Chromosome studies of oriental anophelines. I. The salivary gland chromosomes ofAnopheles barbirostris

Zusammenfassung Es werden verschiedene tropische Anophelesarten, besonders die orientalische, cytogenetisch untersucht. Es wird eine Standard-Chromosomenkarte vonAnopheles barbirostris van der Wulp (Typ der Barbirostris-Gruppe einer orientalischen Region und zur Serie Myzorhynchus, der Untergattung Anopheles gehörend) als erste der Serie orientalischer Anophelesarten vorgeschlagen.     

Autoradiographic studies on RNA synthesis and transport in the salivary gland of Lygaeus sp. (Hemiptera-Lygaeidae)

Autoradiographic studies using 3H-uridine in the salivary gland of adult Lygaeus sp. were carried out. The gland cell nuclei, particularly the multiple nucleoli, are the sites of incorporation of the label exhibiting RNA synthesis. The labelled molecules (RNA) are transported to the cell cytoplasm and then into the gland lumen in which no turnover of the radioactivity is observed.

Riassunto Dai dati riferiti si mettono in evidenza due punti: il primo dimostra nel tumore in esame l'assenza di particelle virali e di effetto citopatico specifico per il virus polioma. Inoltre non si mettono in evidenza anticorpi fissanti il complemento o emoagglutinoinbenti per il virus polioma negli animali portatori di tumori. II secondo punto dimostra che durante il suo sviluppo il tumore della ghiandola salivare é incapace di indurre una risposta immunologica apprezzabile.

Secretory potentials evoked by nerve stimulation have been recorded from both types of cell (peripheral and central) present in the acini of cockroach salivary glands.

Zusammenfassung An ultradünnen Schnittpr?paraten von Speicheldrüsenchromosomen (Drosophila melanogaster) und an entsprechenden Quetschpr?paraten (Drosophila virilis) wurde elektronenmikroskopisch festgestellt: Die Chromomeren und Chromonemata bestehen aus Filamenten mit Schraubenwindungen vom ?paran?mischen? Typus. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass die Windungen der beiden Filamente in der entgegengesetzten Richtung ranken.

Differential developmental pattern of acid and alkaline phytase and phosphatase activities in rat intestine.

Rat intestine was found to show a distinct acid phytase activity (pH optimum 4.7) in addition to that of an alkaline phytase (pH optimum 8.0). The phytase and phosphatase activities were found to differ in their developmental pattern and responded differentially to some inhibitors. Thus the two activities seem to be due to two independent enzymes and are not the activity of a nonspecific phosphatase as has been suspected formerly.     

Intranucleolar DNA in the salivary gland cells of the melonfly,Dacus cucurbitae

Zusammenfassung Es wurde DNA nachgewiesen, das nicht in direkter Verbindung steht mit der chromosomalen DNA. Histologische Untersuchungen wurden an der Speicheldrüse einer Fliege (Dacus cucurbitae) durchgeführt. Die intranukleäre DNA findet sich in Form von Granula verschiedener Grösse, teilweise auch in Form von Bändern oder Zapfen. Die Kern-DNA scheint an Zellproteine gebunden. Wird H³-Cytidin einverleibt, ergibt sich, dass der Kern früher als die Chromosomen intranukleäre DNA in ribosomale RNA synthetisieren kann.     

A novel effect of cobalt treatment on calcium-dependent responses of the cockroach salivary gland

Summary After incubation in calcium-free solutions containing cobalt, the readmission of calcium caused prolonged but reversible hyperpolarization of acinar cells of cockroach salivary glands and prolonged fluid secretion. It is suggested that cobalt treatment increases the permeability of the acinar cell membrane to calcium.Acknowledgments. We are indebted to the Medical Research Council for support.     

Identification of lymphocyte subpopulations by simultaneous E-rosette formation and unspecific acid esterase staining.

E-rosettes of human peripheral blood lymphocytes were stained by an unspecific acid esterase stain; 74.5% of the rosette forming cells were esterase positive, while only 30% of the non-rosette forming cells showed a reaction product.     

The effect of DDT on DNA replication in the larval salivary gland cells ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary The inhibitory effect of DDT on the initial stage of the DNA replication process in polytene chromosomes of larval salivary gland cells ofDrosophila melanogaster was investigated and possible mechanisms for the inhibition are discussed.
