Flask-shaped microfossils are reported from bracts of a moss in Eocene-Oligocene amber from the northern Dominican Republic. These microfossils are identical with the thecae of certain living moss-dwelling rotifers in the genusHabrotrocha (Bdelloidea), which have previously been reported as fossils only from Holocene peat. What may be an egg and a rotifer body fossil are associated with these thecae and further support the identification of these fossils withHabrotrocha; the fossils are almost identical to extantH. angusticollis. The parthenogenetic bdelloid rotifers have a longer evolutionary history than was previously thought; habrotrochid rotifers seem to have persisted for 35 million years with very little change in morphology or ecological role. 相似文献

Summary A piece of amber from the Dominican Republic contained approximately 50 strands of mammalian hair. Based on its characteristics and the identification of two species of fossilized ectoparasites that were also present, it is probable that the hair belonged to a rodent. This find represents the earliest fossil remains of land mammals in the Antilles and lends support to the vicariance model of West Indian biogeography. 相似文献

Recently discovered representatives of the Class Bdelloidea from Tertiary amber from the Dominican Republic represent the oldest known fossils of the Phylum Rotifera. Assuming that the fossil bdelloids had a similar mode of reproduction as present day members of the Class (apomictic thelytoky), then contrary to current thought, some lines of parthenogenetic organisms are not doomed to an early extinction and have evolved built-in mechanisms for genetic diversity. 相似文献

Hymenaea protera is described from amber originating from La Toca mine in the Dominican Republic. The fossil species is characterized by the presence of reduced petals as well as distinctly clawed showy petals with cordate to reniform bases and a glabrous, verrucose ovary with long hirsute hairs at its base and along one margin. The fossil species most closely resembles the extantH. verrucosa Gaertner which occurs in East Africa and adjacent islands. These findings are interpreted as supporting a hypothesis that the genusHymenaea arose in the late Cretaceous on the combined South American-African continents and that Cretaceous and early Tertiary landmass movements were significant in determining the present amphi-Atlantic distribution of the genus. It is proposed that at least the majority, if not all, of the amber recovered from La Toca mine and other mines in the vicinity with similar-aged deposits originated fromH. protera. 相似文献

Hymenaea protera leaflet fossils entombed in amber, dated at 30 to 40 million years (mine strata and exomethylene dating) were observed by both light and transmission electron microscopy. Ultrastructure preservation in these leaflets shows the presence of chloroplasts with thylakoid membranes, cell walls, mitochondria with associated endoplasmic reticulum, nuclei, and xylem tissue. Tissues show varying degrees of degradation; however, natural resin, which has perfused the cells, seems to maintain the structural integrity of the membranes and walls. We conclude that preservation of amber entombed organisms results from dehydration and slow fixative properties leaving the ultrastructure in excellent condition. These findings parallel reports on the exceptional preservation of amino acids and of DNA in amber-entombed organisms. 相似文献

Adhesive grass spikelet with mammalian hair in Dominican amber: First fossil evidence of epizoochory
Discovery of a female spikelet of the grass genusPharus (Gramineae: Bambusoideae: Phareae) in association with mammalian hair in Dominican Republic amber provides the first fossil evidence of epizoochory. Hooked macrohairs on the lemma of the spikelet show that morphological modifications in grasses for dispersal by attachment to the surface of animals were present in the Late Eocene. The fossil also represents 1) the second-oldest undoubted macrofossil record of the Gramineae, 2) the earliest record of a fossil grass that can be assigned to an extant genus, 3) the earliest undoubted record of a member of the bamboo subfamily and 4) the only known fossil ofPharus. 相似文献

A survey of the major fossiliferous amber deposits is provided, including ages and various categories of life forms reported from each. The frequence of occurrence of the major groups of plants and animals in these amber deposits is also given. Thus far, DNA from four insect and one plant species has been extracted from amber fossils. In the case of the stingless bee in Dominican amber, evidence of reproducibility is provided, since two independent laboratories isolated DNA from six or more different specimens of the same insect.Amber sources for DNA studies are listed together with their advantages and disadvantages. The important points are the availability of desired pieces, the proper identification of the fossil, verification of the amber deposit, the cost involved, and the feasibility of causing damage to the specimen. The availability of several types of amber (Mexican, Dominican, Baltic, Chinese, Canadian, Siberian and Lebanese) at four major sources (academic collections, commercial dealers, private collections and amber mines) is discussed. The scientific implications of obtaining DNA from amber inclusions are presented. 相似文献

Summary Sexual receptivity generally is reduced in moths after mating. We found that even in virginHeliothis zea females the titer of pheromone declines after the third night of adult life, although the number of eggs laid increases. Reduction in pheromone titer is not due to reduced amounts of pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide. We have discovered that a substance present in the bursa, ovaries and hemolymph of senescing virgins suppresses pheromone production. A similar factor was found in 2-day-old mated females indicating that both virgin and mated females use this factor to suppress pheromone production. 相似文献

