Summary In 2 patients digitalized with digoxin or betamethyldigoxin, postmortal glycoside concentrations were determined in 7 different skeletal muscle specimens by radioimmunoassay. In the same specimens, planimetric measurements of histochemical fibre types I and II were carried out. There were higher glycoside concentrations in predominantly type I fibre muscle biopsies.

Summary In contrast to the narrow terminal innervation bands of human skeletal muscles, the vocal muscle shows a particularly extended region of synaptic contacts. A great number of muscle fibres receive two or more motor endings forming individual endplates at a distance of several hundred micra. The physiological significance would be a more rapid activation.

Mesothelzellveränderungen nach der intraperitonealen Injektion von denaturiertem Phytohaemagglutinin

Summary After the i.p. injection of heat denatured PHA, mesothelial cell changes are similar to those found after the application of natural PHA. While vacuolization of mesothelial cells and signet ring cell formation is strongly marked after the injection of natural PHA, this reaction is minor if denatured PHA is used. Furthermore, the peritoneal fluid does not contain hyaluronic acid in detectable amounts.

Summary The content of phosphocreatine and of the adenin nucleotides, ATP, ADP and AMP in the white skeletal muscle of rats of different ages has been determined.There is an age-dependent relation between the quantity of phosphocreatine and the ratio of ATP/ADP. Young rats contain relatively much phosphocreatine (up to 57%) and a high ATP/ADP ratio (mean 6.7) while old rats show less phosphocreatine (40.8%) and also a low ATP/ADP ratio (mean 2.2).

Summary It has been demonstrated by cytophotometric measurements of the DNA-content in glial- and nerve cells of the snailsHelix pomatia (Stylommatophora) andPlanorbarius corneus (Basommatophora) that the giant nuclei of nerve cells in the central ganglia contain more than tens of thousands of DNA compared with sperm nuclei. According to the DNA-content of sperms (=n), the values for glial cells are between 2n and 4n for both species.

Elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchung der phäochromen (chromaffinen) Granula in den Markzellen der Nebenniere

Summary The catechol-containing granules in the adrenal medullary cells (mouse, guinea pig, cat) are true cell organells, clearly distinguished from mitochondria; their size varies over a fairly wide range, the mean diameter being calculated at about 175 mµ in the mouse (osmium-tetroxide-fixation). They have a surrounding membrane of 100 Å thickness; their internal structure is finely granular. On the thin sections, many granules are surrounded by spaces which appear empty under the electron microscope and which are limited by double-membranes; it is most likely thatintra vitam these spaces contain lipids.

Ergebnisse der Flimmer-Elektroretinographie

Summary Some recent experimental results on retinal flicker and fusion are presented. The use of flicker electro-retinography provides an objective and quantitative method of testing rod and cone function independently. The results in human normal and diseased eyes are in full agreement with the duplicity theory of vision. The flicker fusion-intensity relation for man, cat, guinea pig, pigeon, frog, and gecko shows different values for (i) the maximum fusion frequencies within the cone and the rod system, (ii) the intensity level required to produce cone and rod flicker response. Records from single retinal ganglion cells in the cat's eye show fusion frequencies to be related to the initial spike frequency during slow flicker.

Die α-Glycerophosphat-Oxydation des Heuschreckenbrustmuskels (Locusta migratoria)

Summary The conditions were studied for the glycerophosphate oxidation by homogenate from locust flight muscle, and the O₂-consumption was measured. Maximal oxidation rates were found with 0.087m glycerophosphate, 8 × 10^–6 m cytochromec, 7 × 10^–6 m DPN and pH 7.5. The production of dihydroxyacetone phosphate is followed by further oxidation steps, as could be shown by estimation of the different fractions of acid-soluble phosphate. Comparative studies were made on different insects and vertebrates. The rate of succinate oxidation by insect muscle was found to be ten times higher than that of vertebrate muscle. The relation of glycerophosphate oxidation to succinate oxidation is quite different in insects and vertebrates, but no difference could be detected between the two types of muscle metabolism of insects: the carbohydrate and the fatutilizing type.

Summary 2-mercaptoethylguanidin enhances the blood pressure responses to small doses of vasopressine in the rat. This potentiation is statistically significant. The increase of the vasopressine reaction after 2-mercaptoethylguanidin is not due to an indirect effect of vasopressine on the cardiovascular system.

Summary Structural material reacting with colloidial iron and, particularly, after deamination binding with Alcian blue, can be demonstrated by means of the electron microscope in the sarcomeres of glycerinated locust flight muscle, especially in the I-bands. These metal bindings are eliminated by blocking reactions for acidic anionic groups, but not by hydrolytic enzymes.

Ribonucleaseaktivität isolierter Nebennierenmarkgranula

Summary Homogenates from suprarenal medulla of cattle were fractionated by density gradient centrifugation. The catecholamine and RNA content of all fractions obtained, as well as their RN-ase activity, were determined and expressed as % per mg protein. The chromaffin granules contain 49.8% of the catecholamines, 15.7% of the RNA, and 18.7% of the RN-ase activity of all fractions. The demonstration of RN-ase activity in the chromaffin granules is in favour of the hypothesis that this enzyme could catalyse the spontaneous release of RNA, catecholamines, and ATP at 37°C.
