An empirical relationship between the prey density and predatory efficiency ofGambusia affinis

Summary Larval density of Culex fatigans essentially influences the predatory rate of the mosquito-fish Gambusia affinis. The feeding rate of the fish gradually increases up to a maximum value at intermediate prey densities beyond which there is an asymptotic saturation in the feeding rate. The relationship is represented by an empirical equation which helps in the prediction of the ideal stocking rate of the fish in natural systems.     

Effect of water temperature on the motility ofPelagia noctiluca (Forksal)

Summary Laboratory tests have been performed, on the behavior of the jellyfishPelagia noctiluca as a function of the water temperature. It has been found that the usual contractions of the umbrella are almost completely missing at 6°C; they begin to appear at about 7–8°C and they reach frequencies of about 10 and 40 per min at 11 and 15°C respectively. An ambient temperature of about 11°C appears to be a threshold value below which this kind of medusa ceases to move actively and sinks, while at higher temperatures it gradually begins to shift, showing a positive thermotropism in the presence of temperature gradients greater than about 0.01 °C/cm.This work was supported by grant No. 80.00748.88 from the National Research Coucil of Italy (CNR).     

Effect of body temperature on intracellular pH

Zusammenfassung Zwischen dem extrazellulären pH und dem pH des gesamten Intrazellulärraumes besteht eine annähernd lineare Beziehung. Senkung der Körpertemperatur führt zu einer Erhöhung des pH _i , hat aber keinen Einfluss auf den Regressionskoeffizienten und damit auf die intrazelluläre Pufferkapazität.     

Effect of temperature on the activity of AMP-deaminase from rat heart

Summary In the presence of 1 mM ATP, the plots of Michaelis dependence of the reaction catalysed by AMP-deaminase from rat heart were hyperbolic at all temperatures between 10 and 40°C. Calculation of the energy of activation for ATP-activated enzyme and of the enzyme-substrate complex formation is presented.

Résumé Nous avons étudié l'influence de différentes températures sur la translation de l'ADN d'origine bactérienne chez les plantules de tomate. La température n'a aucune influence en elle-même. Néanmoins des variations de température diminuent la dépolymérisation de l'ADN étranger migré dans la plante.

Effect of nodal water potential on the germination of sugarcane buds

Zusammenfassung Das Keimen der Zuckerrohr-Achselknospen wurde als vom Knotenwasserpotential beeinflussbar beobachtet. Die Sprossentwicklung erfolgte noch bei so geringem Wasserpotential wie 1063,6 Joule/kg und selbst bei Fehlen jeglicher Wasseraufnahme. Ausgeschnittene Knospen mit einem Wasserpotential von 1063,5 bis 1823,4 Joule/kg konnten nur im Wasser gehalten austreiben, während ein Wasserpotential von 2026,0 Joule/kg tödlich war.

Zusammenfassung Verabreichung von Selen verändert das Stoffwechselgleichgewicht bei 21-Tage alten Ratten, bei denen der Wasserverbrauch proportional zur Nahrungsaufnahme erfolgt, ebenso besonders die freiwillige Futter- und Wasseraufnahme. Diese Befunde sind bei der Untersuchung der Wirkung von Selen auf die Zahnkaries im Rattenversuch zu berücksichtigen.

Effect of temperature and concentration on the anomalous potassium uptake of thermophilic plants

Zusammenfassung Nachweis, dass in der thermophilen Gurke (Cucumis sativus) ein mehrphasiges K⁺-Aufnahme-system existiert, welches sich von jenem kälteunempfindlicher Pflanzen unterscheidet. Untersucht wurden abgetrennte Gurkenwurzeln im Temperaturbereich von 0 und 21 °C.     

Individual specific trails in the antLeptothorax affinis (Formicidae: Myrmicinae)

Summary Leptothorax affinis lays chemical trails during nest emigration. Workers which carried colony members during nest movement refused trails of nest mates and searched for their own trails. The origin of the individual specific trail substance could not be localized.