DNA from 30-million-year-old amber preserved termites (Mastotermes electrodominicus) was PCR amplified with nuclear ribosomal RNA small subunit primers and cloned into the TA vector (INVITROGEN). We obtained several classes of recombinant clones as a result. AuthenticMastotermes electrodominicus clones were identified. The source of other classes of clones was identified as contaminants of the ancient DNA template. Several of the clones appeared to be chimeric in structure with half of the clone identical to the termite sequence and the other half identical to contaminant sequences. The phenomenon of PCR jumping was identified as a possible source for the chimeric clones. 相似文献

Experimental investigations on the feeding activity of the gastropodNassarius moestus in intertidal environments in the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) show them to be effective agents influencing processes of marine fish taphonomy. Time-lapse documentation reveals that potential whole-body preservation of fish carcasses is largely prevented through the rapid destruction of soft tissues, muscles, and ligaments, followed by disarticulation and subsequent disassociation of skeletal elements. Dissociated bones are subject to differential dispersal through hydrodynamic transport and physical wear through abrasion. Transformation of whole-body carcasses into thoroughly defleshed and disarticulated skeletons by large groups of scavenging snails was commonly observed to take place within one tidal cycle. The loss of information during taphonomic processes via destructive biological agents may ultimately bias the fossil record in a significant way and thus have implications for the paleoecological interpretation of fossil teleost assemblages. 相似文献

Misacylation of tRNA by a non-cognate amino acid is a natural phenomenon and occurs with a frequency of approximately 1 in
10,000 due to occasional mistakes in aminoacyl transfer RNA (tRNA) synthesis. In a number of prokaryotic organisms, misacylation
of selenocysteinyl tRNA, glutaminyl tRNA and aspartyl tRNAs has particular physiological meaning. Recently, misacylation has
emerged as a powerful tool for studying specific interactions between aa-tRNAs and associated protein factors. The present
review provides an overview of the application of misacylated tRNA in research.

Summary Reproduction inTjederina gracilis adults depends on short-day followed by long-day conditions. InNineta pallida, development of overwintering first-instar larvae is retarded by short days; later on, that of second-and third-instar by long days.Nineta flava andChrysopa perla prepupae automatically enter diapause, but inN. flava, photoperiod regulates diapause eermination, and long days may retard egg laying 相似文献

Summary Heterosexual chemoattraction studies on juvenile worms showed that 20- and 21-day-old worms do not attract each other, whereas 23- and 28-day-old worms are attracted to each other and pair with worms of the opposite sex. This onset of chemoattraction in vitro corresponds to the time when worms begin pairing in vivo. The ability of single worms to locate each other and mate is presumably mediated by chemoreceptors. 相似文献

Arthritic diseases cause enormous burdens in terms of pain, crippling, and disability. Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common
form of arthritis, is characterized by a slow progressive degeneration of articular cartilage. The exact etiology of OA is
not known, but the degradation of cartilage matrix components is generally agreed to be due to an increased synthesis and
activation of extracellular proteinases, mainly matrix metalloproteinases. Insufficient synthesis of new matrix macromolecules
is also thought to be involved, possibly as a consequence of deficient stimulation by growth factors. Although OA is defined
as a noninflammatory arthropathy, proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 have been implicated as important mediators
in the disease. In response to interleukin-1, chondrocytes upregulate the production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2, two factors that have been shown to induce a number of the cellular changes associated with OA. The generation of these
key signal molecules depends on inducible enzymes and can be suppressed by pharmacological inhibitors. 相似文献

Olfaction, the sense of smell, depends on large, divergent families of odorant receptors that detect odour stimuli in the
nose and transform them into patterns of neuronal activity that are recognised in the brain. The olfactory circuits in mammals
and insects display striking similarities in their sensory physiology and neuroanatomy, which has suggested that odours are
perceived by a conserved mechanism. Here I review recent revelations of significant structural and functional differences
between the Drosophila and mammalian odorant receptor proteins and discuss the implications for our understanding of the evolutionary
and molecular biology of the insect odorant receptors.

A number of enzymes use an amino acid free radical cofactor. Tyrosyl and tryptophanyl radicals react with nitric oxide (NO) with an almost diffusion-limited rate. The catalytically competent tyrosyl radical in ribonucleotide reductase (RR) and prostaglandin H synthase (PGHS) recombines with NO in a radical-radical reaction. The unstable adduct formed can dissociate to regenerate the tyrosyl radical. However, upon prolonged incubation with NO, the diiron center of mouse RR leaks out, while the adduct is sucessively oxidized into an iminoxyl radical and a nitrotyrosine in PGHS. These data provide a plausible mechanism for the physiological inactivation of RR observed in various models, and may help in understanding the inhibition of PGHS reported in some cases. Reversible combination with NO is an intrinsic property of tyrosyl radicals, which also occurs with YD • and YZ • in photosystem II, where NO has been useful in the analysis of the oxygen-evolving complex. 相似文献
