progeny from a parental female or male of theesculenta phenotype. This demonstrates that there is no total elimination of thelessonae genome in theesculenta germ cells. 4. Immunologically, offspring from the inter-se cross ofR. esculenta show a closer relationship to theridibunda than to theesculenta phenotype. Variations of antigenic protein patterns suggest the possibility of chromosomal recombination betweenlessonae andridibunda in theesculenta hybrid. These results are confirmed by two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis of proteins in the oocytes of the three frog phenotypes.This work was supported by grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Georges and Antoine Claraz Schenkung.

The experimental induction of pseudogamy in early mouse embryos

Zusammenfassung Nach Behandlung von Mäusesperma mit ultraviolettem Licht oder Röntgenstrahlen wurden bei vielen dreieinhalb Tage alten Embryonen von der Norm abweichende Chromosomensätze gefunden. Verschiedene waren haploid oder nahezu haploid; diese vermutlich durch Gynogenese entstandenen Embryonen waren gewöhnlich in ihrer Entwicklung zurückgeblichen. Behandlung der Spermatozoen mit Trypaflavin oder Toluidinblau führte zu ähnlich verzögerter Entwicklung, aber ohne klar beobachtbare Abnormalitäten des Chromosomensatzes. Es wird eine Theorie der gynogenetischen und androgenetischen Entwicklung von Mausembryonen aufgestellt, und und mit ähnlichen Entwicklungstypen bei Amphibien verglichen.     

The experimental induction of ultrastructural damage in cardiac muscle

Experimentally-induced rises in intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) promote rapid myofilament degradation in amphibian and mammalian cardiac muscle strips. The relevance of these studies to the subcellular injury produced by ischaemia, the possible involvement of lysosomal enzymes and similarities with skeletal muscle are discussed.

Zusammenfassung Ein Auswertungsverfahren der Antigen-Antikörper-Analyse mittels der Geléediffusionsmethode vonOuchterlony wird beschrieben.Die Muster des Niederschlags im Versuch werden angefärbt und der Agar-Gelée-Nährboden mit dem Muster wird durch Austrocknung konserviert.So gefärbte und getrocknete Präparate können, visuell geprüft, als Negative oder Diapositive verwendet werden.

On a reéxaminé, à la lumière de ce fait, certains résultats expérimentaux publiés récemment sur le comportement de suspensions de globules rouges et de solutés à poids moléculaire élevé.     

The effect of splenectomy on the development of experimental pyelonephritis

Summary Although an unusually high incidence of a variety of infections in infants who had undergone splenectomy has been reported by a number of investigators the subject remains somewhat controversial. In the present experiments the role of the spleen in the protection of rats against experimentally induced hematogenous pyelonephritis was studied. The results of this study suggest that the spleen has an important preventive function against bacterial infection.
