In Quail embryos, nicotinamide prevents beak and legs abnormalities produced by bidrin but remains inefficient against vertebral defects induced by bidrin and parathion. In contrast, the vertebral deficiencies are greatly alleviated or abolished by pralidoxim, an antidote known and used in organophosphorus intoxications. From these observations, a plurality in the determinism of teratogenic effects induced by organophosphorus compounds is evident.

Changes in PCO2 and total CO2 associated with changes in mucosal pH-values suggest that bicarbonate or CO2-movements toward the jejunal lumen involved in this adjustment process are predominant.

Electron microscopic examination of samples of Swiss wine, collected during the malolactic fermentation, revealed the presence of bacteriophages of three different morphological types. It is interesting to note that these phages have been found in a product whose pH is lower than 3.5.

Concanavalin A exerts an irreversible inhibitory effect on the differentiation of cultured embryonic amphibians cells in vitro. Cytological changes and distrubances of cell attachment, and spreading to the culture support occur in parallel. Polykaryons have been noticed in treated cultures.     

Evidence of urinary glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antigens excretion in 3 rodents (rat, mouse, and guinea-pig) (author's transl)]

Immunodiffusion technique, with rabbits antibodies against rat glomerular basement membrane (GBM), permits to evidence the presence of GBM antigens into normal urines of 3 rodents (rat, mouse, and guinea-pig). These results confirm the earlier works in human and rabbit urines and show the antigenic communauty existing between the 3 rodents GBM, since we can evidence antigens of 3 different mammals with the same antibody. The origin and the nature of this patterns and the signification of this presence into mammalian urines are discussed.

The activity of Artemia protocerebral median neurosecretory cells is stimulated when animals are grown in media whose tonicity is lower than that of sea weater. The substance liberated by these cells could regulate the tonicity of the internal medium.     

Antibiotically active tripeptides of the sequence L-arg-D-X-L-phe] (author's transl)]

Five tripeptides with the sequence L-Arg-D-X-L-Phe showed antibiotic activity on fungi and on some pathogenic moulds. The action of the peptides could be neutralized in the cross-strip test by the L-amino acid corresponding to the D-amino acid in the middle position.     

Cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity of the rat liver after hypophysectomy and administration of hypophyseal hormones (author's transl)]

In order to elucidate the role of the hypophysis in the regulation of cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity, male and female rats hypophysectomized on day 50 of life were treated with different hypophyseal hormones and tested on day 85 of life. Only a crude extract from human hypophysis and ovine prolactin was able to enhance the enzyme activity, thereby restoring the level of intact controls.

The effect of locally applied calcium on the vascular permeability is studied under the conditions of an acute inflammatory reaction. Using the Sephadex-inflammation, local elevated calcium concentration neither inhibited oedema formation, nor were reduction of inflammatory signs at all observed on the microscopical level.

Different autosomal chromosome fusions at piebald cattle and brown cattle are described. In randomly investigated breeds of cattle in Germany, we found 1/25 translocation in piebald cattle and a 1/29 Robertsonian fusion in brown cattle. Fertility differences were investigated.     

Phagocytosis of liposomes by mouse peritoneal macrophages (author's transl)]

Uptake of 14C-cholesterol or 3H-cholesterol labelled liposomes, stimulation of 14C-glucose oxidation, as well as ultrastructural and autoradiographical experiments have shown that liposomes are phagocytized by mouse peritoneal macrophages. Further results have shown that degradation of liposomes was not complete 2h after uptake.

The egg shell (with cuticle) of the ostrich contained a total lipid concentration of 0.19 mg/g egg shell; the phospholipids constituted the major portion, among the neutral' lipids cholesterol esters, cholesterol and free fatty acids were identified. The egg shell lipids showed a stimulating effect on the crystal growth of calcium carbonate; the highest rate of crystal growth was observed with the phospholipid fraction.     

Gastric irrigation and secretion in the ligatured or fistuled pylorus rat upon influence of intra-duodenal olive oil (author's transl)]

Pylorus ligature hides the inhibitory effects of endogenous cholecystokinine-pancreozyme (CCK-PZ) on gastric mucosal secretion and irrigation, whereas the juice collected through transduodenal pyloric fistula makes this phenomenon obvious. It appears that the pyloric fistula encourages inhibition of gastrinic secretion, so that the CCK-PZ can achieve its effects.     

Phagocytic activity of the reticuloendothelial system in the rat after administration of an anticholinesterasic pesticide, carbaryl (author's transl)]

The effects of 4 carbaryl doses (0.375, 0.75, 1.50 and 3 mg/100 g) on the reticuloendothelial system (RES) phagocytic activity were studied 1 h after their administration to male rats. Carbaryl reduced RES phagocytic activity. Results showed a dose-dependent drop in RES phagocytic activity. Carbaryl might act as an inhibitor of phagocytes by saturing them to greater or lesser degree, depending on the dose administered.
