Specific reaction of aloe extract with serum proteins of various animals.

We found that aloe extract contains a lectin-like substance which reacts with serum proteins of various animals. Furthermore, in human serum 2 proteins, alpha2-macroglobulin and alpha1-antitrypsin, were shown to be reactive with aloe extract.     

Effect of prostaglandins on skin tumorigenesis

Summary Concomitant administration of prostaglandins E₂ (PGE₂) and F₂ a(PGF₂ a) with a carcinogen, 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA) to mice for 2 months markedly enhanced the occurrence of squamous cell carcinomas. Only epidermal cell hyperplasia occurred in mice treated with MCA alone by that time. Radioactivity measurements and electron microscopic autoradiography revealed that prostaglandins stimulate DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in neoplastic cells. These findings indicate that PGE₂ and PGF₂ a can act as cocarcinogens on skin tumorigenesis.     

Erythropoietic effects of PGE2 and 2 endoperoxide analogs

Summary The erythropoietic effects in exhypoxic polycythemic mice of two endoperoxide analogs were assessed and compared with PGE₂. The 9a, 11a epoxymethano analog (U-44069) was found to be a much more potent erythropoietic stimulus than the 11a,9a analog (U-46619) or PGE₂.This work was supported by a Senior Research Grant-in-Aid from the American Heart Association-Louisiana (DMG) and USPHS Grant No. AM 13211 (JWF).

Summary The authors investigated the distribution of serum proteins, especially the ₂ fraction, in rats with artificially induced hypertension (A), in similar rats made normotone by choline-free diet (B), and in a control group (C). A rise in the ₂ fraction of groupA andB was found, without a significant change of the other serum proteins.

Summary It is shown that there are important differences among the serum proteins of 3 different species of trout. We stress that these genetic variations concern the lipoproteins as well as the glycoproteins. Furthermore, 3 serum proteins ofEsox lucius have antigenic determinants common with the serum proteins ofS. gairdneri; they are an ₂-lipoprotein, an ₂-glycoprotein and a -globulin.

Effects of anaesthesia and chronic catheterization on circulating levels of prostaglandins (PGE2 and PGF2a in dogs

Summary Chronic catheterization of aorta and inferior vena cava in dogs did not significantly affect circulating levels of prostaglandins (PGE₂ and PGF_2a ). Alkyl substituents and the cyclisation of esters

Summary K(CdCl₃) has a structure of the E 2₄-type. In comparison with the isotype (NH₄) (CdCl₃) only two of the three lattice constants have noticeably different values. They area andb which show a contraction of about 2%, whereas the constantc is about the same for both salts.     

Affinity chromatography of human serum proteins using matrix bound lectin fromViscum album L.

Summary The D-galactose specific lectin fromViscum album L. reacts with serum proteins that contain the corresponding D-galactopyranosyl residues. By affinity chromatography of human serum on lectin-sepharose IgM, ₂-macroglobulin, haptoglobin and -lipoprotein were quantitatively retained. Only parts of IgA, IgG and transferrin were retarded. The other serum proteins are unbounded as albumin, ₁A– and ₁C.     

Application of the linear partial information model to forecasting the Swiss timber market

Most often, statistical analyses only provide partial information about the appropriateness of different models, structures and parameters which may underlie the dynamic process that has generated a time series. Linear partial information (LPI), in particular, consists of linear restrictions such as LPI: p_a> p_b, p_a> p_c where p_a denotes the probability that structure a holds. Fuzzy information of this type can be put to use for decision-making by LPI analysis. In this paper, LPI analysis is applied to answer the question of whether subsidizing price, given an abnormal disturbance on the timber market, would contribute to continuous forest management, a stated goal of Swiss environmental policy.

Relationship of ornithine decarboxylase activity to HCG induced androgen production by rabbit testis

Summary In the rabbit testicular ornithine decarboxylase activity and androgen content as well as serum androgens were increased 4 h after the injection of HCG. D,L-a-difluoromethylornithine (a-DFMO) alone or together with HCG inhibited enzyme activity although testicular and serum androgens were significantly increased aftera-DFMO and HCG. These data suggest that ODC activity is not required for testicular androgen production.This work was supported by the Medical Research Council of Canada, MT 4192.

Summary The electrodialytic purification of blood serum was attempted with the aid of specially prepared protein membranes. We succeeded in completely removing the electrolytes from the serum at any desiredp _H. The blood serum was rendered quantitatively saltfree and any coagulation of proteins was avoided.Under conditions of sterility these highly concentrated saltfree protein solutions show a remarkable stability.The colloid-chemical and physiological significance of these results is discussed.

Effect of sodium chloride on the respiratory function ofStaphylococcus aureus

Summary Sodium chloride at concentrations below 0.5 M, enhanced the respiratory activity (O₂-consumption) ofStaphylococcus aureus under endogenous and sugar-supported conditions, but did not overcome the inhibitory action of sodium azide. Several sugars, including the glucose analoguea-methylglucoside, and their metabolites enhanced bacterial O₂-consumption, but acetylmethylcarbinol was ineffective.     

Effects of biotin deficiency on serum proteins and plasma amino acids

Summary In biotin-deficient rats, a decrease of total proteins, attributable to a decrease of albumin anda ₁-globulin fractions, a decrease of the pre--lipoproteins and an increase of the -lipoproteins, was observed, together with a rise of total amino acids. Such a situation may be related to the influence of biotin on the synthesis of RNA and proteins.     

Dissociation constants of water-insoluble carboxylic acids by13C-NMR. pK as of mesobiliverdin-XIIIα and mesobilirubin-XIIIα

High-field¹³C-NMR of¹³C-enriched compounds in dilute aqueousd ₆-Me₂SO solutions provides a simple, accurate method for measuring pK _as of sparingly soluble carboxylic acids. Using this method, we found the pK _as of mesobilirubin-XIII to be 4.2 and 4.9, much lower values than reported recently for bilirubin, and of mesobiliverdin-XIII to be 3.9 and 5.3.     

Oviposition stimulants of aCitrus-feeding swallowtail butterfly,Papilio xuthus L

Summary A methanolic extract ofCitrus unshiu induces oviposition by females of aCitrus-feeding swallowtail butterfly,Papilio xuthus L. The chemical factors responsible for stimulating oviposition were isolated and characterized as 5-hydroxy-N-methyltryptamine, adenosine, vicenin-2, narirutin, hesperidin and rutin. An artificial blend of these six components elicited significant oviposition behavior, apparently identical to that induced by contact with intactCitrus leaves.

Summary The concept of ethylogy is introduced to correlate reactions of compounds of the typea-C-X and those of their ethyloguesa-C-C-C-X,a being a group capable of electron donation andX an electron-accepting leaving group.Besides normal substitution and elimination ofX ina-C -C -C -X, the latter type of compound may undergo cleavage of the C -C bond. This fragmentation produces an olefin in addition to the products also derivable from the simpler compounda-C-X. A number of such fragmentation reactions are reviewed.In the case of-halo amines, there are indications that, depending on structure and stereochemistry, fragmentation can occur by a one-step or two-step process. It is considered likely that the duality and merging of mechanism encountered in simple systemsa-C-X will also prevail in the fragmentation of their ethylogues.
