Enhanced production of aggregation pheromones in four stored-product coleopterans feeding on methoprene-treated oats

Summary Production of aggregation pheromones by maleOryzaephilus surinamensis, O. mercator, Cryptolestes ferrugineus, andTribolium castaneum was enhanced by feeding on methoprene-treated oats, implicating juvenile hormone in control of pheromone production. Methoprene application to control insects in stored food products may cause enhanced pheromone production by these insects, thus drawing additional beetles into the treated product.Acknowledgments. Albumin synthesis in regenerating rat liver cells

Riassunto Gli autori hanno studiatoin vitro il problema della sintesi dell'albumina in sezioni di fegato normale e rigenerante di ratto. La quantità di albumina prodotta durante l'incubazione non presenta notevoli variazioni nelle due situazioni studiate. Al contrario l'incorporazione di glicina marcata nella albumina del fegato rigenerante risulta nettamente aumentata rispetto a quella del fegato normale. Tale comportamento viene interpretato come espressione di un ricambio albuminico più elevato nel fegato rigenerante che nel normale.

A new neurosecretory system in fish,located in the gill region

Summary A peculiar neurosecretory system is reported in 6 teleost species;Clarias batrachus, Heteropneustes fossilis, Mystus seenghala, Ompak pabda, Glassogobius giuris andNotopterus notopterus. It is located in the gill region close to the pseudobranch or to the carotid labyrinth. The neurosecretory cells have been identified using stains specific for neurosecretion. The results are discussed in the light of the association of the neurosecretory system with the pseudobranch or the carotid labyrinth, and the airbreathing habit of these fishes.We are grateful to Prof. U.S. Srivastava for providing laboratory facilities and for encouragement. Anticomplementary fraction from the poisonous secretion of the paratoid gland of the toad (Bufo marinus paracnemis Lutz)

Summary Fractionation of the poisonous secretion of the toadBufo marinus paracnemis Lutz, by dialysis and chromatography on QAE-Sephadex, led to the isolation of a fraction which was adsorbed to the ion exchanger. This fraction, when incubated with human serum, yielded an anticomplementary effect that was evaluated by measuring the kinetics of lytic activity on sensitized sheep red cells (classical pathway) and unsensitized rabbit cells (alternative pathway).We are very much indebted to Dr Lewis J. Natural hybridization inDrosophila

Summary Although at least 159 cases of interspecific hybridization between closely related species ofDrosophila have been obtained under laboratory conditions, only 7 cases of natural interspecific hybridization have been recorded. The antennae and mating behaviour ofDrosophila females

Summary The females ofDrosophila bipectinata andD. malerkotliana are able to discriminate between their own and alien males in the absence of antennae. Observations on the toxicity and metabolic relationships of polygodial,the chemical defense of the nudibranchDendrodoris limbata

Summary Polygodial (1), the defense metabolite stored in the skin of the nudibranchDendrodoris limbata, is toxic for the mollusc itself when injected into the hepatopancreas. Biosynthetic experiments using labeled mevalonic acid were devised to investigate a possible metabolic relationship between1 and the mixture of sesquiterpenoidic esters2, stored in the hepatopancreas. Evidence for the metabolism of phospholipids and triacylglycerols in humanAscaris lumbricoides

Summary HumanAscaris lumbricoides has the necessary mechanism for the biosynthesis and degradation of phospholipids and triacylglycerols, as in most other species. Piperazine decreases the level of triacylglycerols of this parasite by stimulating the activity of lipase and partially inhibiting the activity of phosphatidate phosphatase.Acknowledgments. Anti-bovineβ-lactoglobulin antibodies react with a human lactoferrin fragment and bovineβ-lactoglobulin present in human milk

Human milk samples react against anti-bovine-lactoglobulin rabbit antibodies, as measured by a competitive radioimmunoassay. Immunoreactivity was positive even in milk from mothers consuming a diet free of cow's milk. An increase with a diet rich in cow's milk proteins was detected by immunoelectrophoresis. The human milk fraction cross-reacting with anti-bovine-lactoglobulin antibodies corresponds to the 20 kDa fragment from the N-terminal end of human lactoferrin. Three regions of this fragment exhibit sequence homology with a sequence contained in cow's-lactoglobulin (between residues 124 and 141).     

