Peripheral sympathetic innervation of the deep pineal gland of the golden hamster

Summary Both the superficial and deep pineal components of the intact hamster contain a rich network of green to yellow-green fluorescent nerve fibres. After either superior cervical ganglionectomy or after transection of the nervi conarii the majority of the fluorescing fibres disappeared from both the superficial and deep pineal mases. Although the deep pineal remained intact after surgical removal of the superficial pineal, it was devoid of any green or yellowgreen fluorescent fibres.Supported by NSF Grant No. BMS74-06275A01     

Occurrence of hibernation in the golden hamster,Mesocricetus auratus waterhouse

Résumé Une hypothèse est présentée pour expliquer la variabilité en durée de la période préléthargique au cours de l'année. La période préléthargique pouvait être approximée à trois mois. Dès novembre, le Hamster développe une prédisposition, résultant dans un raccourcissement de la période préléthargique. En février, la prédisposition pour le sommeil hivernal est au maximum, mais ensuite elle est perdue.     

Effect of orally administered melatonin on reproductive function of the golden hamster

Scanning electron microscopy of golden hamster spermatozoa before and during fertilization

Résumé L'observation directe de la surface du sperme et de l'uf au microscope électronique «scanning» a montré une série de changements dans le spermatozoïde du Hamster doré avant la fertilisation ainsi que la relation topographique entre le spermatosoïde et l'uf au moment de la fertilisation. Il semble que les microvilli de l'uf participent activement à l'incorporation de la tête du sperme dans le cytoplasme de l'uf.     

Concentration and nature of iodide secreted by the perfused salivary glands of the golden hamster

Résumé L'analyse de la salive extraité par ponction de la glande sous-maxillaire duCricetus auratus montre que cette glande concentre l'iodide inorganique et que la salive qu'elle sécrète, contient un facteur capable de «lier» cette substance. Ce facteur manque par contre à la glande sublinguale et l'iodide n'y est pas concentré.Il est donc suggéré que le facteur contenu dans la salive de la glande sous-maxillaire et qui est responsable de l'iodide «lié», joue un rôle dans le mécanisme de concentration de l'iodide par les glandes.

Morphology of the intercapsular segment of the oviduct in the golden hamster with special reference to ovumtransit from ruptured follicles to the ampulla

Summary The intercapsular segment of the oviduct in the golden hamster is not a simple duct which has constant outer and inner diameters. After penetrating the bursa ovarica the ICS has a circular constriction and the corresponding oviductal lumen is narrowed.     

Tyrosine hydroxylase activity in a transplantable islet cell tumour of golden hamster

Zusammenfassung In einem transplantierbaren Insel-zelltumor des Goldhamsters ist eine Tyrosinhydroxylase-Aktivität gefunden. Die hohe Aktivität der Enzyme zusammen mit einer starken Konzentration von Tyrosin deutet auf eine schnelle Synthese von Dopa in den Tumorzellen. Die Anwesenheit der Dopametaboliten DOPAC und HVA im Tumor wurde gezeigt.

Dopa-decarboxylase and monoamine oxidase activities in a transplantable islet cell tumour of the golden hamster

Zusammenfassung In einem transplantierbaren Inselzelltumor des Goldhamsters, der neben 5-Hydroxytryptamin, Dopa und Dopamin eine bisher unidentifizierte, vermutlich monoaminähnliche Substanz enthält, wurde eine hohe Dopadecarboxylase- und Monoaminooxydaseaktivität gefunden. Nach Dopa-decarboxylasehemmung wurde eine starke Anhäufung von Dopa im Tumorgewebe beobachtet; dieser Befund weist auf eine schnelle Monoaminsynthese und einen schnellen Monoaminumsatz im Tumorgewebe hin.

Aneuploidy as a consequence of senescence and ovariectomy in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus)

The hypothesis of the preferred X-chromosome loss in elder human females was reevaluated in the golden hamster: early castration of females proved that the increase of aneuploid cells is correlated with the loss of the ovaries. But here, and in old females, aneuploidy consisted of random loss of excess of chromosomes, in no case an X-chromosome.

Immunohistochemical localization fo galactocerebroside in kidney,liver, and lung of golden hamster

Summary Localization of galactocerebroside in kidney, liver, and lung of hamster was studied by the immunoperoxidase method using an affinity-purified specific antibody. Epithelial cells of the following anatomical sites were labelled with the antibody: distal tubuli, ascending limbs of Henle's loops, and collecting tubuli in kidney; periportal bile ducts and hepatic parenchyma in liver; bronchioli and alveoli in lung.
