Effect of pancreatic polypeptide on DNA-synthesis in the pancreas

Summary Bovine pancreatic polypeptide increases DNA-synthesis in the rat pancreas; no effect is observed in stomach (oxyntic area), duodenum or liver. Dexamethasone-induced neutrophilia. Negative correlation with increased plasma adrenaline concentrations

Summary Maximal increments in adrenaline and dexamethasone (DXM) plasma concentrations were observed c15 (T₅₀ 40 min) and 30 (T₅₀ 210–240 min) minutes after an i.v. DXM dose (6 mg/m² BSA) in man. There appears, however, to be no direct interaction between these agents in the development of induced neutrophilia, which occurs c240 min postinjection.Acknowledgments. Influence of presensitization with allogeneic lymphoma cells on the growth and response to therapy of radiation-induced lymphomas in mice

Summary Congenic mice were sensitized with viableH-2-incompatible radiation-induced lymphomas (RIL), challenged with syngeneic RIL and treated with bis-chloroethyl-nitrosourea. Aflatoxin metabolism and absence of cytochrome P-450 in rat colon tissue during vitamin A malnutrition

Summary Homogenized mucosal linings prepared from vitamin A adequate and deficient male rats were used in metabolic studies of aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁). Cytochrome P-420 was identified in both groups which metabolized AFB₁ to 4 metabolic products in vitro. Thyroid activity in response to some gonadal steroids in methallibure-treatedHeteropneustes fossilis (Bloch)

Summary Methallibure treatment is as effective as hypophysectomy in reducing thyroid activity inH. fossilis. Sex steroids (TP and EB) administration restored thyroid activity in methallibure-treated females to normal level, but failed to elicit any response in males. The influence of somatostatin on drug-induced prolactin release in the monkey

Summary The infusion of linear somatostatin did not block prolactin release induced by either perphenazine, TRH or serotonin. 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaric acid and triton-induced hyperlipidemia in rats

Summary 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid (HMG) significantly decreased cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid levels in whole serum, serum -lipoproteins and liver of Triton-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Therapeutically 50 mg HMG/kg is equivalent to 200 mg nicotinic acid/kg in lowering all these lipid parameters. Establishment of normal diploid and malignant heteroploid cell lines from non-treated and benzo(a)pyrene treated hamster embryo cell cultures

Summary Two normal diploid control cell lines and a heteroploid malignant transformed cell line from B(a) P treated hamster embryo cell cultures were established. The 14-month-old B(a)P transformed cell line grew 8-times faster than the 20-month-old control cell line. The control cell line showed normal diploid chromosome complement in 93% cells and heteroploidy in 7% cells while B(a)P treated line showed 83% heteroploid cells and only 17% diploid cells. This is the first report on the establishment of diploid hamster cell cultures grown for extended period. Acknowledgments. 分析比格犬MC3R基因突变与体重性状的关系。抽取112只比格犬血液,记录体重数据,然后提取DNA;采用PCR-RFLP技术对MC3R基因G291A位点进行分析,并克隆测序。测序结果表明,291位点表现为G、A二个等位基因和GG、GA及AA三种基因型;统计分析结果显示AA型犬与GG型犬体重比较差异显著（P〈0．05）。犬MC3R基因突变可致体重增加,可作为犬体重标记的候选基因。     

Attempt to alter antigenic structure of normal tissues by treatment with dimethyl-triazeno-imidazole-carboxamide in vivo

Summary The antigenic structure of normal skin and spleen cells has been investigated following in vivo treatment with the compound DIC. In experiments involving skin grafting in the normal and sensitized host, cross sensitization with a DIC-antigenic lymphoma and³H-thymidine incorporation by lymphocytes cultured with DIC-treated spleen cells, new antigens on DIC-treated tissues were not demonstrated.Research supported in part by Contract No. 74.00237.04 from C.N.R., Rome.We wish to thank Mr.C. Volatility spillover from the US to international stock markets: A heterogeneous volatility spillover GARCH model

A recent study by Rapach, Strauss, and Zhou (Journal of Finance, 2013, 68(4), 1633–1662) shows that US stock returns can provide predictive content for international stock returns. We extend their work from a volatility perspective. We propose a model, namely a heterogeneous volatility spillover–generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model, to investigate volatility spillover. The model specification is parsimonious and can be used to analyze the time variation property of the spillover effect. Our in‐sample evidence shows the existence of strong volatility spillover from the US to five major stock markets and indicates that the spillover was stronger during business cycle recessions in the USA. Out‐of‐sample results show that accounting for spillover information from the USA can significantly improve the forecasting accuracy of international stock price volatility.     

