Eight Faculty to Receive Grants from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars

Eight Tsinghua faculty will receive National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars grants ranging from 1.4 to 2 million RMB over a period of four years. The grant recipients are： Professor Zhang Shuangnan from the Department of Physics, Associate Professor Wang Xun from the Department of Chemistry, Professor Liu Yongle from the Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Professor Yang Dinghui from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Professor Zhang Yinping from the School of Architecture, Professor Huang Xia from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Professor Wang Xiangbin from the Department of Physics, and Professor Yang Baiyin from the School of Economics and Management. Up to now, a total of more than 100 Tsinghua faculty have received grants from this fund.

Top Science Honor Goes to Two Tsinghua Alumni

It was a double honor for Tsinghua when alumni Liu Dongsheng and Wang Yongzhi took home the State Preemi-nent Scientific and Technical Award this year. Automation in Power Grid Dispatch

A project named ＂A New Generation of Energy Management with Three Dimensional Coordination＂ has recently passed technical appraisal from the Ministry of Education. Professor Wen Bangchun Was Elected the Member of the Academic Council of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Professor Wen Bangchun with the Northeast University of Technology was elected to be the member of the Technologital Science Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in November 1991. It is the highest honor given to Chi-nase scientists. Professor Wen was born in 1930 and graduated from the Depertment of Mechnics and Electronics of the Universi-ty. For more than 30 years, he has studied the science of vibration application engineering systematically, a frontier sci-ence of mechanics combined with vibration theory and of wide application values in industry.

Professor Jun Murai Appointed Guest Professor of Tsinghua

Professor Jun Murai, distinguished IT expert in Japan and Vice President of Keio University, was appointed Tsinghua Guest Professor on December 10, 2007. Tsinghua Alumnus Academician Wu Zhengyi Won 2007 National S＆T Top Award

The annual national science-technology award ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on January 8, 2008. Renowned botanist Wu Zhengyi, a Tsinghua alumnus, and petrochemical scientist Min Enze won the 2007 State S＆T top awards for their outstanding achievements. Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders including Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, and Li Keqiang, attended the ceremony. Chinese Presi- dent Hu presented the award to two scientists. Botanist Wu, 91, has been engaged in botanical research and education for 70 years. The botany professor, also a CAS senior academician, graduated from the biology department of Tsinghua University in 1937 and later became director of the botany institute of CAS.
