Effect of air ionization of blood serotonin in vitro.

The effect of negative and positive air ionisation on siliconized blood serotonin was studied in vitro. The experiments showed that within 10 min positive ionisation increased serotonin levels in total blood (+40%), plasma (+90%), erythrocytes (+50%) and thrombocytes (+240%). On the other hand, negative ionization (10 min) lowered the serotonin content of total blood (-30%), plasma (-42.5%), erythrocytes (-41.7%) and thrombocytes (-72.3%), thus confirming the 'Krueger Effect' in vitro.     

Effect of lithium on the blood and intestinal serotonin contents of rats

Effect of reserpine analogues on tissue serotonin

Summary Cell and organotypical cultures are used to study the direct effect of serotonin and of ketanserin, a serotonin antagonist, on dermal and epidermal cells of embryonic chick skin. Ketanserin stimulates the increase in cell number and inhibits the differentiation, whereas serotonin stimulates differentiation and inhibits the increase in cell number.

Influence of heparin and serotonin on basophil leucocytes of rabbit blood

Résumé Chez le lapin, l'injection intraveineuse d'héparine a été suivie d'une diminution significative du nombre des basophiles du sang au cours de 6 h. La sérotonine a produit pendant ce temps une augmentation du nombre total des leucocytes, et au bout de 24 h, une augmentation spécifique du nombre des basophiles.Les basophiles n'ont pas changé de nombre après l'injection de protamine ou de réserpine.

Effect of des-Tyr1-gamma-endorphin on serotonin metabolism in rat brain regions

Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of des-Tyr1-gamma-endorphin (0.1 and 1.0 microgram) caused a decrease of the serotonin (5-HT) concentration of the hippocampus. The concentration of 5-HIAA and the pargyline-induced alterations in 5-HT and 5-HIAA were not affected. No effects were noticed in other brain regions.     

Corticosteroidogenesis by isolated human adrenal cells: Effect of serotonin and serotonin antagonists

Summary The direct effect of serotonin and antiserotonin agents on adrenal steroid biosynthesis was studied in isolated adrenal cells derived from patients with Cushing's syndrome. The results indicate that serotonin increases corticosterone production, while the serotonin antagonists cyproheptadine and methysergide depress adrenal steroid-particularly cortisol and aldosterone-biosynthesis.The authors are indebted to Dr. M. Effects of serotonin and ketanserin on the functional morphology of chick down feather bulbi in vitro

Summary Chick feather bulbi cultured in vitro showed an increased DNA synthesis and a delayed keratinization after treatment with ketanserin, a serotonin₂ antagonist with wound-healing properties. In contrast, serotonin stimulates keratinization of the keratinocytes in the bulbus.     

A simple routine-method to preserve and determine blood serotonin

Résumé Une nouvelle méthode de routine pour le dosage par spectrophotofluorométrie de la sérotonine dans 1 ml de sang est décrite. Grâce à l'emploi d'un antioxydant et à une congélation immédiate, le taux de sérotonine reste constant pendant au moins une semaine.

Zusammenfassung 5-OH-Dopa und 5-OH-Dopamin senken in vivo den Serotoningehalt und vermindern in vitro dosisabhängig die Aufnahme von³H-Serotonin im Striatum von Ratten. Es kann daher angenommen werden, dass 5-OH-Dopamin in vivo überwiegend eine Verdrängung von Serotonin aus den serotoninergen Speichern verursacht, während in vitro zusätzlich eine Verdrängung von unspezifisch in katecholaminerge Speicher aufgenommenem Serotonin auftreten kann.
