Summary The oxydative desamination of amino acids in the liver of acute uremic rats is increased. Simultaneously the citric acid cycle in the liver of these rats is stimulated. It is suggested that the ketone-acids formed by the increased amino acid degradation are removed by the activated citric acid cycle.

Summary The O₂-consumption of liver tissue of male rats of different ages during the first 10 days at an altitude of 3540 m was significantly decreased on the 5th and 7th day. The deviation from the controls at ground level was – 19% in 40-day-old and – 30% in 11-month-old male rats.

Summary During the first wave of parenchymal liver regeneration in adult rats after partial hepatectomy, the cellular synthesis and migration of RNA and the metabolism of protein were studied by autoradiography following an injection of³H-cytidine or³H-l-phenylalanine and double injections of 1 of these precursors +³H-thymidine. The following results were obtained: the synthesis and migration of RNA and the metabolism of protein are enhanced under these conditions of proliferation. In spite of this, the relation of metabolic activity in nucleolus, karyoplasm and cytoplasm remains constant. By double injection techniques it is proved that no differences exist in migration of RNA into the cytoplasm and cytoplasmic protein synthesis between cells with or without DNA synthesizing nuclei.

Summary By infusing doubly labelled conjugates into the duodenum or into a mesenteric vein it could be demonstrated that DHEA-sulfate passes the intestinal wall as well as the liver nearly without hydrolysis. However, most of the glucuronoside is hydrolysed in the intestine and reconjugated as sulfate.

Untersuchungen über die alkylierende Wirkung von14C-Methylnitrosoharnstoff und 1-14C-Äthylnitrosoharnstoff

Summary Alkylation of RNA from brain, liver and kidney in rats after application of¹⁴C-methylnitrosourea and 1-¹⁴C-ethylnitrosourea was investigated. After administration of¹⁴C-methylnitrosourea the amount of 7-methylguanine in the RNA of brain and liver is about the same. Analogic experiments using 1-¹⁴C-ethylnitrosourea showed no alkylation of the RNA in the organs investigated. This leads to the conclusion that there is no direct correlation between the alkylation of RNA and organotropic carcinogenic activity of the compounds studied.

Summary Rats treated by i.p. injections of a homologous thymus are protected, probably by greater reactivity, against the toxic and carcinogenic influence of diethylnitrosamine on the liver, effects that increase with time in untreated controls, long after cessation of drug administration, as is shown by the greater extent of degeneration in animals killed at longer than at shorter intervals.

Summary Following 2/3 hepatectomy + CCl₄, the labelling- (³H-thymidine) and mitosis-index of liver epithelia increases 8 h later than after an unique 2/3 hepatectomy, and the peak of compensatory regeneration is reached 16 h later. Then the curve declines and 48 h post operationem reparative regeneration due to CCl₄ necrosises starts.

Summary Macroscopic anatomical investigations on the brain of the Blue Whale (Sibbaldus musculus Linnaeus, total brain weight without dura: 6500 g), show that this species of cetacea has a degree of cerebralization between that of the primitive Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis Desmoulins) and that of the Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae Borowski). Of the Balaenopteridae examined to date, the Blue Whale has the lowest cerebralization.

Purin- und Pyrimidinbasen der Desoxyribonukleinsäure des Ehrlichschen Mäuse-Ascites-Karzinomas

Summary The proportion of purines and pyrimidines in the DNA of the Ehrlich mouse ascites carcinoma is examined and compared with the base proportion of the DNA from liver and kidney of the normal mouse. The following findings were obtained: The DNA of the ascites tumor contains more guanine and less cytosine and thymine than the DNA of the normal mouse. For guanine this difference is statistically significant. The changed base compound is discussed with regard to the changed growing rate in tumors and the altered chromosome structure in the Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.

Summary (1) The increased tissue catecholamine level of the thiamine deficient rat was shown in the atrium, the ventricle, the brain cortex and in the spleen but not in the brain stem and the adrenal gland. (2) The increased response to tyramine of the thiamine deficient heart is most probably due to the high catecholamine level caused by thiamine deficiency. (3) The increased catecholamine content in the thiamine deficient rat does not result from the increased pyruvic acid.

Morphometrische Untersuchungen an der Rattenleber — Parenchymzelle nach Anwendung verschiedener Fixationspuffer

Summary The effect of 2 fixatives, (1) s-Collidin buffered OsO₄, (2) phosphate buffered OsO₄, on the liver cell was studied by morphometric analysis. After fixation with solution 2, large areas of smooth endoplasmic reticulum were covered by electron-opaque deposits of glycogen. No such masking was noticed by using solution 1. Other cell organelles showed no significant differences in their relative volumes. By using fixative solution 2, decrease in glycogen can simulate relative volume increase of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

Summary By autoradiographic studies with H³-thymidine it is demonstrated that the percentage of labelled nuclei is very low in the anterior pituitary of normal untreated rats and of rats 14 days after thyreoidectomy. Following castration, however, a marked increase of DNA-synthesizing cells occurs as well as an increase of mitotic figures.
