Vice President Sun Jiaguang Visited Japan and Germany on International Evaluation

From May 13 to 22, 2008, NSFC Vice President Prof. Sun Jiaguang led a 6-member delegation on international evaluation to Japanese Society for Science Promotion （JSPS） and German Research Foundation （DFG）. They conducted wide range and in-depth discussions with leaders and relevant staff in the two organizations on the background, organization, preparation, process and impact of international evaluation on science funding agencies. The delegation was warmly received by JSPS Executive Director Prof. Izawa, DFG Vice President Prof. Ferdi Schueth and Secretary General Dr. Dorothee Dzwonnek. During their visit in Japan, they also paid a visit to Tokyo University of Technology and held talks with its Vice President and visited the super computer center of the university. Other members of the delegation came from the Bureaus of Planning, Policy, Finance and International Cooperation.     

Prof. Chen Yiyu meets with the Max Planck Society Delegation

On April 7, Prof. Chen Yiyu, President of NSFC, met with Mr. Philippe Busquin, the Research Commissioner of the European Commission. Vice President Shen Wenqing Visits U.S. and Canada

NSFC Vice President Shen Wenqing led an NSFC Mathematical and Physical Sciences Delegation and paid visits to the U.S.and Canada during June 1-10,2011. During the stay in the U.S.,the delegation visited the U.S.National Science Foundation(NSF) and the U.S.Department of Energy(DOE) respectively,with aim to exchange views on possible mechanisms for enhancing future bilateral cooperation in mutually interested fields such as mathematical sciences,astronomy and high energy physics,etc.Ms.Machi Dilworth,Head of NSF Office of International Science     

The Sino-U.K. Seminar on Genome Analysis and Bio-molecular Sciences Held in Beijing

Co-sponsored by NSFC and the British Council, the Sino-UK Seminar on Genome Analysis and Bio-molecular Sciences was held in Beijing from Mar. 14 to 15. Prof. Zhu Zuoyan, Vice President of NSFC, attended the seminar and extended his warm congratulations on behalfofNSFC. In his speech, he also expressed his hope that young scientists from both China and the UK should build up friendship and cooperation through dialogue and mutual understanding so as to work for a brighter future.

February 23, 2004, Prof Chen Yiyu President of NSFC, Prof. Zhu Zuoyan Vice President of NSFC and Prof. Shi Changxu, Member ofCAS, met with Prof. Yang Zhenning, American Chinese Nobel Prize Laureate.     

NSFC Delegation Visits the U.S.

The Science Fund Performance Evaluation Delegation, headed by Prof. Sun Jiaguang, Vice President of NSFC, visited the U. S. A. from July 6 to 11, 9008. During the visit, the delegation met with the administrative sections of the National Science Foundation （NSF）, National Institutes of Health （NIH） and the White House Office of Management and Budget （OMB）, and obtained more comprehensive under-standing of the concepts, procedures, structures and relevant working systems of performance evaluation at NSF and NIH through face-to-face consultation and discussion. The delegation was composed of NSFC staff from the Bureau of Planning, Bureau of Finance, Bureau of Policy, Bureau of International Cooperation, General Office and a representative from the Chinese Ministry of Finance.     

从国家自然科学基金看我国各省市基础研究竞争力

国家自然科学基金是我国支持基础研究的主要渠道之一,被科研人员公认为国内最规范、最公正、最能反映研究者竞争能力的研究基金.获得国家自然科学基金资助的竞争能力可以比较直观地反映出地区基础研究的水平和竞争力.基于对国家自然科学基金立项信息的深入计算分析,本文构建了基于国家自然科学基金竞争能力的基础研究综合竞争力指数,并结合其他相关统计指标,利用动态图表对我国大陆31个省市的基础研究竞争力进行了系统的动态交互式的可视化对比分析.研究结果表明:我国基础研究力量的地理分布非常不均匀,各省市间的竞争力差异巨大,但总体正朝着积极向好的方向发展.     

