Summary In unoperated fasted rats, feeding raised the serum gastrin concentration, reduced the gastric mucosal histamine content and activated the gastric histidine decarboxylase. The reduction of gastric histamine and activation of histidine decarboxylase was induced also by the injection of pentagastrin. In antrectomized rats, feeding failed to produce these effects. Injection of pentagastrin, however, still lowered gastric histamine and activated gastric histidine decarboxylase. Thus, antral gastrin seems to be an obligatory mediator of the postprandial activation of histidine decarboxylase and mobilization of histamine.Acknowledgments. Summary Fasted rats have a low gastric histidine decarboxylase activity. I.v. infusion of heptadecapeptide gastrin for 2 h raised the enzyme activity. Intragastric perfusion with the same dose of gastrin and for the same period of time did not reproduce the effect of circulating gastrin. The serum gastrin concentration and the gastric histidine decarboxylase activity are high in freely fed, unoperated rats but low in antrectomized rats. Following food deprivation the serum gastrin level and the enzyme activity are reduced simultaneously in the unoperated rats. Male rats exposed to the cold (4°C) for five or ten days exhibited modifications in their thyroid state, as documented by increases in serum thyroid hormone levels, to which differently graded modifications of heart weight/body weight ratio, heart rate, and resting metabolic rate were associated. The values of the above mentioned thyroid state indicators returned to those of the control when the animals, kept at cold for ten days, were re-exposed to room temperature (24°C) for an additional 10 days. The configuration of action potentials, recorded in vitro at 26°C from fibres of anterior papillary muscles, was different in control rats of different age and was affected by prolonged cold exposure. In fact, the action potential duration (APD) increased after ten days of cold exposure. In the re-exposed group the APD was not different from that of the controls. Such a pattern was not significantly modified when the stimulation frequency increased from 1 Hz to 5 Hz. The above results suggest that in cold exposure, as in experimental hyperthyroidism, thyroid hormone might exert a cardiac chronotropic effect by modifying heart electrophysiological properties. Thus thyroid hormone should play a basic role during the exposure to cold environment, stimulating the body metabolism and increasing heart rate as a response to the requirement for greater tissue perfusion.  相似文献

Summary 30-day-old rats undernourished from birth are known to have large deficits in the synapse-to-neuron ratio in certain brain regions. It has not been possible to demonstrate any statistically significant deficits in this ratio in animals undernourished from birth to 30 days but then provided with an ad libitum amount of food till 6 months of age.Acknowledgments. Summary Renin was found in the submandibular glands of male Quackenbush mice in concentrations higher than has been reported for any tissue of any strain or species. However, no renin-like activity could be detected in glands from male and female Wistar rats using either pH 5.8 or 7.4 for assay and a radioimmunoassay specific for renin's reaction product, angiotensin I. Summary The omentum of 13 rats were removed from the abdomen and placed directly on the brain. 5–14 days later the omentum and the underlying brain were joined by numerous vascular anastomoses in 9 rats. Summary Gastric tissue histamine concentration was determined in albino rats following daily parenteral injection of betamethasone over a period of 12 days. The result shows a highly significant fall in gastric tissue histamine concentration in comparison with that in saline-treated albino rats over a similar period.This investigation was carried out as a part of a project supported by a research grant from Medical Research Centre, Bombay Hospital Trust, Bombay, India.  相似文献

Summary Small intestinal explants from pre- and post-natal rats were incubated in an organ culture system in the absence and presence of epidermal growth factor (EGF). The rate of synthesis of small intestinal DNA and protein as well as the activity of lactase and alkaline phosphatase increased rapidly between 17 and 20-day gestational age, whereafter they declined. The maximal incorporation of3H-thymidine and14C-alanine into DNA and protein, respectively, was significantly stimulated by EGF (100 ng/ml). EGF had no effect on the activity of either lactase or alkaline phosphatase in the small intestinal explants.Acknowledgment. Summary L-lysine administration to male weanling rats at a dose of 110.4 mg (25% LD50) per 100 g body weight per day for 15 days reduced the liver total ascorbic acid level. The biosynthesis as well as the degradation of L-ascorbic acid was diminished under these conditions. The fall in liver total ascorbic acid level after L-lysine administration was ascribed to its reduced synthesis.Acknowledgment. The female offspring received either pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) or PMSG followed by human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) at 30 days of age. The ovaries of fetal ethanol-exposed animals responded greater to the exogeneous gonadotrophins with enhanced ovarian weights, increased numbers of ova shed, greater numbers of corpora lutea and antral follicles, and higher serum progesterone levels than in animals exposed to the control diets during gestation.  相似文献

Summary T-cell leukemia was induced at a high rate in female Fischer rats by continuous oral administration of 1-propyl-1-nitrosourea. Summary Lead was given in the diet (1%) to rats from birth and at different times the animals were studied for delta amino levulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity, spleen weight,59Fe incorporation in erythrocytes and51Cr-labeled erythrocytes survival. The increased ALAD and spleen weight found after lead treatment is explained as a consequence of a shortened survival, which results in a younger age of circulating erythrocytes with higher ALAD activity.Supported by Contract No. 140-76-12 ENV.
