Summary Antibodies against hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) ofCarcinus were raised in rabbits by injection of extract from sinus glands which contain high concentrations of CHH. The antiserum neutralizes the biological activity of CHH and binds125J-CHH. A RIA for CHH was established and was used to measure the hormone content of sinus glands.Dedicated to Prof. M. Zusammenfassung Es ist anzunehmen, dass die präsynaptische Hemmung der Crustaceen-Muskeln durch Reaktion eines hemmenden Überträgerstoffs mit Rezeptoren der Endigungen der motorischen Nervenfasern zustande kommt. Synaptische Kontakte des hemmenden Axons mit den Endigungen der motorischen Nervenfasern sind mit dem Elektronenmikroskop beobachtet worden. Wahrscheinlich vermitteln diese Strukturen den präsynaptischen Effekt.  相似文献

Summary Autoradiographic, stereological and histological studies have been carried out to determine the origin of muscle fibre splitting which supposedly occurs during muscle hypertrophy. The results obtained clearly indicate that the supposedly split fibres are a transient response probably derived from satellite cells and are not derived from pre-existing fibres by true splitting. Similarly, increases in muscle fibre size are not achieved by recruitment of satellite structures as indicated by lack of myonuclear recruitment.Acknowledgment. Summary 4-Cyclopentene-1,3-dione induces electrical activity in inexcitable crustacean muscle. This effect is blocked by previous treatment with p-chloromercuribenzoic acid. These results suggest that crustacean muscle becomes excitable when certain-CH2-SH side chains are converted to thioethers having carbonyl groups.Acknowledgments. Studies of the last two decades have demonstrated that sphingolipids are important signalling molecules exerting key roles in the control of fundamental biological processes including proliferation, differentiation, motility and survival. Here we review the role of bioactive sphingolipids such as ceramide, sphingosine, sphingosine 1-phosphate, ganglioside GM3, in the regulation of skeletal muscle biology. The emerging picture is in favour of a complex role of these molecules, which appear implicated in the activation of muscle resident stem cells, their proliferation and differentiation, finalized at skeletal muscle regeneration. Moreover, they are involved in the regulation of contractile properties, tissue responsiveness to insulin and muscle fiber trophism. Hopefully, this article will provide a framework for future investigation into the field, aimed at establishing whether altered sphingolipid metabolism is implicated in the onset of skeletal muscle diseases and identifying new pharmacological targets for the therapy of multiple illnesses, including muscular dystrophies and diabetes. The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a metabolite sensing serine/threonine kinase that has been termed the master regulator of cellular energy metabolism due to its numerous roles in the regulation of glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism. In this review, we first summarize the current literature on a number of important aspects of AMPK in skeletal muscle. These include the following: (1) the structural components of the three AMPK subunits (i.e. AMPKα, β, and γ), and their differential localization in response to stimulation in muscle; (2) the biochemical regulation of AMPK by AMP, protein phosphatases, and its three known upstream kinases, LKB1, Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase (CaMKK), and transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1); (3) the pharmacological agents that are currently available for the activation and inhibition of AMPK; (4) the physiological stimuli that activate AMPK in muscle; and (5) the metabolic processes that AMPK regulates in skeletal muscle. Summary Isolated rat skeletal muscle mitochondria took up about 40-ng-atoms O per min per mg protein, with glutamine as the only respiratory substrate. The mitochondria incubated in the presence of glutamine and KCN formed both ammonia and glutamate in equivalent amounts. The experiments reported here provide suggestive evidence that rat skeletal muscle mitochondria contain glutaminase (L-glutamine amidohydrolase EC 3.5.1.2.) activity.This work was supported by the Polish Academy of Sciences within the project II. 1, 2, 6.  相似文献