Predominant expression of σ and ε globin genes in human leukemia K-562(S6) variant cell line

Summary In the human leukemia K-562(S6) cell line (a) the accumulation ofa-globin chains is low or absent, (b) -globin gene expression is correlated with expression of -chains and (c) the genes responsible for the terminal cell division are not operated within 8–12 cell cycles, while K-562 (S6) cells are fully induced to erythroid differentiation.This work was supported by grants from the Italian National Research Council (C.N.R.) Antitumoral effects of 9-cis retinoic acid in adrenocortical cancer

The currently available medical treatment options of adrenocortical cancer (ACC) are limited. In our previous meta-analysis of adrenocortical tumor genomics data, ACC was associated with reduced retinoic acid production and retinoid X receptor-mediated signaling. Our objective has been to study the potential antitumoral effects of 9-cis retinoic acid (9-cisRA) on the ACC cell line NCI-H295R and in a xenograft model. Cell proliferation, hormone secretion, and gene expression have been studied in the NCI-H295R cell line. A complex bioinformatics approach involving pathway and network analysis has been performed. Selected genes have been validated by real-time qRT-PCR. Athymic nude mice xenografted with NCI-H295R have been used in a pilot in vivo xenograft model. 9-cisRA significantly decreased cell viability and steroid hormone secretion in a concentration- and time-dependent manner in the NCI-H295R cell line. Four major molecular pathways have been identified by the analysis of gene expression data. Ten genes have been successfully validated involved in: (1) steroid hormone secretion (HSD3B1, HSD3B2), (2) retinoic acid signaling (ABCA1, ABCG1, HMGCR), (3) cell-cycle damage (GADD45A, CCNE2, UHRF1), and the (4) immune response (MAP2K6, IL1R2). 9-cisRA appears to directly regulate the cell cycle by network analysis. 9-cisRA also reduced tumor growth in the in vivo xenograft model. In conclusion, 9-cisRA might represent a promising new candidate in the treatment of hormone-secreting adrenal tumors and adrenocortical cancer.     

Desiccation in the black dragon,Hagenius brevistylus Selys

Summary Hagenius brevistylus lost mass by evaporation in a moderately desiccating environment at the rate of 20.4 mg h^–1, and died of desiccation in less than 1 day at a body mass of 79.8% of their normally hydrated mass. It was estimated thatHagenius minimally would have to consume the equivalent of 60% of its body mass each day to meet its daily water requirements. This amount of food is equivalent to that necessary to power flight of a dragonfly for 4.6h.This research was financed in part by a grant from the American Philosophical Society to C.R.T., and was conducted at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Douglas Lake (USA).     

Effects of brain monoamine depletion on thermoregulation,active avoidance,and food and water intake in rats

Summary Intraventricular administration of 6-OHDA or 5,6-DHT suppressed food intake, whereas their effect on active avoidance produced a suppression with the former and an enhancement with the latter. The increased water intake was specifically associated with 5,6-DHT treatment in rats.This work supported by grants from the National Science Council (Republic of China), J. Transport of the synthetic peptide DSIP through the blood-brain barrier in rabbit

Summary The synthetic delta sleep inducing peptide (DSIP) passes the blood-brain barrier, since i.v. injection in free moving rabbits (30 nmoles/kg) significantly increases the cortical delta activity and decreases the motor activity during 5 h.Acknowledgment. Release of labile cyclo-oxygenase products of arachidonic acid from kidney by endotoxin

Summary The possible release of prostaglandin (PG)-like substances was studied in isolated perfused kidneys from intact and from intrarenal endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide-LPS)-injected rabbits, using the venous outflow superflow superfuse assay organ technique. Injection of LPS into the renal artery of an LPS-pretreated kidney caused a release of thromboxane A₂ (TXA₂) and prostacyclin (PGI₂)-like materials into the venous effluent as verified by the responses of the specific assay organs. No detectable release of these substances was found in the venous outflow of LPS-injected intact kidney.