Abnormal development of phialides in a strain ofAspergillus niger

Summary AnAspergillus niger mutant strain (hpp) produces an average of 4.1% of conidiophores with phialide proliferations. Increased frequency of proliferations could be induced on all studied strains by growth on potato dextrose agar. The characteristic is recessive and seems to be due to a pleiotropic effect of the mutation for olive conidia color.Acknowledgments. Einfluß von Penicillin auf die Wurzelkultur(Zea mays) Nachweis von β-Indolylessigsäure (Heteroauxin) im Handelspenicillin

Summary (1) Pure Penicillin Sodium G (150 U/cm³) gives no inhibition in the growth-rate ofmays-roots in sterile organe culture.(2) Commercial penicillin (Penicillin Sodium Squibb, 5 U/cm³) inhibits the growth-rate ofmays-roots in a fairly high degree, due to its content of indole acetic acid. We have been able to separate the substance from the yellow dyes of commercial penicillin by chromatographic adsorption and to identify it colorimetrically as indole acetic acid.     

Cornea regeneration in the Pacific giant octopus,Octopus dofleini,and the common octopus,O. vulgaris

Summary Cornea regeneration in a Pacific giant octopus,Octopus dofleini, occurred within 10 days after the injury was observed. Surgical removal of the cornea in 2 common octopi,O. vulgaris experimentally duplicated this cornea regeneration within a 10-day period. It is, therefore, concluded that besides sucking discs, arms, and nerve fibres, octopi can also regenerated corneal tissue.The authors would like to thank U. E. Friese, B. Borowski, P. Burn, J.W. Electrical response of bat retina to spectral stimulation: comparison of four microchiropteran species

Summary Electrical responses of the retinas of 4 species of microchiropteran bats stimulated by spectrally restricted light flashes were found to diverge systematically from the rhodopsin absorption spectrum. The divergence was progressively greater across the 4 species. The results appeared explainable by assuming a second photoreceptor class and photopigment which was present in progressively greater numbers in the retinas ofEptesicus fuscus, Desmodus rotundus, Artibeus jamaicensis andCarollia perspicillata.This work was made possible by equipment provided by grant No. EY 01228 from the U.S.P.H.S., Bob Hope Fight for Sight award No. G 522 and a grant from Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. A high number of chromosomes in the hillstream cyprinid,Tor putitora (Pisces)

Summary The karyotype of a cyprinid fish occurring in India,Tor putitora is described. The diploid complement comprises 100 chromosomes. The modal number in this family being 2n=50,T. putitora appears to be another case of tetraploidy.The author is highly indebted to Prof. G.K. Manna, and Prof. A.K. Aminotransferase study ofNeurospora crassa ser-3 versus wild type ST4A

Summary TheNeurospora crassa serine auxotrophser-3 and the wild type ST4A were compared with respect to their phosphoserine and serine aminotransferase activities. Effect of NPV of the armywormMythimna (Pseudaletia) separata on the silkwormBombyx mori

Summary Nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) material of the armywormMythimna (Pseudaletia) separata was administered in the form of PIBs and free virus rods to the larvae of silkwormBombyx mori. Routes used for administration were topical, intrahaemocoelic and oral. The larvae were treated with following concentrations: 10×10⁵ PIBs/L, 10×10⁶ PIBs/L, 10×10⁷ PIBs/L, 10×10⁸ PIBs/L. In all the 3 experiments, the larvae showed neither any signs and symptoms, nor mortality due to polyhedrosis. Thus it appears that the NPV ofM. (P.) separata is safe for the silkwormB. mori.Acknowledgments. Endotoxin-induced acceleration of ovum transport in rabbits

Summary Salmonella enteritidis-Boivin endotoxin (1–20 g/kg) induced accelerated oviductal ovum transport in rabbits in a dose-related manner. Indomethacin prevented this effect.
