Summary Fine divided HF-etched quartz was dissolved in a 0.2M solution of pyrocatechol at pH 9.6. Between 17 and 40 °C the dissolution rate (v _s ) follows the equation: logv _s =0.0295 T-20.87 At 25 °Cv _s amounts to 0.8 · 10^–12 g cm^–2 sec^–1. With several phenols the dissolution rate of quartz decreases in the order: pyrocatechol > pyrogallol > 2, 3-dihydroxynaphthalene.

Summary It is shown that the peristaltic activity of the isolated mesenterial-lymph vessels of mammals (Cavia porcellus L.) is provoked by two different stimuli:1. by extension (internal pressure of the vessel: 2–25 cm H₂O); 2. by temperature (biokinetic Temperature-Space of 23°; between 22–45°C).Based on these experiments, the autochthonous automaticy of the lymph vessels has been proved.

Effects of photoperiod,temperature and testosterone-treatment on plasma T3 and T4 levels in the Djungarian hamster,Phodopus sungorus

Summary The effects of photoperiod, temperature and testosterone treatment on plasma T₃ and T₄ levels were investigated in the Djungarian hamster. Plasma T₃ level was affected by temperature (25°C<7°C) but not by photoperiod. Plasma T₄ level was affected by photoperiod (short day < long day) at 25°C. Administration of testosterone increased plasma T₄ level under short photoperiod at 25°C. Thus, higher plasma T₄ level under long photoperiod at 25°C might be induced by testosterone.     

Acute cold exposure increases the glucagon sensitivity of thermogenic metabolism in the rat

Summary Administration of glucagon to rats at 25°C had no effect upon their VO₂ while administration of noradrenaline or noradrenaline plus glucagon raised the VO₂-At 5°C, noradrenaline had no effect upon the cold-enhanced VO₂, while glucagon caused a rise of 13.7% implying increased glucagon sensitivity at 5°C. The glucagon-induced enhancement of VO₂ was abolished by concurrent administration of noradrenaline.     

The effects of temperature on ATPase activity and force generation in skinned muscle fibers from the Pacific blue marlin (Makaira nigricans)

Summary ATPase activity and force generation have been measured simultaneously in isolated, demembranated muscle fibers of the Pacific blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) between 0 and 30°C. Tension generation is relatively independent of temperature above 15°C and falls with a Q₁₀ of <1.5 on decreasing the temperature to 0°C. In contrast, the Q₁₀ for ATPase activity is 2.2 over the range 0–30°C. The results are interpreted in terms of the cross bridge theory of contraction.     

Effects of storage and processing on the nutritive value of certain Nigerian foods

Summary The effects of storage and processing on the nutritive value of two Nigerian foods-raw cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) flour and palm oil, have been investigated. Increased retention of both thiamine and riboflavin as a result of increased water activity (A_w) were recorded for cowpea flour stored for 6 months. A storage temperature of 5°C led to minimal losses of both vitamins in the stored flour. Differences in physico-chemical characteristics were observed between palm oil produced by the traditional method and that produced by a modern commercial method. Increasing A_w led to decreasing loss of unsaturation in the traditionally-produced palm oil during 4-week storage at ambient temperature (25°C).

Summary A fall in diurnal rearing temperature (from 33°C to 28°C) during the 2 last larval instars ofSchistocerca gregaria induces a lengthening of development and a slowing down of growth. At 28°C, circulating levels of juvenile hormones, particularly those of JH₃, diminish from the middle of the 4th instar but ecdysteroids and proteins accumulate in haemolymph.     

Polarographic determination of the reaction rate of the second step in an SN1 displacement

Zusammenfassung Die Zeitabhängigkeit des polarographischen Stromes, welche man bei der gemäss SN1 verlaufenden Hydrolyse vonp-Methoxy-2-phenylpropylchlorid beobachtet, ermöglicht die Bestimmung der Geschwindigkeitskonstantenk ₁ der Gesamtreaktion sowie auch der Geschwindigkeitskonstantenk ₂ des zweiten raschen Schrittes, welcher nach pseudo-erster Ordnung verläuft. Fürk ₂ ergibt sich in Aceton, das 5% Wasser enthält, bei 25°Ck ₂=2,0×10³ sec^–1.

Zusammenfassung Die Sauerstoffdissoziationskurve vomLatimeria-Blut zeigt eine grössere Affinität zu Sauerstoff bei 15°C (P₅₀=2–3 mm) als bei 28°C (P₅₀=18.0 mm). Diese Unterschiede und die geringe Sauerstoffkapazität sind für eine Diskussion über das Überleben des Fisches beim Aufsteigen aus grosser Tiefe an die Gewässeroberfläche massgebend.     

