Bilinear correlation between tissue water content and diastolic stiffness of the ventricular myocardium

Summary In oedematous and dehydrated canine hearts a close bilinear correlation was demonstrated between myocardial water content and diastolic stiffness (characterized by the passive elastic modulus) with an optimal minimum of stiffness at normal myocardial water content.     

An experimentally produced change in the sequence of neuralizing and mesodermalizing inductive actions

Zusammenfassung Die normale Reihenfolge der neuralisierenden und mesodermalisierenden Aktionen wurde experimentell umgekehrt. Im Explantatversuch diente die präsumptive Epidermis des Molchkeimes als Reaktionsmaterial. Als neuralisierender Induktor wurden HeLa-Zellen nach Wärme- und Alkoholbehandlung, und als mesodermalisierender das Knochenmarkgewebe des Meerschweinchens nach Alkoholbehandlung benutzt. Die Anordnung der Versuche sowie die Analyse der induzierten Gebilde sind in der Figur dargestellt. Das Resultat wird mit der Zwei-Gradienten-Hypothese der induzierenden Agenzien erklärt.

Riassunto Sono state calcolate le costanti di dissociazione dei complessi fra la RNA-polimerasi II e la metil--amanitina, la -amanitina e la metil-aldoamanitina. La K _d è risultata essere 3.6×10^–9 M per la metil--amanitina e 3.2×10^–9 M per la -amanitina. La metil-aldoamanitina non si lega all'enzima.

The dissociation constants (KA) and the relative intrinsic efficacies (e) of 4-acetoxy-piperidines and -thiacyclohexanes were determined on the guinea-pig isolated left atrium. The differences in the muscarinic potencies are associated with differences in affinities and efficacies, respectively.

How incoherent measurement succeeds: Coordination and success in the measurement of the earth's polar flattening

The development of nineteenth-century geodetic measurement challenges the dominant coherentist account of metric success. Coherentists argue that measurements of a parameter are successful if their numerical outcomes convergence across varying contextual constraints. Aiming at numerical convergence, in turn, offers an operational aim for scientists to solve problems of coordination. Geodesists faced such a problem of coordination between two indicators of the earth's polar flattening, which were both based on imperfect ellipsoid models. While not achieving numerical convergence, their measurements produced novel data that grounded valuable theoretical hypotheses. Consequently, they ought to be regarded as epistemically successful. This insight warrants a dynamic revision of coherentism, which allows to judge the success of a metric based on both its coherence and fruitfulness. On that view, scientific measurement aims to coordinate theoretical definitions and produce novel data and theoretical insights.
