Changes in rat ventricular myosin in old age

Myosin was isolated from rat ventricular myocardium, and its properties were compared in adult and very old animals. Ca2+ -ATPase activity of ventricular myosin was found to be lower in very old animals as compared with adult ones; K+ -ATPase activity, however, does not change with the aging process. Neither were there any differences between the two age groups in the pattern of ventricular light chains of myosin.     

Sensitivity of human lymphocytes to bleomycin increases with age

Summary The sensitivity of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to bleomycin and mitomycin-C was assessed by measuring the inhibition of phytohemagglutinin stimulated proliferation. The sensitivity to bleomycin, and not to mitomycin-C, increased with the age.We thank Miss L. Bailey for excellent technical assistance and the Bristol-Myers Company for supply of bleomycin. Changes in pulse wave velocity with age in man: a longitudinal series over 20 years

Measurements of pulse wave velocity (PWV) carried out systematically in the same 60 healthy individuals over 20 years confirmed that average PWV progressively increases with age, and more rapidly after age 45. The PWV increase mainly results from the decreased extensibility of the thoracic aorta in the aortic-popliteat arterial system. This longitudinal study showed that PWVs of most individuals do not closely follow the average cross-sectional trend, but vary considerably in type. Therefore, PWV by itself is hardly a close correlate of an individual's physiological age or life expectancy. Individuals with a constantly high PWV or a late abrupt increase are exceptional; a possible relation to an increased mean arterial pressure and decreased arterial extensibility as in hypertonia is mentioned.

Zusammenfassung Erstmaliger morphometrischer Nachweis bei 2 Gruppen reifer, altersunterschiedlicher Ratten, dass die Zahl der Synapsen im Hippocampus mit dem Alter zunimmt, wobei die effektive Steigerungsrate auch mit Umwelteinflüssen zusammenhängen könnte.

Changes of the prostaglandin F23 metabolism in early human placenta

Summary The quantitative metabolism of PgF₂₄ was studied in different ages of early human placentae in vitro. An anatomical study of the microcirculation in the rabbit femur

Summary A technique is described which will allow a study of the microcirculation to a long bone such as the femur. It involves use of a silicone rubber compound (Microfil) in combination with the Spalteholz clearing technique. Preliminary results in the normal rabbit skeleton suggest that this technique can be used to study the changes in vascularity which occur under various pathological conditions.
