Effect of pretreatment with acetylsalicylate on surgical bleeding and peroperative mortality in rats undergoing kidney transplantation

Summary 42 rats were pretreated with L-ASA before kidney transplantation, 43 rats acted as controls. 9 rats with L-ASA. but no control rats, died with i.p. haemorrhage. However, in animals surviving the operation, the intraoperative blood loss did not differ significantly between the 2 groups.     

Effect of acetylsalicylate on surgical bleeding, postoperative mortality and allograft survival in rats undergoing heart transplantation.

18 rats were treated with L-ASA before heart transplantation and daily thereafter until death or rejection. 22 animals acted as controls. A significantly higher post-operative mortality rate, without any significant modification of the transplant survival time, was found in L-ASA-treated group.     

Effect of substrate pretreatment on renal organic ion transport in the adult rat.

The ability of renal cortical slices to accumulate PAH and NMN was not significantly affected by pretreatment of adult rats with large doses of PAH. Pretreatment of adult rats with THAM significantly increased PAH accumulation but had no effect on NMN. Inulin and PAH clearance and filtration fraction were significantly decreased by PAH pretreatment but unaffected by THAM pretreatment. The effects of pretreatment on transport are probably due to non-specific toxicity.     

Effect of pretreatment with prednisolone on the phagocytic activity of mouse peritoneal macrophages in vitro

Summary The phagocytic activity on in vitro cultured mouse peritoneal macrophages derived from animals treated with 6-alpha-methyl-prednisolone was examined. The statistical evaluation of results showed an increase of phagocytic activity of macrophages derived from treated animals in comparison with controls.

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass bei Nagern Röntgen-Ganztierbestrahlung mit 675 R während 4 Tagen vor Wundsetzung zu einer beträchtlichen Verzögerung der Wundkontraktion führt. Diese Verzögerung konnte durch eine Knochenmarktransplantation aufgehoben werden.     

Effect of propane sultone pretreatment on Friend virus leukemogenesis in mice

Propane sultone (PS) injected i.p. 24 or more hours before Friend leukemia virus increased the incidence of lymphoma in SJL/J mice and at a higher dose increased the incidence of erythroleukemia in B10SJF1 mice. PS at the same time also decreased hematopoietic stem cell clonogenicity.     

Freezing and transplantation of brain tissue in rats

Summary Neocortical tissue obtained from rat embryos was frozen and stored at –70°C for 6 h prior to transplantation into the cerebellum of neonatal rats. Growth, differentiation, and integration of this tissue within the host brain was comparable to that obtained from freshly dissected and transplanted tissue. It is suggested that freezing to low temperatures does not adversely effect the viability or transplantability of the neural tissue.Supported by N.I.H. research grants Nos NS-08817 and CA-14650.

Glomerular filtration rate and kidney blood flow in alloxan and streptozotocin diabetic rats.

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR), cardiac output, regional blood flow and kidney weight were measured in alloxan and streptozotocin diabetic rats at different times after the administration of diabetogen. A high GFR was found together with increased kidney weight and reduced blood flow.     

Lowering of liver acetaldehyde but not ethanol concentrations by pretreatment with taurine in ehtanol-loaded rats

Summary A rise in blood and liver acetaldehyde concentrations following ethanol loading (1.5 g/kg b.wt) was significantly reduced when rats were pretreated orally with taurine (0.5 g/kg), a potent in vitro activator of yeast aldehyde dehydrogenase. This taurine pretreatment produced a 4-fold increase in liver taurine content.     

Interaction of salicylate and noise results in mortality of rats

Summary Survival as a function of salicylate dose and the intensity of environmental noise was investigated in 150 adult female pigmented rats. Rats were assigned to groups (n=6/group) defined by combinations of salicylate levels from 0- (saline) to 300 mg/kg, injected subcutaneously, and noise levels from ambient noise to 98 dB SPL, presented daily for 10-h periods for up to 17 days. Mortality occurred in groups exposed to the higher combinations of salicylate and noise.

Effect of sex hormones on uric acid metabolism in rats.

The effects of sex hormones on purine metabolism were investigated in rats. No influence on purine synthesis was shown by the injection of estrogen and androgen. The plasma urate levels were significantly lowered from 2.43 +/- 1.04 mg/100 ml to 1.53 +/- 0.57 mg/100 ml by the injection of progesterone. Urinary excretion of uric acid plus allantoin was slightly reduced. These results suggested that progesterone may influence age and sex differences in human plasma urate levels.
