Summary Dormice kept under food restriction for several months continued to exhibit body weight cycles with characteristic periods of about 2 months, despite an impaired ability to attain the high body weight levels observed in ad libitum conditions. These results imply that the cycle is controlled by a mechanism whose properties are more consistent with an endogenous oscillator than with a sequence of stages, in which the relevant stages are defined by upper and lower body weight limits.I thank N. Ornithine carbamoyltransferase (OCT) and arginase, but not arginine synthetase (AS), were detected in the body wall and gut tissues of the leech. The activities of these enzymes were not altered by starvation. The high activity of arginase in body wall is probably due to the association of the latter with botryoidal tissue. Hirudineans, which evolved from oligochaete ancestors, appear to have lost the citrulline-arginine segment of the urea cycle due to their ammonotelic mode of nitrogen excretion.S. N. and B. Summary In rats undernutrition from birth to 14 days of age resulted in retardation of growth and diminution of antral gastrin concentration. When the 14-day-old undernourished rats were nutritionally rehabilitated, they grew at a faster rate, and at 27 days of age their body weight and the weight of various tissues of the gastrointestinal tract including the antrum reached the levels of the well-nourished littermate controls. In spite of this, antral gastrin concentration was found to be about one-half of that of the well-nourished littermates.Acknowledgments. I am indebted to Professor J. F. Summary Mice were allowed to mate, gestate, deliver and rear their offspring for 3 successive generations while being continuously exposed to 60 Hz electric fields. Mice exposed to vertical electric fields exhibited decreased body weights at 35 days postpartum and increased mortality, rates for 3 successive generations. Mice exposed to horizontal electric fields exhibited decreased body weights for 2 successive generations.Supported by grants from National Institute of Health, and the Veterans Administration. Summary Several physiological parameters were measured in hairless mice maintained on a diet supplemented with antioxidants. Comparisons to animals on control diet revealed higher water-soluble antioxidant content of skin and increased liver weight. Summary L-lysine administration to male weanling rats at a dose of 110.4 mg (25% LD50) per 100 g body weight per day for 15 days reduced the liver total ascorbic acid level. The biosynthesis as well as the degradation of L-ascorbic acid was diminished under these conditions. The fall in liver total ascorbic acid level after L-lysine administration was ascribed to its reduced synthesis.Acknowledgment. Summary During periods of torporSminthopsis crassicaudata, a dasyurid marsupial, regulated its body temperature above about 16.3°C in summer and 13.0°C in winter. Animals with lower body temperatures were unable to arouse. Liver, heart and brain mitohondrial succinate:cytochrome c reductase showed a thermal transition at 16°C in summer and at 12.5°C in winter. Thus the lowest regulated body temperature was just above the temperature where changes were detected in mitochondrial respiration.Acknowledgments. Summary Systemic action of nicotinamide significantly alters the activities of hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes. Male rats injected with nicotinamide have reduced levels of cytochrome P450, demethylases and aniline hydroxylase. The changes appear to be sex-dependent since in the case of female rats activities of p-nitroanisole-o-demethylase and aniline hydroxylase are enhanced whereas cytochrome P450 content remains unaltered.Authors gratefully acknowledge the encouragement given by Professor A.S. Summary Total castration increases the weight, delays oviposition and reduces the functioning of the genital organs but partial gonadectomy has no effect. 分析比格犬MC3R基因突变与体重性状的关系。抽取112只比格犬血液,记录体重数据,然后提取DNA;采用PCR-RFLP技术对MC3R基因G291A位点进行分析,并克隆测序。测序结果表明,291位点表现为G、A二个等位基因和GG、GA及AA三种基因型;统计分析结果显示AA型犬与GG型犬体重比较差异显著(P〈0.05)。犬MC3R基因突变可致体重增加,可作为犬体重标记的候选基因。  相似文献

Summary Using green geckos (Phelsuma) the molecular weights and isoelectric points of S-carboxymethylated keratin monomers from fresh and preserved reptile epidermis were investigated. Isoelectric focussing reveals that several of the circa 35 components differ between genera, species and races and that the relative similarity of the SCMK pattern is directly related to evolutionary similarity and is of considerable taxonomic value.We would like to thank the SRC (grant A/8799.9 to R.S. Summary Recent evidence has revived the idea that translocation of macromolecules between nucleus and cytoplasm may be regulated via expansion and contraction of the entire diameter of the nuclear pore complex. Summary Thirteen cows maintained on natural bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) were analyzed cytogenetically. The frequency of structural chromosome aberrations detected in peripheral blood cells was significantly higher when compared to that detected in animals raised on pasture containing no bracken fern. Rana esculenta (L.), kept under natural conditions, show almost constant body weights in the annual cycle. Fat body weight, however, has a distinct maximum in October decreasing continuously to a May minimum which is also evident in the fat body index. The triglyceride and protein contents show the same course. Suprisingly high amounts of glycogen are found, which reach a maximum in August.  相似文献

Summary Wood frogs survive extracellular freezing at moderate subzero temperatures (–4°C) for at least 11 days. Freezing survival is aided by the accumulation of high concentrations of glucose as a cryoprotectant in blood and tissues. Glucose production was accompanied by a rapid decline in liver, but not muscle, glycogen levels suggesting that liver is the organ controlling cryoprotectant synthesis.Acknowledgments.