The CO2-binding capacity of rat brain tissuein vivo

Zusammenfassung 73 Ratten wurden hyperventiliert und mit Gasgemischen verschiedener CO₂-Gehalte (0–12%) während 30–180 min beatmet (arteriellerP _{CO 2} 12–107 Torr). Die Versuchstiere wurdenin situ eingefroren und der CO₂-Gehalt des Gehirngewebes mit eigener Methode bestimmt. Dissoziationskurve und Pufferkapazität des Gehirngewebes für CO₂ in vivo werden mitgeteilt.     

Synchronous growth ofPolytomella agilis

Zusammenfassung Das Wachstum des InfusorsPolytomella agilis kann durch wiederholte Temperaturrhythmen von 22 h bei 9°C und 2 h bei 25°C synchronisiert werden. Verdoppelung der Zellpopulation findet in der Wärmeperiode statt und der Atmungsrate in der Kälteperiode, auf welche die Biosynthese beschränkt bleibt.     

Thermische Denaturierung von Kaltblüter-Enzymproteinen

Summary The temperature, which leads to 50% reduction of catalytic activity by heat denaturation, has been determined for 8 different enzymes from cod muscle, as being in the range between 30 and 52°C. Therefore, there are no indications of a generally different heat resistance of enzymes from cold-blooded animals as compared with those from warm-blooded animals. The same conclusion is derived from calculations ofQ ₁₀-values, measured between +37 and – 37°C for cathepsin and glycylglycine dipeptidase.

Temperature dependence of neurotransmitter release in the antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki

Summary The quantal contents of endplate potentials from extraocular muscles of an antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki were measured over a range of temperatures. Quantal release was maximal at about 5°C but showed little dependence on temperature between –2°C and 10°C. Above 10°C quantal content declined until release ceased about 18°C. In view of the fact that the ambient temperature at which these fish live is constant at –1.9°C, the results suggest thatPagothenia borchgrevinki is only partially adapted to its environment despite 25 million years acclimatization.The authors wish to thank the staff of New Zealand's Scott Base, Antarctica, without whose cooperation the work would have been impossible. The determination of volatile aldehydes in gases and vapours

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine neue Methode vorgeschlagen, Acetaldehyd, Propionaldehyd und Butyraldehyd in Gegenwart von CH₄, C₂H₆, C₃H₈, C₂H₄, C₃H₆, C₂H₂, CO₂, CO, N₂, H₂ und O₂ quantitativ zu bestimmen. Die Methode besteht darin, das Gasgemenge mit Hilfe eines Orsatschen Apparates durch eine bei 20°C gesättigte, Chromtrioxyd und Schwefelsäure enthaltende Natriumsulfatlösung zu schicken, welche die oben genannten Aldehyde selektiv absorbiert.     

The induction of secondary seed dormancy by oxygen deficiency in a barnyard grassEchinochloa crus-galli

At 25°C, secondary dormancy was induced in seeds ofE. crus-galli exposed for 100 days to oxygen deficiency. By contrast, hypoxia did not induce dormancy at 15°C or prevent dormancy termination at 7°C. Secondary dormancy was terminated after 2 months stratification at 7°C. Oxygen deficiency may increase the proportion of dormant seeds in the soil, and affect the dynamics of the barnyard-grass soil seed bank.We thank Miss Jitka Králová for her excellent technical assistance.     

A contribution on the effect of noradrenaline on heat production in mice

Zusammenfassung Bei ausgewachsenen Mäusen wurde nach i.p. Noradrenalininjektion die Steigerung der O₂-Aufnahme über den Grundumsatz in der Thermoneutralzone verfolgt. Nach einer Dosis von 1,6 mg/kg wurde ein bedeutender Unterschied (p < 0,05) der O₂-Aufnahmesteigerung zwischen der Gruppe normaler (155%) und normaler, auf 17°C adaptierter Mäuse (165%) und der Gruppe haarloser Mäuse (195%) festgestellt.     

Measurement of tissuepCO2 in the brain

Zusammenfassung Der mittlerepCO₂ in der Gehirnrinde von Katzen wurde mittels einer neuen Elektrode kontinuierlich registriert. Es wird ein kurzer Bericht über die Messbedingungen, nebst Beispielen vonpCO₂-Veränderungen bei verschiedenen Funktionszuständen, gegeben.

Summary (1) Tissue slices of the liver and pieces of the skin of summer-frogs were incubated at 47.5°C for 30–150 min. Their respiration was measured during this incubation period and thereafter at a temperature of 37.5°C.(2) As a sign of an irreversible inactivation of the enzymes, the average respiration was inhibited. However, after certain periods of incubation at 47.5°C, over-shoot phenomena in the O₂-uptake at the temperature of 37.5°C were seen.     

The lectins fromAgaricus edulis. Isolation and characterization

Summary 2 lectins from the mushroomAgaricus edulis were isolated, after heating the crude extract at 75°C, by ion exchange chromatography and gel chromatography using QAE-Sephadex A-50 and Sephadex G₇₅. Some hemagglutinating and physicochemical properties of the agglutinins are reported.