Top Heads Met at China-US Computer Science Leadership Summit

NSFC Vice President Sun J iaguang, heading a delegation composed of computer science professionals and NSFC staff, attended the Second China-US Computer Science Leadership Summit held in the U. S. A. from July 9 to 13, 2008, which was jointly sponsored by NSFC and NSF. NSF attached great importance to the summit and its Director, Dr. Arden L. Bement, attended the summit. When talking with Prof. Sun, Dr. Bement expressed his hope for the further consolidation of the cooperative relationship between NSF and NSFC and the substantial enhancement of the collaboration and exchanges between scientists from the U. S. A. and China. They also delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.     

Vice President Shen Wenqing Met with ANR President

On November 19, 2008, Prof. Shen Wenqing, NSFC Vice President, met with Dr. Jacques Stern, the visiting President of the French National Research Agency （ANR）. The Attendees from NSFC were Mr. Zhang Zhaotian, Deputy Director-general, and Mr. Liu Ke, Director of Division from the Department of Information Sciences, and Mr. Lu Rongkai, Director of Division of the Bureau of International. The meeting was followed by a lunch at NSFC.

Oct. 10-18, 2004, NSFC delegation headed by Prof. Sun Jiaguang, Vice President of NSFC visited the United States of America. They attended the 11 th Sino-US Joint Commission Meeting on Scientific and Technological Coop-eration, and visited NSF, University of Washington, the Boeing Company and Microsoft. Prof. Chen Yiyu, President of NSFC, paid a successful visit to France and Germany from July 12 to 23, 2004.     

A successful visit to the United Kingdom

At the invita-tion of the Royal Society, the NSFC life science dele-gation headed by Prof. Zhu Zuoyan,Vice President of NSFC, paid a suc-cessful visit to the United Kingdom from Sept. 28 toOct. 8, 2004.     

A NSFC delegation visited the Bioversity International

On 13 November 2008, a NSFC delegation headed by Professor Wang Jie, Vice President of NSFC, paid a visit to the Bioversity International in Italy. The Bioversity International is one of the 15 centers under the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research（CGIAR）.     

Evaluation of Projects for Basic Research of Scientific Instruments in 2008 Completed

In 2008, NSFC received 139 proposals for the special fund of Basic of Scientific Instruments, out of which 35 were selected into the second round competition through peer review by correspondence. The panel meeting was held in Beijing from June 26 to 27, 2008 with the attendance of 27 experts from 21 institutions. NSFC Vice President, Prof. Sun Jiaguang attended the meeting and delivered a speech.     

NSFC Life Science Delegation Visits France Successfully

At the invitation of INRA (Institut National de la Recheche Agronomique) and CNRS (Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), the NSFC life science delegation headed by Prof. Zhu Zuoyan, Vice President of NSFC, paid a visit to France from Nov. 18 to 29, 2003.     

Scientific Evaluation and Regeneration of Eco-building Experience in Traditional Dwellings

In 1996, Department of Engineering and Material Sciences,National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC), accepted the suggestion made by some experienced members of CAS and published the key support project Green Architecture System and Dwelling Pattern in application guide for NSFC project. The project research group, led by Prof. Liu Jiaping, submitted an application entitled Green Architectural System and Dwelling Patterns, which was approved with support in August. Joint Sino-US Symposium on Ecological Complexity and Ecosystem Services Held in Beijing

May24-25, 2004, Joint Sino-US Symposium on Eco-logical Complexity and Ecosys-tem Services was held in Bei-jing. The symposium was co-sponsored by NSFC, CAS and NSF, and was organized by InstituteofZoology, CAS and Arizona State University. Prof.Zhu Zuoyan, Vice President of NSFC, attended the opening ceremony and made an impor-tant speech.

6.4 Billion Yuan for NSFC Projects in 2008

NSFC President Prof. Chen Yiyu announced at NSFC＇s Sixth Plenary Session of the General Assembly that a budget of 53.59 billon yuan, which is an increased of 25% to that of last year, was approved by the government for the fiscal year 2008. In practice, NSFC, based on the demand of national budgeting reform and the development of basic research, will arrange a funding plan of 6.4 billion yuan.     

Prof. Zhu Daoben pays a working visit to Belgium and Poland

NSFC delegation, headed by Prof. Zhu Daoben, Vice President, paid a visit to Belgium and Poland from May 11 to 19.
